Oneonta High School is a public high school in Oneonta, New York. It serves grades 9–12 and is the only high school in the Oneonta City School District. The first high school in Oneonta was incorporated in 1874; the present school building, at 130 Upper East Street, opened in 1964.

The Science Discovery Center of Oneonta is a hands-on science museum that is a part of SUNY Oneonta in Oneonta, New York. The museum features more than eighty simple science experiments, focusing mainly on physics, for children as well as for adults. In addition to regular visitor hours, the center hosts school and other groups. It also sponsors special events in science education, such as Nano Days and provides family-friendly activities for major events such as Homecoming Weekend and the Otsego County Fair.

At the end of its 2015 season, the program's Executive Director, Jungeun Kim, announced the NYSMF board's decision not to reopen the camp in 2016.

Fairchild Mansion is a historic home located at Oneonta in Otsego County, New York. It is a three-story brick building with a turret, gables, a pedimented entrance porch and a porte cochere in the Queen Anne style. The original house was built in 1867 and subsequently expanded and modernized in 1897 and 1915 by its owner, George W. Fairchild (1845-1924). The home was taken over by Oneonta Masonic Lodge in 1929.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. It is located within the Oneonta Downtown Historic District established in 2003.

The Cornfield, also known as Farmers' Independent Benevolent Society Hall, is a historic social hall located at Fly Creek in Otsego County, New York. It was built in 1928 and is a one-story wood-frame building constructed as a meeting space and dance hall for the area's small Slovenian immigrant community. The original section measures 50 feet long by 24 feet, 6 inches wide. The original building was expanded in the late 1950s with a kitchen wing and pavilion.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

Oneonta is home to the State University of New York at Oneonta and Hartwick College. SUNY Oneonta began as a normal school and a teacher's college in 1889, and Hartwick College moved into the city in 1928. The approximately 5,800 students from SUNY Oneonta and the approximately 1,500 students at Hartwick make up a significant percentage of the population of Oneonta. According to the 2020 U.S. Census, Oneonta had a population of 13,079. Its nickname is "City of the Hills." While the word "oneonta" is of undetermined origin, it is popularly believed to mean "place of open rocks" in the Mohawk language. This refers to a prominent geological formation known as "Table Rock" at the western end of the city. The city is surrounded by the town of Oneonta, a separate municipal and political jurisdiction. Oneonta Municipal Airport (N66) is north of the city.
