The village lies on the Monarch's Way long-distance footpath that approximates the escape route taken by King Charles II in 1651 after being defeated in the Battle of Worcester.Charlton Horethorne in the 21st century is a village with successful businesses, a primary school and a village hall that was purchased in 1923 from the Army as a memorial to the fallen in the First World War. Despite its age and the fact that it was previously used as a wooden mess hall, it is used on a frequent and regular basis by a wide range of groups and activities.The village benefits from the presence of The Village Shop and a pub called The Kings Arms that offers food and accommodation.

It is a Geological Conservation Review site. Laycock Railway Cutting is the best single exposure of the Bathonian ’Fuller's Earth Rock’ in South Somerset. Ammonites indicating the Morrisi and Subcontractus zones of the Middle Bathonian are frequent. Ammonites are generally extremely rare at this level in Britain and their presence at Laycock is of international stratigraphic importance. The combination of features of both litho- and chrono-stratigraphical importance make Laycock Railway Cutting a key British Bathonian locality.

Sigwells is a hamlet located in an area rich in archaeology remains, overlooking Cadbury Castle in Somerset, England. It was the target of research by the South Cadbury Environs Project, which produced significant Early Bronze Age and Middle and Late Iron Age archaeology. Of national importance was the identification of the earliest known metalworking building in Britain, dated to Middle Bronze Age (12th century BC). It has been designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument (No:199838).

In 1931, the civil parish had a population of 80. On the 1 April 1933, the civil parish was merged with Compton Pauncefoot. Compton Pauncefoot holds a Parish Meeting twice a year and has no Parish Council. The combined parish has approximately 130 residents and around 35 houses in each village. The civil parish is in the Blackmore Vale ward of the Somerset Council area. Blackford is designated as a Conservation Area.

Royal Naval Air Station Charlton Horethorne, (RNAS Charlton Horethorne; or HMS Heron II) is a former Royal Naval Air Station in the hamlet of Sigwells in Somerset, England. It opened in 1942, as a flying training base under the administrative care of HMS Heron. It closed in 1948 and has since been returned to agricultural use.

Historically the village was part of the hundred of Horethorne in neighbouring Somerset.All Saints' Church has grown from an Anglo-Saxon two-room design and contains original Norman work. Murals on pillars were discovered in 1848 but were destroyed by their exposure. Two stained-glass windows date from the fourteenth century. An unusual addition is a carving of an angel's wing which was blown off Amiens Cathedral in World War I and then donated to the church.
