The Hitching Stone

Wainman's Pinnacle, originally built as a folly (and still used as a folly), is a stone obelisk in Sutton-in-Craven, North Yorkshire. It tends to be referred to as ‘Cowling Pinnacle’ or 'The Salt Pot' and could also be seen as being a part of the village of Cowling. It has been a grade II listed building in the National Heritage List for England since 23 October 1984. Wainman’s Pinnacle is situated upon Earl Crag and is often associated with Lund’s Tower as they are both locally known as the Salt and Pepper Pots.

Earl Crag is a gritstone crag and climbing area in Craven, North Yorkshire, England. It is home to Lund's Tower, Wainman's Pinnacle, and The Hitching Stone, all of which are near Cowling.

Lund's Tower is a stone-built folly situated to the south-west of the North Yorkshire village of Sutton-in-Craven. It is also known as Cowling Pinnacle, Sutton Pinnacle, the Ethel Tower, the Jubilee Tower or, in conjunction with the nearby Wainman's Pinnacle, the pair are referred to as the Salt and Pepper Pots. It is listed in the National Heritage List for England at Grade II.

Malsis School located at a mansion known as Malsis Hall in the village of Crosshills, in North Yorkshire, England, was a co-educational independent pre-prep and preparatory school for pupils aged 3 to 13 years. The school was founded in 1920, and closed due to falling pupil numbers in 2014. Facilities at the school included a 3 km mountain bike trail, 9-hole golf course, swimming pool, all weather pitch, rifle range, 40 acres of grounds and a Chapel with windows by the renowned stained-glass artist John Piper. The school closed on 10 December 2014, when the final assembly started at 11 am and concluded at 1 pm. The next day the school trust went into administration with Ernst & Young of Leeds. The school's assets were auctioned off and the land and building sold by Eddisons, and having fully paid off its debts it passed into creditors voluntary liquidation and the company was finally dissolved on 4 August 2017 according to Companies House. In January 2015, The Old Malsis Association (OMA) was formed to represent the views of school alumni from down the years.

Malsis Hall is a historic building in Cross Hills, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. The first Malsis Hall was a manor house in existence by 1340, when it was owned by the Copley family. The hall was burned down in the 1540s during local riots against enclosure. A new hall was built for Alvery Copley in about 1550. In 1621, the Copleys sold the house to Richard Horsfall, but he was on the losing side in the English Civil War and had to raise funds by letting out the hall. It was sold in 1786, at which time it had a 300-acre estate, but by the 1860s was dilapidated. Mary Spencer inherited the house, and her husband, James Lund, funded its demolition and replacement with a new country house, completed in 1866. Later in the century, a tower was added, followed by an extension with a portico for carriages, and a service block. The hall was converted into Malsis School in 1920, with work including the addition of a war memorial chapel. The school initially leased the building, but later purchased the estate. It closed in 2014, and was converted into a care home. The building has been grade II listed since 1984. The building is constructed of stone with angle pilasters, an entablature, a pierced arcaded parapet with urns, and a slate roof, and is in Italianate style. There are two storeys, and an entrance front of twelve bays, with a porte cochère. Most of the windows have two lights, and cornices on consoles, those in the upper floor with round heads, and those in the ground floor with segmental heads. In the centre is a belvedere tower. The chapel has stained glass by John Piper.

Cowling is a village, electoral division and civil parish in the Craven district of North Yorkshire, England. It is situated on the borders with the adjacent counties of West Yorkshire, and Lancashire. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, it is a village consisting of 2,000 to 3,000 residents, measured at 2,355 in the Census 2011. The village is expanding due to new housing being built in the middle of the village. Cowling includes a variety of services to support the community including a village hall, primary school, shops, a pub, a restaurant, a pizza take-away, and hairdressers. A gala is held in Cowling every year.

