Wood River is a city in Madison County, Illinois. The population was 10,464 as of the 2020 census.

East Alton is a village in Madison County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,786 at the 2020 census, down from 6,301 in 2010.

Wood River Township is located in Madison County, Illinois, in the United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 31,537 and it contained 14,226 housing units.

Roxana High School is a secondary school in Roxana, Illinois, United States. The school's mascot is the shell, named for the former Shell Oil (now ConocoPhillips) refinery also located in the town. The school district encompasses all of Roxana, South Roxana, and parts of Wood River, Edwardsville and Rosewood Heights.

Rosewood Heights is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Madison County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,971 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Metro East region of the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area.

Wood River (historically, Rivière du Bois) is a 2.4-mile-long (3.9 km) tributary of the Mississippi River, which it joins near East Alton, and Wood River, Illinois, to the northeast of St. Louis, Missouri. The Wood River is formed by the confluence of its West and East forks. These come together near where they drop down from the Mississippi bluffs. The natural channel of the Wood River used to follow the Mississippi through the bottoms before joining it. This has been cut off by an artificial channel that runs through flood control structures directly to the Mississippi. In 1803, the Wood River (then known in French as '), gave its name to Camp Wood, where the Lewis and Clark expedition assembled. The West Fork of the Wood River is 16.4 miles (26.4 km) long, and the East Fork is 21.9 miles (35.2 km) long. Honeycut Branch is a major tributary of the West Fork, and Girder Branch is a major tributary of the East Fork. The mouth of the Wood River was a highly industrialized area during much of the 20th century. The Olin Chemical plant produced explosives and munitions for the wars of the last century. This remains as the Winchester ammunition plant. The Wood River petroleum refinery continues to operate on a reduced scale.

Lloyd Hopkins Field is a baseball stadium in Alton, Illinois. Owned and operated by the city of Alton, it is the home field for the Alton River Dragons, a collegiate summer baseball team in the Prospect League, and for American Legion Baseball. Hopkins Field hosted American Legion teams from 1981 to 2015, and they returned in 2020. Hopkins Field was also the home of the Bluff City Bombers in the Central Illinois Collegiate League from 1998 to 2004.In January 2020 the city of Alton signed a 10-year lease with the River Dragons. The deal called for upgrades to Hopkins Field, including the addition of a locker room, batting cages, a new scoreboard and video board, concession amenities, and seating for 1,800 people. Hopkins Field had been renovated in 2015 with updated dugouts and new batting cages, lights, siding, netting, fencing, and turf.

Chemetco was formerly one of the largest United States refiners of copper from recycled or residual sources. Its maximum output of 120,000 tons per year was approximately half of the entire U.S. copper output from recycled copper. The company website described Chemetco as one of the world's largest copper refiners and reported an estimated revenue in 1999 of $500 m. It was listed in 2000 as the 23rd-largest privately held company in the United States.The company had a history of environmental problems over its entire career, along with problems managing its wastes and by-products. Eventually, it was convicted of water pollution offences spanning a decade, which contravened US federal law. The company's former site is now a Superfund site on the National Priorities List.

Cottage Hills is an unincorporated community in Madison County, Illinois, United States. In 2018, the Cottage Hills ZIP Code area served a population of 3,604. Cottage Hills is west of Bethalto, north of Rosewood Heights, east of East Alton, and is a part of the St. Louis Metro Area. Cottage Hills has a post office with ZIP code 62018. Between 1915 and 1980 a railway under the name of St. Louis Division Old Line used to pass through the community. Similar to most communities in Madison County, Cottage Hills is a bedroom community.

The Wood River Refinery is an oil refinery located in Roxana, Illinois, approximately 15 miles (24 km) north of St. Louis, Missouri, on the east side of the Mississippi River. The refinery is currently owned by Phillips 66 and Cenovus Energy and operated by the joint-venture company WRB Refining, LLC (WRB). WRB was formed on 1 July 2007, with Encana taking a 49% interest in Wood River and also Phillips 66's Borger refinery. Encana subsequently spun off oil sands producer Cenovus and ConocoPhillips spun off Phillips 66. In return for a 49% stake in the refinery, ConocoPhillips gained a joint interest in two Alberta oil sands (bitumen) heavy oil projects: Christina Lake (Alberta) and Foster Creek. ConocoPhillips’ interest was sold to Cenovus in May 2017, leaving Cenovus as the sole owner of the assets.The complex is capable of refining 173,000 barrels (27,500 m3) of crude oil per day and is the largest refinery operated by Phillips 66. Oil is supplied from the GoM, Canada, and domestic sources through pipelines. The facility produces 85,000 barrels per day (13,500 m3/d) of gasoline along with 70,000 barrels per day (11,000 m3/d) of distillates (diesel and aviation fuel), along with petrochemical feedstocks, asphalt, and coke. A new four-drum coker unit, part of Wood River Refinery's Coker and Refinery Expansion (CORE) was completed in November 2011. The new coker has a capacity of 75,000 barrels per day and is expected to expand the capacity to handle the bitumen from the Alberta oil sands by nearly 700%. The new Wood River coker's processing capacity is approximately 200,000 - 220,000 barrels per day. The CORE project took about three years to build, with a total cost of US $3.8 billion (US $1.9 billion to Cenovus), and has increased clean product yield by 5% to approximately 85%. The expansion was undertaken specifically to handle heavy oil imported from Alberta. The refined transportation fuels products are destined for the U.S. Midwest market, including St. Louis and Chicago.An RO filtration system upgrade to treat boiler water was also completed in 2011. 3500 total feet of pipe on 800 feet of modular pipe rack was installed along movable trailers containing the filtration system. This expansion increased the amount of steam available to the refinery. Thermal cracking, stripping and power generation are some of the major processes within a refinery that use steam.Wood River Refinery was originally built by Shell in 1917. In the late 1990s, Shell and Texaco merged their downstream segments to form the Motiva (with Saudi national oil company Saudi Aramco) and Equilon joint ventures. During a prolonged period of low refining profit margins, Equilon sold the refinery to Tosco in 2003. Shortly thereafter, Phillips Petroleum acquired Tosco. When Conoco and Phillips merged, the refinery became an asset of ConocoPhillips.

Hartford is a village in Madison County, Illinois, United States, on the Mississippi River near the mouth of the Missouri River. The population was 1,185 at the 2020 census, down from 1,429 in 2010. Lewis and Clark spent the winter of 1803-04 there, near what has been designated the Lewis and Clark State Historic Site.

Civic Memorial High School is a public high school in Bethalto, Illinois, that is part of the Bethalto Community Unit School District 8. It serves students from Bethalto, Meadowbrook, Cottage Hills, and parts of Rosewood Heights and Moro. The school was originally named Bethalto High School. The name was changed to Civic Memorial High School when the new building was completed in the 1950s. The first graduating class was that of 1951. Prior to that, students attended classes through their junior year, then graduated from either Wood River High School or Roxana High School. The original Civic Memorial High School building at 910 Second St. (the current Wilbur Trimpe Middle School) housed a three-year high school (grades 10–12) until the 1974–75 school year, when the school added 9th grade. Civic Memorial moved into its present building at 200 School Street for the 1979–1980 school year.
