Drumlithie is a village in the Howe of the Mearns in southern Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Situated seven miles south of Stonehaven in the parish of Glenbervie, it is affectionately known by locals as "Skite", although the origin of this name remains disputed. The name "Drumlithie" may incorporate the Gaelic word druim, meaning "ridge". Previously a weaving village and dating back at least to the beginning of the 17th century, Drumlithie has a small steeple at its heart. This unique structure was built in 1777 and was rung to for the regulation of the meal hours of the weavers. The story goes that when it was first built, the locals were so proud of it that they would take it indoors when it rained. Drumlithie is noted for its appearance in the classic Lewis Grassic Gibbon novel Sunset Song, while neighbouring Glenbervie is the final resting place of the great-grandparents of famous Scottish poet Robert Burns. Drumlithie is also twinned with Couture-d'Argenson in France. The village school is called Glenbervie Primary, and is attended by around 70 local children from the village and surrounding area.

The Stonehaven derailment was a fatal railway accident that occurred at 09:38 BST on 12 August 2020, when a passenger train returning to Aberdeen hit a landslip, near Carmont, west of Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, following severe rain. Of the nine people aboard, three were killed, and six were injured. The accident was the first in the United Kingdom in which a passenger was killed on a train since the 2007 Grayrigg derailment, the first major accident involving a High Speed Train since the 2004 Ufton Nervet rail crash, and the first fatal accident in which a train hit a landslip since the 1995 Ais Gill rail accident. Network Rail faced health and safety charges relating to the crash. After pleading guilty at the High Court in Aberdeen in September 2023, the company was fined £6.7 million for its failings.

Mergie is a settlement in Aberdeenshire approximately six miles west of Stonehaven, Scotland. Situated in the former Kincardineshire slightly south of the Slug Road.

Bogjurgan Hill is an elevated landform at the southern verge of the Fetteresso Forest in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Its top is at an elevation of 299 metres (981 ft) above sea level. Historical features in this region of Kincardineshire include Fetteresso Castle, Drumtochty Castle and Muchalls Castle.

The Fetteresso Forest is a woodland that is principally coniferous situated in the Mounth range of the Grampian Mountains in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The forest has a number of prominent mountain peaks including the Hill of Blacklodge and Craiginour peak. A good overlook for viewing the forest from the north side lies on an unnamed tarmack road which leads north from the Slug Road to the Raedykes Roman site. The Cowie Water flows through and drains much of the forest. To the north of the easternmost part of the forest is the archaeological site Raedykes Roman Camp, as well as Cowton Burn. The Slug Road runs along much of the northeast perimeter of Fetteresso Forest. Notable features in this vicinity include Dunnottar Castle, Fetteresso Castle, Bogjurgan Hill and Muchalls Castle.

The Castle of Fiddes is a 16th-century tower house in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, located around 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) south-west of Stonehaven. It is dated 1592 on a window lintel, with a later date of 1673 on the east wall suggesting a renovation at this time. It was the property of the Arbuthnott family, who sold it in the later 17th century to the Thomson family of Arduthie. It was modernised around 1930 and remains occupied. It is a category A listed building. The four-storey tower is built on an unusual variant of the L-plan, with a large circular stair tower and several projecting turrets supported on corbels.

Cryne Corse Mounth is an old droving road which ran south across the high ground from the Dee valley in Aberdeenshire, eastern Scotland. Much of the route is now afforested. It is one of a number of old tracks which passed over the Mounth, an eastern extension of the Grampian Mountains. The route departs the modern A957 road at a sharp bend at Spyhill and climbs steeply to the vicinity of Red Beard's Well near the Durris transmitting station. The well itself is named from the leader of a gang of highwaymen who lay in wait for travellers on this route. At its south end the route meets the public road near Cleuchead north of Glenbervie. Almost all of the route now lies within an area of conifer plantations, known in part as Fetteresso Forest. Edward I is said to have used the route in 1296, as subsequently did William Wallace. Cattle were driven along the route to Herscha Hill, north of Fordoun where an annual cattle fair known as St Palladius' or Paldy Fair was held each July. An alternative name for the route is Cryne Cross. Parts of the route are annotated on modern Ordnance Survey mapping as 'Cryne Corse Road (Track)'.

Rickarton is a settlement in Aberdeenshire. It is situated on the A957 to the northwest of Stonehaven. Rickarton was served by the 105 bus between Stonehaven and Banchory until its withdrawal in 2018. Rickarton was home to a Church of Scotland church until its closure in the late 1970s.

Tewel is a hamlet located approximately two miles west of Stonehaven, Kincardineshire on the Auchenblae Road in Northeast Scotland. It consists of: Tewel Farm Tewel School and Schoolhouse Four semi detached houses One cottage (derelict)

Arbuthnott (Scottish Gaelic: Obar Bhuadhnait, "mouth of the Buadhnat") is a hamlet and parish in the Howe of the Mearns, a low-lying agricultural district of Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It is located on the B967, east of Fordoun (on the A90) and north-west of Inverbervie (on the A92). The nearest railway station is Laurencekirk. The most salient feature of the hamlet is the 13th century Parish Church of St Ternan, in which the Missal of Arbuthnott was written. Today the church is part of the combined parish of Arbuthnott, Bervie and Kinneff. Lewis Grassic Gibbon, an author remembered for his novels about life in the Mearns, grew up at Bloomfield in the parish of Arbuthnott. A small museum in the hamlet is dedicated to him, named the Lewis Grassic Gibbon Centre. This is built as an extension to the village hall, and contains an exhibition about the author and his work. The centre also contains a café, and post office facilities. Arbuthnott House, the seat of the Viscount of Arbuthnott, is near the hamlet.

The Durris transmitting station is a broadcasting and telecommunications facility, situated close to the town of Stonehaven, within Durris Forest, within the area also known historically as Kincardineshire (grid reference NO763899). It is owned and operated by Arqiva, and is the tallest structure in Scotland.
