Obergailbach

Niedergailbach is a small village in the German state of Saarland and belongs to the community of Gersheim in the Saarpfalz-Kreis. In 2000 it had 581 inhabitants. Located on the border with France, it is adjacent to the French village of Obergailbach.

The European Archaeological Park at Bliesbruck-Reinheim, in the German municipality of Gersheim (Saarland) and the French municipality of Bliesbruck (Département Moselle), is a cross-border project which combines excavations and reconstructions of Celtic and Roman finds with exhibition and educational facilities. It was created in 1989 as a result of the archaeological work being done on both sides of the Franco-German border. Together with archaeological evidence from the Mesolithic Period, the Bronze Age, and the period of the Germanic migrations, the Celtic and Roman finds from the Iron Age bear witness to a history of continuous settlement in the Blies Valley that spans a period of 10,000 years.

The village belongs to the Pays de Bitche. The similarly named commune Petit-Réderching lies 6 km to the east. Localities of the commune: Brandelfing, Olferding, Welschhoff and Singling which is a former neighbour commune and a part of Gros-Réderching since 1811.

Wœlfling-lès-Sarreguemines (French pronunciation: [vœlflɛ̃ lɛ saʁɡəmin], literally Wœlfling near Sarreguemines; German: Wölflingen bei Bliesbrücken) is a commune in the Moselle department in Grand Est in north-eastern France.

The Saar Offensive was the French invasion of Saarland, Germany, in the first stages of World War II, from September 7 to October 16, 1939, in response to the German invasion of Poland on 1 September 1939. The original plans called for 40 divisions, and one armored division, three mechanised divisions, 78 artillery regiments and 40 tank battalions to assist Poland, which was then under invasion, by attacking Germany's neglected western front. Despite 30 divisions advancing to the border (and in some cases across it), the attack did not have the expected result. When the swift victory in Poland allowed Germany to reinforce its lines with homecoming troops, the offensive was halted. French forces then withdrew amid a German counter-offensive on 17 October.
