Empingham Marshy Meadows

The North Brook is a small watercourse in Rutland in the East Midlands of England. It is a tributary of the River Gwash and part of the River Welland catchment.

Empingham is a village in the county of Rutland in the East Midlands of England. The population of the civil parish was 815 at the 2001 census including Horn and increasing to 880 at the 2011 census. It lies close to the dam of Rutland Water and the A606 runs through the village. During construction, Empingham Reservoir was the name of the reservoir but it was renamed Rutland Water to preserve the name of the county which was being merged with Leicestershire. The village's name means 'farm/settlement of the people of Empa'.The church of St Peter was a Peculiar of the see of Lincoln. When the diocese of Peterborough was created, this church remained tied to Lincoln Cathedral and the title of a Prebend there. To the north east on the Great North Road (now A1) the Battle of Empingham was fought in 1470 as part of the Wars of the Roses. The battle is also known as Battle of Losecoat Field (or Losecote Field), supposedly because the defeated Lancastrians, when fleeing, threw off the distinguishing clothing. However the name probably predates the battle and means pigsty field. Forms of Losecote also appear as field names in other parishes in Rutland. Contemporary accounts refer to the battle site as Hornfield. An adjacent woodland is now called Bloody Oaks.

Horn is a former civil parish, now in the parish of Exton and Horn, in the county of Rutland, England. In 2001 it had a population of 9, which was included in the civil parish of Empingham at the 2011 census. The parish is part of the Exton Hall estate of the Earls of Gainsborough. The civil parish, with just three properties, was abolished on 1 April 2016 and merged with Exton to form "Exton and Horn".

Bloody Oaks Quarry is a 1.3-hectare (3.2-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest north-west of Great Casterton in Rutland. It is owned and managed by the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust.This site has species-rich grassland on Jurassic limestone. The dominant grasses are tor-grass and upright brome and flora include rock-rose, salad burnet, yellow-wort and autumn gentian.The site is open to the public. The name alludes to the 1470 Battle of Losecoat Field (also known as the Battle of Empingham). There is mention of Bloody Oaks Wood from circa 1800.

Exton and Horn is a civil parish in Rutland, England, formed in 2016 upon the merger of the historic parishes of Exton and Horn.

Shacklewell Hollow is a 3.2 hectares (7.9 acres) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest east of Empingham in Rutland, and beside the A606 road.This marshy site is in the valley of a tributary of the River Gwash. The marsh is dominated by hard rush, and there are several artificial ponds with large populations of mare's tail. There are also areas of calcareous grassland and alder wood.The site is private property with no public access. Shacklewell Hollow is also the name of a Scout campsite. It can accommodate up to 100 people in 4.5 acres (1.8 ha) of grassland and woods.

The Blisworth Clay Formation is a geological formation in England. It is part of the Great Oolite Group and was deposited in the Bathonian stage of the Middle Jurassic. The predominant lithology is mudstone with thin beds of limestone and sandstone with ironstone nodules. Towards the South-West it laterally transitions into the Forest Marble Formation.

Royal Air Force Woolfox Lodge, or more simply RAF Woolfox Lodge, is a former Royal Air Force station next to the A1 road in Rutland, UK. The airfield is split between the parishes of Empingham and Greetham. It was open from 1940 until 1966.

Tickencote Marsh is a three hectare biological Site of Special Scientific Interest west of Tickencote and Great Casterton in Rutland.This site in the valley of the River Gwash is a base-rich grazing marsh, a habitat which is becoming increasingly rare as a result of drainage and a decline in grazing. Common flora include lesser pond-sedge, marsh horsetail and jointed rush.The site is private land with no public access.

Ketton Quarries is a 115.6-hectare (286-acre) biological and geological Site of Special Scientific Interest east of Ketton in Rutland. It is a Geological Conservation Review site, and an area of 27.5 hectares is managed by the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust.The site provides an extensive exposure of the middle Jurassic Bathonian age, dating to around 167 million years ago. It is described by Natural England as "a critical site of considerable importance for lithostratigraphic and facies analysis in the Bathonian rocks of southern Britain". The older workings and spoil heaps are one of the largest areas of semi-natural limestone grassland and scrub in the county.There is access to Ketton Quarry nature reserve from Pit Lane. Some areas are working quarries with no public access.
