Whirlwind I was a Cold War-era vacuum tube computer developed by the MIT Servomechanisms Laboratory for the U.S. Navy. Operational in 1951, it was among the first digital electronic computers that operated in real-time for output, and the first that was not simply an electronic replacement of older mechanical systems. It was one of the first computers to calculate in parallel (rather than serial), and was the first to use magnetic-core memory. Its development led directly to the Whirlwind II design used as the basis for the United States Air Force SAGE air defense system, and indirectly to almost all business computers and minicomputers in the 1960s, particularly because of the mantra "short word length, speed, people."

The New England Confectionery Company Factory, also known as the NECCO Candy Factory, is an historic factory complex at 250 Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The property is now owned by DFS Advisors, and is under long-term lease to Novartis. The complex, which includes the factory building, a power plant, and a modern (2003) parking garage, occupies most of an entire city block bounded by Massachusetts Avenue, Cross Street, Albany Street, and Lansdowne Street. The Moderne-style building was constructed of reinforced concrete, faced predominantly with beige brick and trimmed with limestone. On some facades smooth concrete predominates as the finish surface. The building had a water tower that was painted to resemble a roll of Necco Wafers; during the alterations of the property for use by Novartis, the water tower was retained, and is now painted with a DNA pattern in pastel colors. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

Toscanini's Ice Cream Company (known simply as Toscanini's or Tosci's) is an ice cream parlor and café in Cambridge, Massachusetts, founded in 1981. It has won the Best of Boston award for best ice cream in 1997, 2009, and 2010, as well as other Best of Boston awards. It has also been highly rated in Gourmet magazine, and has been highly rated in The New York Times food section.

The MIT Nuclear Research Reactor (MITR) serves the research purposes of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It is a tank-type 6 megawatt reactor that is moderated and cooled by light water and uses heavy water as a reflector. It is the second largest university-based research reactor in the U.S. (after the University of Missouri Research Reactor Center) and has been in operation since 1958. It is the fourth-oldest operating reactor in the country.

The Margaret Fuller House was the birthplace and childhood home of American transcendentalist Margaret Fuller (1810–1850). It is located at 71 Cherry Street, in the Old Cambridgeport Historic District area of Cambridge, Massachusetts, in the neighborhood now called "The Port" (formerly known as "Area Four") (north of Massachusetts Avenue, between Central and Kendall Squares). The house is now a National Historic Landmark. The three-story, wooden, Federal style house was built in the early 19th century, and was Fuller's home from birth until age 16. In 1902 it became the Margaret Fuller House of Cambridge, a settlement house providing information and services to help immigrants assimilate into American culture. It is now known as the Margaret Fuller Neighborhood House.

Lab Central, Inc., also known as LabCentral, is a non-profit organization started in November 2013. LabCentral built a shared laboratory facility in Kendall Square, Cambridge, Massachusetts that offers fully permitted laboratory and office space for approximately 60 emerging biotech companies where controlled conditions in which scientific research, experiments, and measurement may be performed. As a non-profit, LabCentral does not take equity in any of its companies. Its main sources of funding are revenues from user fees, as well as grants and sponsorship contributions. LabCentral officially opened on April 1, 2014.

The MIT School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (SHASS) is one of the five schools of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, US. The school has over 20 departments, department-level programs, and faculties granting SB, SM, and PhD degrees. Major fields of study include anthropology, comparative media studies, economics, history, linguistics, literature, music, philosophy, political science, and theater arts. Other programs include the Center for International Studies; Knight Science Journalism; Science, Technology, and Society; Security Studies; and HyperStudio (digital humanities).In 2018, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings rated MIT the #2 university for arts and humanities.As of 2017, the Dean of the School is Professor Melissa Nobles, and with over 200 faculty members, 330 graduate students, and 109 undergraduate majors and 161 minors, the school is the fourth largest at MIT. All MIT undergraduates must take at least 8 semesters of courses (approximately 25% of total classroom time) in SHASS as part of the General Institute Requirements for a diploma, and those minoring or majoring within the School undertake additional studies and projects.As of 2017, 4 Nobel Laureates, 7 MacArthur Fellows, and 4 Pulitzer Prize winners were members of the SHASS faculty. Additionally, 2 National Medal of Science awardees, 11 National Academy of Sciences Fellows, 57 American Academy of Arts and Sciences Fellows, 40 Guggenheim Fellowships, and 5 John Bates Clark Medalists are associated with SHASS.In March 2017, MIT announced the new Theater Arts Building (Building W97) located at 345 Vassar Street at the far western end of campus. Constructed in a completely renovated former warehouse, the facility consolidates the performance and design spaces of a new academic major in Theater Arts, which was established in 2015. The building's 25,000 square feet (2,300 m2) includes a two-story, 180-seat, multimedia-equipped performance space which can be reconfigured for each use; as well as a rehearsal studio, dressing rooms, and set and costume makerspaces.

University Park at MIT is a mixed-use urban renewal project in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States, occupying land near Central Square between the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) campus and the primarily residential neighborhood of Cambridgeport. It is a joint project of the City of Cambridge, MIT, and Brookfield Asset Management. It is not part of the MIT campus.

The Old Cambridgeport Historic District is a historic district along Cherry, Harvard and Washington Streets in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It contains some of the oldest surviving houses north of Massachusetts Avenue in the Cambridgeport section of the city. It includes the entire block of Cherry Street between Harvard and Washington Streets, as well as a few buildings on those two streets. The oldest houses are the Samuel Fay House (172 Harvard Street, built 1805) and the Margaret Fuller House (71 Cherry Street, built 1807, now a National Historic Landmark).The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, where it is spelled "Cambridgport".

The Harvard–MIT Program in Health Sciences and Technology, or HST, is one of the oldest and largest biomedical engineering and physician-scientist training programs in the United States. It was founded in 1970 and is the longest-standing collaboration between Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Within the program, graduate and medical students are registered with both MIT and Harvard and may work with faculty and affiliated faculty members from both communities. HST is a part of MIT's Institute for Medical Engineering and Science and forms the London Society at Harvard Medical School.

Central Square Theater is a non-profit theater located at 450 Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge, Massachusetts in the United States of America. It features a 200-seat black box main stage and a 50-seat studio theater.Development of the theater began in the late 1990s, when MIT began to consider options for renovating deteriorating buildings it owned on Massachusetts Avenue, including a café and a convenient store. With the help of the Cambridge Historical Commission, the Institute developed a plan to replicate aspects of the original structure and develop a black box theater and retail and office space. It is a collaboration of two separate theater companies—Underground Railway Theater, founded in 1976 in Oberlin, Ohio, and the Nora Theatre Company, founded in 1988 by Mary C. Huntington. With support from the Boston Foundation Arts Fund, the two companies combined forces and moved into the state-of-the-art Central Square Theater in 2008. They continue to maintain their distinct identities.The two companies together produce over 200 performances per year and reach an audiences of over 25,000 people. The Boston Foundation has cited Central Square Theater as "one of the organizations that has contributed to making Greater Boston one of the most culturally rich cities in the world".As of 2013, the artistic director of the Nora Theatre was Lee Mikeska Gardner. The artistic director of Underground Railway Theater is Debra Wise.

The F. A. Kennedy Steam Bakery is a historic bakery at 129 Franklin Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts that first produced the Fig Newton in 1891.
