Tjølling

Tjølling Church (Norwegian: Tjølling kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Larvik Municipality in Vestfold county, Norway. It is located in the village of Tjøllingvollen. It is the church for the Tjølling parish which is part of the Larvik prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Tunsberg. The white, stone church was built in a long church design around the year 1150 using plans drawn up by an unknown architect. The church seats about 500 people.

Tjøllingvollen or Viksfjord is a village in Larvik Municipality in Vestfold county, Norway. The village is located about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) to the east of the town of Larvik. The village of Hem lies about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) to the northeast, the village of Verningen lies about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) to the north, and the coastal village of Ula lies about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) to the southeast.Tjølling Church is located in the north part of the village. The Vestfoldbanen railway line historically stopped at the Viksfjord Station on the south side of the village, but the station closed in 1978. The village was the administrative centre of the old municipality of Tjølling which existed from 1838 until 1988 when it became part of Larvik Municipality.

Skiringssal (Old Norse Skíringssalr) was the name of a Viking Age hall which stood at a site now known as Huseby, about 0.73 miles (1.2 km) south-west of Tjølling, a settlement a little over 3 miles (5 km) east of Larvik, in the south of the Norwegian county of Vestfold. By extension the name also referred to the local bygd, or settlement area, and in the 15th century it was probably used synonymously for the ecclesiastical parish of Tjølling. Skiringssal is mentioned in several early medieval sources, including the Ynglinga saga, the Fagrskinna and the Sögubrot af nokkrum fornkonungum. The name last occurs in 1445, in the form "Skirisall", in a hospital register from Tønsberg. This and other documents from earlier in the 15th century associate Skiringssal with locations in the parish of Tjølling. Archaeological excavations at Huseby have shown that a large hall was built there in the mid-8th century and went out of use by about 900. Excavations at Kaupang, near the shoreline south-west of Tjølling, have shown that this was the location of a trading place from about 800 to the late 10th century. The hall at Huseby may have been established by the first Norwegian members of the Yngling dynasty, the trading place at Kaupang would have been established and continued under the control of the chieftain at Huseby, and Tjølling probably began as a site for public assemblies, or things, a role which it continued to play in the 16th century.

Kaupang was a Norse term for market-place composed of kaup- (buy) and angr (fjord, harbor), hence "buy fjord" or "buy harbor" (similar to the literal translation of Copenhagen). Today, it is generally used as a name of the first town-like market-place in Norway, the Kaupang in Skiringssal, which is located in Tjølling near Larvik in Vestfold. Kaupang was an important merchant and craft center during the Viking period and as yet the first known Norwegian trading outpost.At Kaupang lie remains of one of Scandinavia’s earliest urban sites, established in year 800 A.D. Kaupang was abandoned in the mid-10th century.It has been described as Norway’s most important monument from the Viking Age.

Verningen is a village in the municipality of Larvik, Norway. Its population (SSB 2005) is 806.

Hem is a village and statistical area (grunnkrets) in Larvik municipality, Norway. Before 1988 it was a part of Tjølling municipality. The statistical area Hem, which also can include the peripheral parts of the village as well as the surrounding countryside, has a population of 780.The village Hem is located in the eastern part of the municipality. It is considered a part of the urban settlement Sandefjord, which covers the greater Sandefjord city area and stretches towards Stokke and into peripheral parts of Larvik municipality. The urban settlement Sandefjord has a population of 39,849, of which 705 people live within Larvik.

Himberg is an exclave in Sandefjord municipality, which is surrounded by Larvik municipality. Numerous efforts with the goal of merging Himberg into surrounding Larvik have failed. The Schei Committee in 1960 tried to exchange Vannøya Island, an island near Sandefjord which belonged to Larvik (Tjølling) until 1988. However, the attempt proved unsuccessful due to local opposition.A new annexation attempt took place in 1995, but was ultimately canceled due to opposition from “patriotic” Sandefjord residents in Himberg. Himberg is a rural agricultural community which consists of about ten households. It has a population of about 40 as of 2014, and has a total area of 1.4 km2 (0.54 sq. mi.). There are only four similar type exclaves in Norway, and Himberg is the most populous of Norway's exclaves.

Østre Halsen Church (Norwegian: Østre Halsen kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Larvik Municipality in Vestfold county, Norway. It is located in the eastern Halsen area of the town of Larvik. It is the church for the Østre Halsen parish which is part of the Larvik prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Tunsberg. The white and red concrete church was built in a rectangular design in 1983 using plans drawn up by the architect Roar Tollnes. The church seats about Roar Tollnespeople.

Larvik Airport, Fritzøe (Norwegian: Larvik flyplass, Fritzøe, ICAO: ENFZ) was a private airport situated at Yttersø in Larvik, Norway. Straddling the shore of the river of Numedalslågen, the airport featured a 900-meter (3,000 ft) grass runway. The airport was built in 1957.

Skinmo is a hamlet consisting of two farms in Larvik municipality, Norway. Before 1988, it was a part of Hedrum municipality. The Skinmo hamlet is located in the eastern part of the municipality. For statistical purposes it is considered a part of the urban settlement Sandefjord, which covers the greater Sandefjord city area and stretches towards Stokke and into peripheral parts of Larvik municipality. The urban settlement Sandefjord has a population of 39,849, of which 705 people live within Larvik.

Thor Heyerdahl Upper Secondary School (Norwegian: Thor Heyerdahl videregående skole) is an upper secondary school in Larvik, Norway, named for the explorer Thor Heyerdahl, who was born in the city. It was formed by combining the previous upper secondary schools in Larvik. It is one of the largest upper secondary schools in Norway, with approximately 1,650 students as of December 2013, and offers 10 programmes or courses of instruction. The school was split between several locations until a new building, built as a combined project with Arena Larvik, opened on 17 August 2009.

Nanset Church (Norwegian: Nanset kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Larvik Municipality in Vestfold county, Norway. It is located in the town of Larvik. It is the church for the Nanset parish which is part of the Larvik prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Tunsberg. The red brick church was built in a rectangular design in 1974 using plans drawn up by the architect Elisabeth Breen Fidjestøl. The church seats about 550 people.
