Carlisle is a home rule-class city in Nicholas County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 2,010 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Nicholas County. It is located at the junction of Kentucky Route 32 and Kentucky Route 36, about halfway between Lexington and Maysville.

The William Mathers House, on Kentucky Route 36 in Nicholas County, Kentucky near Carlisle, was started in 1812. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.It includes elements of Greek Revival and Federal architecture. It was started in 1812 by William Mathers as a two-room four-bay Federal-style brick building, with brick laid in Flemish bond. The bricks were fired on site, using clay brought about 10 miles from Pleasant Valley.Around 1858 a two-story Greek Revival section, also using Flemish bond masonry, was added by William Mathers' son Barton W. Mathers. Around 1920 a Colonial Revival porch was added over the entrance to this section.

Nicholas County is a county located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. As of the 2020 census, the population was 7,537. Its county seat is Carlisle, which is also the only incorporated community in the county. Founded in 1799, the county is named for Col. George Nicholas, the "Father of the Kentucky Constitution."

Lake Carnico is a 114-acre (0.46 km2) reservoir in Nicholas County, Kentucky. It was constructed in 1962. The name Lake Carnico came alive from a name contest that was held by Charles Cox from July 27, 1961, to August 5, 1961. Departments such as the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Kentucky Highway Department, and the "Chain of Lakes" state legislation, built a dam and started building properties to surround Lake Carnico. The geography aspect about Lake Carnico is that the water is fresh and the type of fish that live in the lake are Sunfish, Channel Catfish, Flathead and much more. The name of the group of citizens who found Lake Carnico is unknown till this day.

Forest Retreat is a historic home of Kentucky governor (during 1828–1832) and United States Senator Thomas Metcalfe, located in Nicholas County, Kentucky. It is currently operated as a Bed & Breakfast hotel and event venue. It was built in 1795. The grounds of Forest Retreat include the Metcalfe family burial plot. Interred at this plot are Thomas Metcalfe (1780–1855) and various of his relatives, and 1954 Kentucky Derby-winning horse, Determine. Thomas Metcalfe was a stonemason and later 10th Governor of Kentucky, and he contributed to the building of this house then later retired to here.The farm deteriorated until 1933 when it was bought by Dr. Eslie Asbury. Later his son used it as a working farm and he had a horse, Determine, win the 1954 Kentucky Derby. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The 22-acre (8.9 ha) listing included three contributing buildings in addition to the farmhouse.An earlier home of Thomas Metcalfe, the Thomas Metcalf House in Robertson County, is also listed on the National Register. It was built by Thomas in c.1810.

The Stone Barn on Brushy Creek, also known as the Ball Barn, is a historic and unusual stone barn which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. It is located on U.S. Route 68 in Nicholas County, Kentucky near Carlisle.It is a 23 by 40 feet (7.0 m × 12.2 m) dry stone barn.It is a "unique stone barn with connection to slave trade".

Eden Shale Hills of the Eden Shale soil type is a broad area of short, steep hills roughly separating the Inner Bluegrass region and Outer Bluegrass region of Kentucky. They occur generally from around Oldham County in the West to Fleming County in the East. The hills are 150 feet or less in height.

The Erasmus Riggs House, near Carlisle, Kentucky, is a stone house built in 1820. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.It is a one-and-a-half-story dry stone hall-parlor plan house. It includes elements of Federal style, and is notable especially as a work of Thomas Metcalf (stonemason and later governor of Kentucky).

Myers is an unincorporated community in Nicholas County, Kentucky, United States. It lies along Route 32 northeast of the city of Carlisle, the county seat of Nicholas County. Its elevation is 627 feet (191 m).

East Union is an unincorporated community in Nicholas County, Kentucky, United States. It lies along Route 57 south, south of the city of Carlisle, the county seat of Nicholas County. Its elevation is 853 feet (260 m).

Barterville is an unincorporated community in Nicholas County, in the U.S. state of Kentucky.

Bayless Quarters, near North Middletown, Kentucky, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The listing included three contributing buildings.It includes Greek Revival and Federal architecture.The main structure is a one-story two-bay dry stone quarters. A smokehouse is also included.
