Selah, Washington

Yakima Valley Academy was a Seventh-day Adventist elementary school and co-educational boarding high school located in Granger, WA and operated from 1921-1945. The handsome brick, three-story building that housed the academy was purchased in 1920 for $14,000 by the Upper Columbia Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. The building, which had served as a hotel prior to housing the academy, stood until August 2008, though the top story had been removed. By 1944 the school had outgrown its quarters and preparations were made to move the school to a newly purchased site at Spangle, WA where the institution opened in the fall of 1945 under the name Upper Columbia Academy. The yearbook, published annually by the student body, was named The Pitcanook. The 1938 edition lists a faculty and administration of 12 who taught a variety of subjects: Bible, German, Piano, Voice, Bookkeeping, Typing, English, Health Education, Science, Chemistry, History, Sewing, Baking, Shorthand, and Mathematics. The yearbook highlights a variety of activities and student organizations and suggests a total high school student body of 106. By 1944, this figure had grown to 170.

Selah High School is a public high school located in Selah, Washington, United States, serving students in grades 9–12. It is part of the Selah School District and enrolls approximately 1000 students yearly. Selah excels in its excellent academics, Career Technical Programs (FCCLA, FFA, TSA) as well as in its sports. The Volleyball and Baseball programs are among the best in their state at any classification. All other Selah sports also compete at a very high level. Selah offers an assortment of classes to prepare kids for their future and takes pride in helping kids achieve their goals.

Selah Gap is a water gap carved by the Yakima River through the Yakima Ridge basalt formation between Yakima, Washington and Selah, Washington. The gap is traversed by BNSF Railway, Interstate 82, and Washington State Route 823. The Yakima Greenway trail for non motorized users also crosses the Yakima River at Selah Gap on an 1884 railroad bridge. The William O. Douglas Trail, named for William O. Douglas who hiked there from his home in Yakima, also crosses the gap and ascends the ridge on its way to Mount Rainier.

The Naches River is a tributary of the Yakima River in central Washington in the United States. Beginning as the Little Naches River, it is about 75 miles (121 km) long. After the confluence of the Little Naches and Bumping River the name becomes simply the Naches River. The Naches and its tributaries drain a portion of the eastern side of the Cascade Range, east of Mount Rainier and northeast of Mount Adams. In terms of discharge, the Naches River is the largest tributary of the Yakima River.In its upper reaches, the Naches River basin includes rugged mountains and wildernesses. The lower Naches River and its tributary the Tieton River flow through valleys with towns and irrigated orchards northwest of Yakima, where the Naches River joins the Yakima River. Historically, the river served as an important travel corridor between the east and west sides of the Cascades, via Naches Pass, used by both Native Americans and settlers. The river's name comes from the Indian words "naugh", meaning rough or turbulent, and "chez", meaning water. Among numerous spellings used historically, "Naches" is the official spelling in the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), however "Nachess" was official according to the Board on Geographic Names from 1898 to 1900.

Fruitvale is an unincorporated community in Yakima County, Washington, United States, located within the north city limits of Yakima. The community was established around 1906 around a train station of the North Yakima and Valley Railway Company. The name was chosen because of the importance of fruit production to Yakima Valley's economy and the word 'vale' meaning valley.

East Selah is an unincorporated community in Yakima County, Washington, United States, located east of Selah adjacent to the Yakima River.

The Yakima Valley Libraries (YVL) is a public, 17-branch library system located in the Yakima Valley region of Washington, United States. The library system's collection includes public access to books, CDs, audiobooks, DVDs, and other materials, in both Spanish and English.

The A.E. Larson Building is a prominent Art Deco office building in Yakima, Washington, built in 1931. When it was built the eleven-story brick structure was by far the tallest building in Yakima, an otherwise low-lying town, and remains the tallest building in Yakima to this day. It was built by entrepreneur Adelbert E. Larson and designed by local architect John W. Maloney.

The Capitol Theatre is a performing arts venue in Yakima, Washington. With its location in downtown Yakima and 1,500 seating capacity, it serves as the primary performing arts facility for the Yakima region.

The Masonic Temple in Yakima, Washington is a historic building constructed in 1911. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. For many years it served as a meeting hall for Yakima's Masonic Lodges, however no lodges meet in the building today.

Pomona is an unincorporated community in Yakima County, Washington, United States, located immediately northeast of Selah. The community was established in 1885 around a train station the Northern Pacific Railway called Selah. The name was changed to Pomona in 1908 because the Wenas station was commonly called Selah. Edmund Stevens, an agent for the Northern Pacific Railway, suggested the name Pomona in honor of the mythical Roman patron goddess of gardens and fruits.