Carr Head Hall is a historic house in Cowling, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. The house was probably built in the 1750s for Richard Wainman. It was enlarged later in the century with the addition of a hall and a new staircase, and was refurbished in 1851, from which time the decoration of the ground floor rooms other than the hall survives. The building was slightly altered in the early 20th century. It was Grade II* listed in 1954. During the 2010s, the building was restored by its owner, who ran a business making paintbrushes and running painting classes from the hall. The house in built of stone on a plinth, with rusticated quoins, a floor band, a cornice, and a hipped slate roof. There are two storeys, and the south front has five bays. In the centre is a doorway with Doric pilasters, rosettes and triglyphs, and a pediment The east front has five bays, the middle three bays canted out, and the north front contains a Doric porch, distyle in antis. The windows are sashes in architraves. Inside, the three first floor rooms on the south front all retain their decoration from the 1750s, and the ceiling of the central lobby is also early.

Holy Trinity Church is the parish church of Cowling, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. Cowling lay in the parish of St Andrew's Church, Kildwick until September 1845. A church had just been completed, in the Perpendicular style, designed by R. D. Chantrell. It cost a total of just under £2,000, and soon after completion was described as "a handsome structure, on a good site, and forms a very pleasing object". In 1956, new stalls were crafted, by the workshop of Robert Thompson. It was Grade II listed in 1984. The church is built of stone, with a slate roof. It consists of a nave, north and south aisles, a chancel and a west tower. The tower has two stages, diagonal buttresses, a south doorway with a moulded arch, two-light bell openings, and an embattled parapet with corner crocketed pinnacles. It originally had a west gallery, which was later removed.

Middleton is a hamlet in the Craven district of North Yorkshire, England, part of the civil parish of Cowling. It is near the border with West Yorkshire located west of Keighley, West Yorkshire and consists of only one row of stone-built cottages.

Glusburn Old Hall is a historic building in Glusburn, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. The hall originated as the local manor house, and was probably in existence by the 14th century. The current building probably dates from 1637, although the datestone has been incorrectly recut to read "1537". In the 19th century, the doorways were altered, and an extension was added to the right-hand wing, which became used as a barn. By 1891, the house had been converted into farm cottages, but it was later recombined as a single large house. The building was grade II listed in 1954. The house is built of stone with a stone slate roof, coped gables, kneelers and apex finials. It has two storeys, an entrance front with three wide gabled bays, and a rear wing on the right. The middle doorway has initials and re-cut date in the spandrels, and to the left is an embattled turret. Most of the windows are mullioned with hood moulds, and some mullions are missing. There are two chimneys. The interior has been completely altered.

Ickornshaw Mill is a historic watermill in Cowling, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. The cotton mill was constructed in 1791 by John Dehane, a local clergyman, who had received a large inheritance. There was a pond at the rear which fed the waterwheel, but it was insufficient during periods of drought. In 1820, John Halstead bought the mill, and built a larger reservoir at Cowloughton Dam on Ickornshaw Moor, to feed the millpond. The dam burst in 1849, causing much damage but no deaths. The mill escaped damage and continued to operate, while the reservoir was not rebuilt. The mill was largely destroyed in a fire in 1884, but was quickly rebuilt. Another fire in 1910 caused minor damage. By 1950, it had 200 looms, producing silk and rayon fibres.

Long Croft is a historic house in Cowling, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. The building was constructed in about 1700 as a farmhouse. The farmhouse has a parlour cross-wing, a common feature further south, but in Craven only Long Croft and Halton West Auld Hall possess one. The building has an attached barn which is at least as old and may be earlier, although it has no readily-dated features. It was little altered over the following centuries, and due to this was Grade II* listed in 1984. The farmhouse and barn are built of stone with quoins and a stone slate roof. The house has two storeys and attics, three bays, and a gabled cross-wing projecting at the rear. In the centre is a two-storey porch, the upper storey jettied over a moulded string course. It contains a doorway with a chamfered surround, and above it is a double-chamfered window with five stepped lights and a hood mould. The other windows are chamfered with mullions. Inside, there is a baffle entry, to the side of a large fireplace, and there is a similar fireplace in the kitchen. There is a spiral staircase built of stone, and repaired in places with slate. The roof has a king post truss, while the roof in the barn is queen post.
