Groom Creek

The Brook is one of the suburbs of Nelson, New Zealand. It lies to the south of Nelson and is the location of the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary, a conservation project at the head of the Brook Valley.

Sharland Creek flows south and joins Packer Creek before flowing into the Maitai / Mahitahi River near Waahi Takaaro Golf Course in Nelson, New Zealand. Sharland Creek takes its name from an early European landowner, James Henry Sharland, who bought land in the area now named Sharland Hill. The land remained in the family until 1969 when it was bought by the State Forest Service.Restoration of the Maitai River and all of its tributaries was the focus of Project Maitai / Mahitahi, a Nelson City Council and community initiative which ran from 2014 to 2018.

The Brook Waimārama Sanctuary is a nearly 700 hectare mainland "ecological island" sanctuary located 6 km south of Nelson, New Zealand. The sanctuary is the largest fenced sanctuary in New Zealand's South Island and the second largest in the country; it is the only sanctuary to feature mature New Zealand beech forest. The Brook Waimārama Sanctuary Trust was established in 2004 with the intent of restoring the flora and fauna of the Brook Valley, a former water supply for Nelson with intact beech forest. A predator-proof fence was completed in 2016 at a cost of NZD $4.2 million, and introduced mammalian pests were eradicated from within the sanctuary in 2017. The sanctuary reopened to the public in 2018, and an entrance fee regime was introduced in 2020. Reintroductions of species such as the Okarito kiwi and tuatara are planned.

Maitai is an inner suburb of Nelson, New Zealand. It lies at the western edge of Nelson city centre, immediately to the south of The Wood, on the northern bank of the Maitai River. A monument representing the location of the geographic centre of New Zealand is located in Maitai.The population was 609 in the 2013 census. This was an increase of 9 people since the 2006 Census.

Brook Stream, or Waimarama, is a major tributary of the Maitai / Mahitahi River in Nelson, South Island, New Zealand. Nelson's first water scheme was on Brook Stream, with a weir and pipeline constructed in 1867 in what is now the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary. Demand began to exceed supply, and a second weir was constructed to create the Top Dam in 1909. By the 1930s it was insufficient for Nelson's growing population. The Roding River waterworks scheme was completed in 1941 and an intake on the Maitai Mahitahi South Branch completed in 1963. The Brook Dam was decommissioned in 2000. Restoration of Brook Stream, and waterways in the Maitai catchment, has been a major focus of Project Maitai, a Nelson City Council initiative to improve the health of the Maitai River and all its tributaries.

Nelson East is an inner suburb of Nelson, New Zealand. As its name suggests, it lies to the east of Nelson city centre, along the banks of the Maitai River between the city centre and Maitai. Notable features of Nelson East include Queen's Gardens and the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology.

Botanical Gardens is a cricket ground and public reserve in Nelson, Nelson Region, New Zealand.It is located in Nelson's town belt, next to Botanical Reserve. The trigonometrical 'Centre of New Zealand', Botanical Hill, is located beside the park.The first recorded cricket match held on the ground came in January 1873 when Nelson played Auckland. The ground later held a first-class match when Nelson played Wellington on 31 December 1883, which Nelson won by 39 runs. Besides cricket, the ground also saw one of the first rugby matches to be played in New Zealand, between Nelson College and a group of local players on 14 May 1870. After Trafalgar Park's development as Nelson's main sports venue in the 1880s the Botanical Gardens was no longer used for major sports events. The ground, however, has continued to exist, and is used today by Athletic College Old Boys Cricket Club.

Nelson Central School is a state primary contributing school located in the inner city of Nelson at the top of the South Island of New Zealand teaching children of both genders aged 5 to 11 years.

Melrose House in 26 Brougham Street, Nelson, New Zealand, is registered with Heritage New Zealand as a category I structure with registration number 259. It was built for Charles Fowell Willet Watts (1823–1881), one of Nelson's earliest settlers.

Fairfield House in 48 Van Diemen Street, Nelson, New Zealand, is registered with Heritage New Zealand as a Category I structure. Originally built in 1849, today's house was constructed as a residence for Arthur Atkinson in 1872. It was at some stage owned by the Nelson College for Girls, who used it as a boarding house. After the 1929 Murchison earthquake, boarders from Nelson College also moved in, as their hostel got damaged. The house was given to Nelson City Council in 1979 and was threatened with demolition. A community group formed that had the objective of saving the house. Alan Stanton moved into the derelict building as a squatter and started restoring it. Today, it is a community centre.Atkinson, who was the brother of Premier Harry Atkinson, had an observation tower built onto the house in 1883, as his hobby was astronomy. He was tasked by the Royal Society to observe the transit of Venus in 1882. The tower had at one point been demolished, but a replica has since been built.

The Grampians are a set of prominent hills forming the southeast backdrop of Nelson, New Zealand, reaching 390 metres (1,280 ft) high.Frequented by locals and tourists alike, the Grampians are covered in a myriad of tracks ranging from leisurely strolls to relatively taxing steep inclines. Entry points to this recreational area are from The top of Collingwood Street The corner of Van Diemen and Trafalgar streets Market Road, BishopdaleA television and FM radio transmitter sits atop the hills. The transmitter was commissioned in 1971 by the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation to broadcast NZBC TV (now TVNZ 1), offering improved coverage to Nelson and Tasman compared to the existing private translators relaying the NZBC TV signal from the Mount Kaukau transmitter in Wellington.Several community and volunteer groups are working towards restoring habitats for native birds on the Grampians by reducing the impact of predators, using pest control methods in conjunction with the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary.

Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) is a public tertiary education institution at the top of the South Island in New Zealand. NMIT's main campus is in Nelson with other campuses in Blenheim, Marlborough, Woodbourne and Richmond. It has been providing tertiary education in the Nelson-Marlborough region since 1904. NMIT offers 100 programmes at certificate, diploma or degree level across a broad range of areas and has a yearly enrollment of around 3,000 equivalent full-time students, locally, nationally and internationally. NMIT is an NZQA approved Category 1 tertiary education provider and ISO 9001 certified. The region's economy includes New Zealand's largest concentration of fisheries, wine and aquaculture. It also has substantial forestry, horticulture, aviation, tourism and arts industries as well as a sizable conservation estate, including three national parks. NMIT has developed programmes that sustain the region's infrastructure as well as specialized programmes in niche areas. NMIT's programmes include Viticulture, Aquaculture, Nursing, Maritime, Adventure Tourism, Creative Industries, Business and Computing. It also delivers a wide range of trade qualifications. On 1 April 2020, NMIT was subsumed into New Zealand Institute of Skills & Technology alongside the 15 other Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs).
