Folly Gate

The A386 is a primary route in Devon, England. It runs from Plymouth on the south coast to Appledore on the north coast. The road starts in the centre of Plymouth, and forms Tavistock Road, the main route out of the city to the north. It crosses a section of Dartmoor to Yelverton and Tavistock. The A386 then heads northeast across the western fringe of Dartmoor past the village of Lydford to the A30 west of Okehampton. It passes to the west of Okehampton to reach Hatherleigh, where the road joins the valley of the River Torridge. It follows the valley to, Meeth, Merton, Great Torrington, Bideford and finally Appledore.

Inwardleigh is a village and civil parish about 3 and a half miles north north west of Okehampton railway station, in the West Devon district, in the county of Devon, England. The parish contains the village of Folly Gate. The A386 road runs through the parish. In 2011 the parish had a population of 491. The parish touches Hatherleigh, Sampford Courtenay, Okehampton Hamlets, Jacobstowe and Northlew.

The West Okement is a river in north Dartmoor in Devon in south-west England. It rises at West Okement Head near Cranmere Pool and flows in a generally NW direction past Black-a-Tor Copse and into Meldon Reservoir. After exiting the reservoir it flows in a generally northeast direction towards Okehampton, where it joins the East Okement River to form the River Okement. Its total length is roughly 16 kilometres (10 mi). It is crossed by Meldon Viaduct.

Rattle Brook is a brook in north Dartmoor in Devon in south-west England. It is situated East of Great Links Tor, and rises by the Rattlebrook Peatworks on remote moorland in the western section of Dartmoor National Park. It flows past Bleak House with Green Tor to the east and Higher and Lower Dunna Goat Tors to the west. It runs between Amicombe Hill and Rattlebrook Hill to join the River Tavy at the mouth of Tavy Cleave.

Brightley Priory was founded in 1133 as a Cistercian monastery. It was built in 1136 and was situated about two miles north of Okehampton in Devon and was abandoned by the monks after only 5 years on their removal to a nearby site which became Forde Abbey.

Jacobstowe is a village and civil parish on the west bank of the River Okement, about 4 miles (6.4 km) north of Okehampton in the West Devon district of Devon, England. The village is in the A3072 road that links Copplestone with Lamerton Cross, at the junction where it is joined by the B3216 road from Basset's Cross. National Cycle Route 27 and the Tarka Trail public footpath pass through the village. The 2011 Census recorded the parish's population as 194.There was never a pub here as many people believe.

Okehampton Hamlets is a civil parish in the Borough of West Devon and the English county of Devon, it runs independently from the Okehampton Town Council, meetings are held at the Meldon Village Hall. The Parish of Okehampton Hamlets is a rural parish situated in West Devon. It is made up of the hamlets of Brightley, Southcott, Meldon and Stockley. The parish occupies 15.48 square miles and it has an estimated population of 1,765. The hamlet of Southcott, which is predominantly agricultural with a number of small agricultural enterprises, having merged into one larger agricultural unit to secure the fragile agricultural community which has struggled in the past. The hamlet of Brightley lies north of Okehampton. The River Okement runs through the hamlet dividing Abbeyford Woods from the flat farmland. Farming is the main commercial activity due to the decline of forestry activity in Abbeyford Woods. The leat which once powered Brightley Mill can still be seen and just inside the hamlet at Brightley Farm stands a wall, dating back to the 12th century, on the site of an ancient Abbey, hence the name Abbeyford Woods. The hamlet of Meldon, which is rich in industrial archaeological remains, is home to Meldon Dam which across the ravine towards Meldon Viaduct which is now part of the National Cycle Route and a network of paths around Meldon Quarries, now a geological Site of Special Scientific Interest. The Meldon Woods belong to Okehampton Hamlets Parish Council and the Council is working with the Dartmoor National Park Authority to reintroduce traditional coppicing techniques to increase biodiversity and as a result the woodland now supports a variety of wildlife including roe deer, foxes, wrens and tree creepers and much more.

Okehampton Interchange (formerly known as Okehampton Parkway) is a railway station in Okehampton, Devon on the Dartmoor Line. The station is sited off Exeter Road, by the Business Park and close to the junction with the A30, in the Stockley Hamlet area of Okehampton. Its location will allow it to serve 900 new homes that are to be built nearby. Following the Government announcing the reopening of some of the rail lines that were closed in the 1960s and 1970s, the line through the site was proposed for a new intermediate station between Okehampton and Crediton. Devon County Council purchased a site for a new station.

Exbourne is a village and civil parish in the English county of Devon. The Anglo-Saxon origin of the name is gæces burn - Cuckoo Stream. It occupies a hillside location between the River Okement and the Hole Brook, about 5 miles north of Okehampton in West Devon, and height above sea level ranges between 280 Ft. and 484 Ft. It lies in a primarily agricultural location and the local parish council represents both Exbourne and nearby Jacobstowe. The population of the ward which represents Exbourne and all surrounding villages was 1,695 at the 2011 census.The village contains a Conservation Area, in which the principle building is the Church of St.Mary with its embattled tower and some fabric dating from XIV c. The present Manor House was built ca. 1830, and the manorial court was formerly held at Court Barton. There is a Church of England Primary School which has three classes with about sixty children on roll.. Other public buildings include the Methodist Chapel and the Village Hall, which was formerly the Manor Hall. An early Bible Christian chapel and Sunday School still stand, converted for residential use. The public house is called the 'Red Lion' which has undergone extensive work.There is an eco-friendly underground community shop, cafe and post office (opened 2012), which has been funded through grants and local funding.A garage, filling station and car workshop (RB Tyres) lies at the crossroads with the A3072. At the boundary with Jacobstowe stands an ancient packhorse bridge over the Okement river.

Halstock Wood is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) within Dartmoor National Park in Devon, England. It is located in the valley of the East Okement River 1.5km southeast of Okehampton Railway Station. This woodland site is protected because of the upland habitat dominated by sessile oak.
