Barbu Church

The Houen Margarete Foundation (Norwegian: Den Houenske Margarete stiftelse), often simply referred to as the Margarete Foundation (Norwegian: Margarethestiftelsen), is a Norwegian foundation. It was created by a gift of money from Anton Christian Houen to the municipality of Arendal in 1891. The foundation was named after Houen's mother and its purpose was to build an old-age home and a park facility. The monetary gift was NOK 200,000. Houen gave detailed instructions for the house and park design, house rules, and statutes. The statutes were approved by the Arendal executive council in September 1891.The home was intended for honorable old men and women (hæderlige gamle Mænd og Kvinder) at least sixty years old who could no longer earn a sufficient livelihood and who had no close relatives to take care of them. It was to be built in beautifully rural setting that was completely healthy and openly situated. The institution was to be a source of pride for Arendal.The foundation looked for a suitable place in the Arendal area and chose a property Åsen in Barbu, a location with attractive views toward Galte Sound (Galtesund), Arendal's shipping lane. The area was expanded with several purchased parcels, and the result was a park between the streets Gamle Songevei and Kystveien. An attractive park was created there in the early 1900s, with ponds, sculptures, lawns, flowerbeds, and a playground. The park became an attraction for the city's inhabitants. Concerts and other events were held, and the park was widely visited. However, the foundation's capital was not sufficient to build the Margarete Foundation's residence, which was not realized until 1955 with municipal grants. The original park is much smaller today. Some of it disappeared due to building and expanding the old age home, and some of it has become parking space, and a private outdoor area and building site for the ABBL/Kuviga Housing Cooperative. The foundation's statutes state that the property must be protected against future buildings disturbing its rural character. The foundation's archive is located at the Aust-Agder cultural-historical center.

Barbu is a former municipality in the old Aust-Agder county in Norway. Today, it is part of the is part of the town of Arendal in Agder county. The 15.3-square-kilometre (5.9 sq mi) municipality existed from 1878 until 1902 when it was merged into the town of Arendal. The municipality was located just to the north of what was then the 0.34-square-kilometre (84-acre) town of Arendal. The administrative centre of the small, urban municipality was called Barbu as well. Barbu Church was the church for the municipality.Today, the name Barbu refers to the village-like place located in head of the Galtesundet strait within the town of Arendal. Barbu is also a parish (sogn) in the Arendal prosti (deanery) within the Diocese of Agder og Telemark.

Arendal Station (Norwegian: Arendal stasjon) is the terminus railway station of the Arendal Line, located in Arendal, Norway. The station opened on 23 November 1908 and is served by the Go-Ahead Norge.

The Grimstad Line (Norwegian: Grimstadbanen) was a 22-kilometer (14 mi) long railway line between Grimstad and Rise in Norway. The line was a branch of the Arendal Line, which is in turn a branch of the Sørland Line. Opened as the Grimstad–Froland Line on 14 September 1907, it was originally a private railway. The line was nationalized and taken over by the Norwegian State Railways in 1912. The railway was originally built with 1,067 mm (3 ft 6 in) narrow gauge, but was converted to standard gauge in 1936. Because of the cumbersome transfers, the line had few passenger and little freight. It was closed and demolished in 1961.

Aust-Agder County Municipality (Norwegian: Aust-Agder fylkeskommune) was the regional governing administration of the old Aust-Agder county in Norway. The county municipality was established on 1 January 1976 when the law was changed to allow elected county councils in Norway. The county municipality was dissolved on 1 January 2020, when Aust-Agder was merged with the neighboring Vest-Agder county, creating the new Agder county which is led by the Agder County Municipality. The main responsibilities of the county municipality included the running of eight upper secondary schools with about 4,500 pupils. It was also in charge of county-wide regional planning, county roads, public transport, dental care, culture, and cultural heritage. The administrative centre of the county is the town of Arendal. Stein Ytterdahl was the last County Governor of Aust-Agder (from 2016 until its dissolution in 2020, there was one county governor for both Aust-Agder and Vest-Agder counties). The Governor was the representative of the King and Government of Norway in the county, functioning as the connection between the state and the municipalities.

The city is the administrative centre of the municipality of Arendal and the seat of the County Governor of Agder. The city also includes a small area in the neighbouring municipality of Grimstad as well. In Norway, Arendal is considered a by which can be translated as either a "town" or "city" in English. The 27.14-square-kilometre (6,710-acre) city has a population (2019) of 37,815 and a population density of 1,393 inhabitants per square kilometre (3,610/sq mi). The city does cross municipal boundaries due to its growth over the years. In 2019, 0.09 square kilometres (22 acres) of the city with 112 residents were located in neighbouring Grimstad municipality. This area was mostly north of the Fevik area in Grimstad, south of the city centre.The offices of UNEP/GRID-Arendal are located in the town of Arendal. There are several churches in the city of Arendal including Trinity Church, Bjorbekk Church, Barbu Church and Stokken Church.

Kløcker's House - Arendal Museum (Kløckers Hus, Arendal bymuseum) is a museum located centrally at Arendal in Agder, Norway. It is dedicated to the culture and history of Arendal with a special focus on the Kløcker family.

Trinity Church (Norwegian: Trefoldighetskirken) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Arendal Municipality in Agder county, Norway. It is located in the central part of the town of Arendal. It is the church for the Trefoldighet parish. It is also the seat of the Arendal prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Agder og Telemark. The red, brick, neo-Gothic church was built in a cruciform basilica design in 1888 using plans drawn up by the architect Christian Fürst. The church seats about 850 people.

Arendal Town hall (Norwegian: Arendal rådhus og kulturhus) is located in the middle of downtown Arendal, Norway. The building's two theater halls have been given names from the two lighthouses outside Arendal, Store Torungen Lighthouse and Lille Torungen Lighthouse. Central to the building is a large hall, and surrounding this hall are communal offices. In front of the Town hall lies Sam Eydes plass, and surrounding the block are bus and taxi stops. The building is designed by the architect company LPO Arkitektur & Design AS in Oslo. The building's largest theater and concert hall, Store Torungen, has 700 seats. The chairs can be pushed back into the rear wall, which gives place to 1300 standing people. A smaller hall, Lille Torungen, has 150 seats.

Arendal Airport, Rådhuskaien (Norwegian: Arendal flyvehavn, Rådhuskaien) was a water aerodrome in Arendal, Norway, which operated between 1935 and 1939. Situated at Rådhuskaien, it served the scheduled coastal seaplane service operated by Norwegian Air Lines.

Aust-Agder District Court (Norwegian: Aust-Agder tingrett) was a district court in Agder county, Norway. The court was based in the town of Arendal. The court existed from 2004 until 2021. It had jurisdiction over the eastern part of the county which included the municipalities of Grimstad, Arendal, Froland, Åmli, Tvedestrand, Vegarshei, Risør, and Gjerstad. Cases from this court could be appealed to Agder Court of Appeal.The court was a court of first instance. Its judicial duties were mainly to settle criminal cases and to resolve civil litigation as well as bankruptcy. The administration and registration tasks of the court included death registration, issuing certain certificates, performing duties of a notary public, and officiating civil wedding ceremonies. Cases from this court were heard by a combination of professional judges and lay judges.
