Selah Gap

The Naches River is a tributary of the Yakima River in central Washington in the United States. Beginning as the Little Naches River, it is about 75 miles (121 km) long. After the confluence of the Little Naches and Bumping River the name becomes simply the Naches River. The Naches and its tributaries drain a portion of the eastern side of the Cascade Range, east of Mount Rainier and northeast of Mount Adams. In terms of discharge, the Naches River is the largest tributary of the Yakima River.In its upper reaches, the Naches River basin includes rugged mountains and wildernesses. The lower Naches River and its tributary the Tieton River flow through valleys with towns and irrigated orchards northwest of Yakima, where the Naches River joins the Yakima River. Historically, the river served as an important travel corridor between the east and west sides of the Cascades, via Naches Pass, used by both Native Americans and settlers. The river's name comes from the Indian words "naugh", meaning rough or turbulent, and "chez", meaning water. Among numerous spellings used historically, "Naches" is the official spelling in the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), however "Nachess" was official according to the Board on Geographic Names from 1898 to 1900.

Yakima Valley Academy was a Seventh-day Adventist elementary school and co-educational boarding high school located in Granger, WA and operated from 1921-1945. The handsome brick, three-story building that housed the academy was purchased in 1920 for $14,000 by the Upper Columbia Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. The building, which had served as a hotel prior to housing the academy, stood until August 2008, though the top story had been removed. By 1944 the school had outgrown its quarters and preparations were made to move the school to a newly purchased site at Spangle, WA where the institution opened in the fall of 1945 under the name Upper Columbia Academy. The yearbook, published annually by the student body, was named The Pitcanook. The 1938 edition lists a faculty and administration of 12 who taught a variety of subjects: Bible, German, Piano, Voice, Bookkeeping, Typing, English, Health Education, Science, Chemistry, History, Sewing, Baking, Shorthand, and Mathematics. The yearbook highlights a variety of activities and student organizations and suggests a total high school student body of 106. By 1944, this figure had grown to 170.

Selah High School is a public high school located in Selah, Washington, United States, serving students in grades 9–12. It is part of the Selah School District and enrolls approximately 1000 students yearly. Selah excels in its excellent academics, Career Technical Programs (FCCLA, FFA, TSA) as well as in its sports. The Volleyball and Baseball programs are among the best in their state at any classification. All other Selah sports also compete at a very high level. Selah offers an assortment of classes to prepare kids for their future and takes pride in helping kids achieve their goals.

The community was established around 1906 around a train station of the North Yakima and Valley Railway Company. The name was chosen because of the importance of fruit production to Yakima Valley's economy and the word 'vale' meaning valley.
