The Highland Building is a 13-story building in the East Liberty neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Construction on the building was completed in 1909, with Daniel Burnham being the principal designer. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.Henry Clay Frick originally commissioned the building. Following the Chicago school of architecture, the building features a granite base and terracotta exterior. Beginning around the 1960s, however, the building gradually fell into disrepair coinciding with the decline of East Liberty. Classical ornament on the roof was replaced with substandard material and water entered the basement. Over time, the interior would essentially become destroyed.Prior to 2012, the Highland Building experienced twenty years of complete dormancy. With assistance from the state of Pennsylvania and the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh, construction began in 2012 to restore the exterior and reconstruct the interior of the Highland Building, join it with the adjacent three-story Wallace Building, and convert the entire complex into 127 apartments. The project, now completed, is described as, "Walnut on Highland" and is mostly leased. Recently, the last of the retail space in the Wallace Building was filled by a Mexican Restaurant.

Waffle Shop: A Reality Show was a performance art project and restaurant in the East Liberty neighborhood of Pittsburgh. The restaurant was operated by Carnegie Mellon University students. The Waffle Shop was part of a trend in Pittsburgh to support performance art within the urban core. In addition to serving food, students operate a talk show live-streamed online, featuring restaurant patrons as guests.It opened in 2008 by Carnegie Mellon University art professor Jon Rubin as a 2-semester student art project. The project/restaurant was so successful during that initial run that it was continued for several more years.Some special talk shop themes have included ringtones as "art."The related sign atop the building was also used for public art purposes, and later became known as The Last Billboard. The billboard is still in place and continues to be changed periodically. Local food critics reviewed it relatively favorably, noting the unique talk show situation.It closed in 2012.

The Last Billboard was a public art billboard in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The art piece consisted of a 12-feet-by-36-feet steel frame billboard on which letters were arranged. Each month, artists were solicited to place a message on the billboard. It was curated by Jon Rubin. The billboard was located at the intersection of Highland Avenue and Baum Boulevard in the East Liberty neighborhood, above what was originally the building for Waffle Shop: A Reality Show, a restaurant that was also conceptualized by Jon Rubin.

Quantum Theatre is a professional theatre company that produces experimental productions in non-traditional performance spaces around the Pittsburgh area. Founded in 1990 by Karla Boos, current Artistic Director, the company aims to incorporate influences from world culture and the international theatre scene. Additional staff members include Stewart Urist, Managing Director, and Teresa Trich, Director of Operations.The theatre has been mentioned in American Theatre Magazine and Stage Directions Magazine. It has staged classical plays, adaptations of literature, world premieres and contemporary plays in places such as Washington's Landing, Iron City Brewery, the former Don Allen Auto City, a Downtown loft in the Cultural District, abandoned school houses and the Frick Art & Historical Center.

The UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing is a public nursing school in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was established in 1884 and is affiliated with UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center) Shadyside Hospital. It is located in the East Liberty neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The school is currently housed at 5900 Baum Blvd in the AAA Motor Square Garden building.

Motor Square Garden, also known as East Liberty Market, is a building in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Located at 5900 Baum Boulevard in the East Liberty neighborhood, it today serves as the headquarters of the Pittsburgh branch of the American Automobile Association, which owns the property. The exterior of the building features a large tin-clad, steel-framed blue dome and a yellow brick facade. The industrial interior has a large atrium with exposed steel girders and skylights above.

Hunt Armory (also known as Pittsburgh Armory) is a former armory located at 324 Emerson Street in the Shadyside neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was designed by Pittsburgh architects W.G. Wilkins Co. Announced on August 29, 1909 and budgeted at $450,000 ($13.6 million in present-day terms) it was completed by 1916. The armory was named after Spanish–American War hero, metallurgist, and industrialist Captain Alfred E. Hunt (1855–1899), best known for founding the company that would eventually become Alcoa, the world's largest producer and distributor of aluminum. The Hunt Armory occupies an entire city block covering an area of 56,000 square feet (5,200 m2), also reported as 1.84 acres.For many years, it was used (along with the Syria Mosque) as the city's main auditorium. Until the Pittsburgh Civic Arena was completed in 1961, the Hunt Armory was the largest auditorium in Pittsburgh and was frequently the host for concerts and political events including: October 20, 1944: Presidential candidate Thomas E. Dewey. October 23, 1948: President Harry S. Truman with a crowd of over 25,000. September 7 - October 4, 1952: Billy Graham's Pittsburgh crusade. October 27, 1952: Presidential candidate Dwight D. October 31, 1956: Presidential candidate Adlai Stevenson speaks to 12,000.The Armory is closed for military use, but continues to be used for other purposes. In 2008, it hosted the Handmade Arcade.By 2015, historically appropriate redevelopment was being planned under the City's Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA). In November 2021, the site opened as a public skating rink, becoming the first indoor community ice rink opened within the city of Pittsburgh in 25 years.Hunt Armory has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places since November 14, 1991. It received City of Pittsburgh historic landmark status on February 27, 2014.

The Highland Towers Apartments in the Shadyside neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is a building from 1913. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.The apartment building was designed by Pittsburgh native Frederick G. Scheibler Jr., who designed over a dozen buildings in the area. The U-shaped building has four floors of apartments and a raised basement. The façade is tapestry brick in yellow, bronze, tan and brown. Between the windows, Scheibler placed decorative tilework based on a fabric designed by Peter Behrens.
