Prairiewood is a suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia 34 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the City of Fairfield. It is part of the Greater Western Sydney region. Prairiewood is primarily a residential suburb that is also home to a golf course, Fairfield Showground, schools, a leisure centre and a major shopping centre.

On 15 April 2024, at approximately 7:15 pm local time, a knife attack took place at Christ The Good Shepherd Church in Wakeley, a suburb of Sydney, Australia. During a live-streamed sermon, the attacker walked up to the pulpit, first stabbing bishop Mari Emmanuel, resulting in permanent vision loss in Emmanuel's right eye, before stabbing a priest and injuring another churchgoer. While no one was killed, this attack was the second stabbing incident to have taken place in Sydney in three days, following the deadly mass stabbing at Bondi Junction. The New South Wales Police Force have arrested a 16-year-old male over the attack. They have classified the stabbing as a terrorist attack, but have not revealed the name or exact motive of the accused. Wakeley is home to many Christians belonging to the Assyrian diaspora, including Emmanuel himself.

The Fairfield Hospital is a district hospital located in Prairiewood, a western suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Located in the City of Fairfield, it has about 200 beds and provides general medical, physiotherapy, general surgical, obstetric, paediatric, emergency, ambulatory care, and drug health services. In addition to its district hospital level role, Fairfield Hospital hosts two major specialist units. It hosts the major specialist hand surgery unit for South Western Sydney. It is also the major elective orthopaedic surgery site for the area, and is the host of the Whitlam Joint Replacement Centre. Patients from Fairfield can also be transferred to Liverpool Hospital, which is the second largest hospital in the state with 900+ beds and significantly larger surgical & life support services available. An onsite academic unit affiliated with UNSW (University of New South Wales) Medicine provides general practice services, medical education and training, and conducts primary care, health services and health informatics research.

Prairiewood High School is a government-funded co-educational dual modality partially academically selective and comprehensive secondary day school located in Wetherill Park, a south-western suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.Established in 1984, the school caters for approximately 1,200 students from Year 7 to Year 12, including 74 percent of whom come from a language background other than English. The school is operated by the New South Wales Department of Education.

Stockland Wetherill Park (known as “Stockies” to locals) is a shopping mall in Wetherill Park, Sydney, Australia. Being an indoor and outdoor shopping centre, it is 47th-largest by area in the country. Costing $142 million to build, the centre was established in 1983 and has been through four phases of redevelopment, with the major one completed in September 2016, where it had undergone a $228 million renovation with some 5,600 m2 (60,000 sq ft) of retail space.

The area was linguistically diverse, with Vietnamese, Arabic, Assyrian Neo-Aramaic, or Cantonese languages spoken in households, and ranged from two times to seventeen times the national averages.The Smithfield–Wetherill Park Industrial Estate is the largest industrial estate in the Southern Hemisphere and is the centre of manufacturing and distribution in GWS, with more than 1,000 manufacturing, wholesale, transport and service firms.

Mary MacKillop Catholic College is an independent Catholic single-sex secondary day school for girls, located in the South-western Sydney suburb of Wakeley, New South Wales, Australia. The college provides a Catholic and general education to students covering Year 7 to Year 12 from the Smithfield, Fairfield, Cabramatta and Villawood parishes in the Fairfield area of Sydney.

Westfields Sports High School (abbreviated as WSHS) is a government-funded co-educational comprehensive and specialist secondary day school, with speciality in sports, located in Fairfield West, a western suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Established in 1963, the school caters for approximately 1,660 students in 2018, from Year 7 to Year 12, of whom three percent identified as Indigenous Australians and 66 percent were from a language background other than English. The school is operated by the NSW Department of Education; the principal is Andrew Rogers. Westfields Sports High School is a member of the NSW Sports High Schools Association. The school sits on a total area of approximately seven hectares (seventeen acres).

St Luke Parish is one of the 57 parishes of Cumberland County, New South Wales, a cadastral unit for use on land titles. It is bounded by Prospect Creek in the north-east, Georges River in the south-east, and Cowpasture Road in the west. It was named after the Anglican church of St Lukes in Liverpool, which was completed in 1819. The parish is mentioned in various legislation dealing with property law for the city of Liverpool.The parish includes the Sydney suburbs of Wetherill Park, Smithfield, Bossley Park, Prairiewood, Fairfield West, Wakeley, Canley Heights, Canley Vale, Lansvale, Warwick Farm (including the racecourse), Ashcroft, Busby, Sadleir, Heckenberg, Hinchinbrook, Green Valley, Miller, Cartwright, Lurnea, Prestons and part of Casula. The Main Southern railway line passes through the parish near its eastern edge, including the stations of Casula, Liverpool, Warwick Farm, Cabramatta, Canley Vale and Fairfield.

Wetherill Park is a suburb in Greater Western Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Wetherill Park is located 34 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the City of Fairfield. The 2016 census recorded that Wetherill Park as having a resident population of 6,127. Just under half (47.5%) of these residents were born in Australia. The area is 11.2 km2. Most residents live in the south-east corner, the larger portion of the suburb being an industrial area.Wetherill Park sits on the southern border of Prospect Reservoir. Located partially in the suburb, the Smithfield-Wetherill Park Industrial Estate is the largest industrial estate in the southern hemisphere and is the centre of manufacturing and distribution in Greater Western Sydney.

The Cumberland Plain Woodland, also known as Cumberland Plain Bushland and Western Sydney woodland, is a grassy woodland community found predominantly in Western Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, that comprises an open tree canopy, a groundcover with grasses and herbs, usually with layers of shrubs and/or small trees.Situated in the Cumberland Plain, the Cumberland Plain Woodland (CPW) is a savanna that features dry sclerophyll woodlands, grasslands and/or forests, reminiscent of Mediterranean forests. According to Office of Environment and Heritage, the community falls predominantly within the Coastal Valley Grassy Woodlands region, which are part of the Grassy Woodlands formation found in the eastern corridor of New South Wales.Currently, less than 6% of the Woodlands remain in small parts distributed across the western suburbs of Sydney, totaling only around 6400 hectares. Cumberland Plain Woodland was listed as an Endangered Ecological Community under the Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995 in June 1997. The greatest threats to the Cumberland Plain Woodland include land clearing for agriculture, urban sprawl and the introduction of harmful weed species.
