Belfry of Ghent

Ghent (Dutch: Gent [ɣɛnt] (listen); French: Gand [ɡɑ̃] (listen); Medieval English: Gaunt) is a city and a municipality in the Flemish Region of Belgium. It is the capital and largest city of the East Flanders province, and the third largest in the country, exceeded in size only by Brussels and Antwerp. It is a port and university city. The city originally started as a settlement at the confluence of the Rivers Scheldt and Leie and in the Late Middle Ages became one of the largest and richest cities of northern Europe, with some 50,000 people in 1300. The municipality comprises the city of Ghent proper and the surrounding suburbs of Afsnee, Desteldonk, Drongen, Gentbrugge, Ledeberg, Mariakerke, Mendonk, Oostakker, Sint-Amandsberg, Sint-Denijs-Westrem, Sint-Kruis-Winkel, Wondelgem and Zwijnaarde. With 262,219 inhabitants at the beginning of 2019, Ghent is Belgium's second largest municipality by number of inhabitants. The metropolitan area, including the outer commuter zone, covers an area of 1,205 km2 (465 sq mi) and had a total population of 560,522 as of 1 January 2018, which ranks it as the fourth most populous in Belgium. The current mayor of Ghent, Mathias De Clercq is from the liberal & democratic party Open VLD. The ten-day-long Ghent Festival (Gentse Feesten) is held every year and attended by about 1–1.5 million visitors.

Ghent City Hall is a four-sided complex in Ghent, Belgium, surrounded by the Botermarkt, the Hoogpoort, the Stadhuissteeg and the Poeljemarkt. The main wings are the late Gothic alderman's house of De Keure and the alderman's house of Gedele in the Renaissance style. The building has 51 halls.

The Stadshal (English: City Pavilion) is a large stand-alone canopy in the inner city of Ghent, Belgium. The construction was part of the city project to redevelop the squares and public spaces in Ghent's historic city centre. The Stadshal, located on the square between the Belfry, the Renaissance Town Hall and St. Nicholas' Church, received criticism upon its construction in 2012, because of its size, height and use of modern materials in the historical surroundings.

Saint Bavo's Cathedral, also known as Sint-Baafs Cathedral (Dutch: Sint Baafskathedraal), is a cathedral of the Catholic Church in Ghent, Belgium. The 89-meter-tall Gothic building is the seat of the Diocese of Ghent and is named for Saint Bavo of Ghent. It contains the well-known Ghent Altarpiece.

St. Nicholas Church (Dutch: Sint-Niklaaskerk) is one of the oldest and most prominent landmarks in Ghent, Belgium. Begun in the early 13th century as a replacement for an earlier Romanesque church, construction continued through the rest of the century in the local Scheldt Gothic style (named after the nearby river). Typical of this style is the use of blue-gray stone from the Tournai area, the single large tower above the crossing, and the slender turrets at the building's corners. Built in the old trade center of Ghent next to the bustling Korenmarkt (Wheat Market), St. Nicholas Church was popular with the guilds whose members carried out their business nearby. The guilds had their own chapels which were added to the sides of the church in the 14th and 15th centuries. The central tower, which was funded in part by the city, served as an observation post and carried the town bells until the neighboring belfry of Ghent was built. These two towers, along with the Saint Bavo Cathedral, still define the famous medieval skyline of the city center. One of the treasures of the church is its organ, produced by the famous French organ builder Aristide Cavaillé-Coll.

The Gent Jazz Festival is an international jazz festival held annually in Ghent, Belgium in mid July. It lasts two weeks and the programmation is divided in two parts: the first week, called All That Jazz., unites some of the best jazz performers in the world while the second week, named All That Jazz?, gathers groups playing music related to jazz, e.g. soul music and electronic music. The Woodrow Wilsonplein (English: Woodrow Wilson Square) is a city square in the centre of Ghent, East Flanders, Belgium. The square is colloquially called 't Zuid ("The South"), after its location just south of the historical city centre and the former Ghent-South railway station. It is named after Woodrow Wilson, the 28th president of the United States and first US president to pay an official state visit to Belgium. The Woodrow Wilsonplein is home to Ghent's largest shopping mall; Ghent South, which also serves as an office complex. On the south side of the square is the city's main administrative centre, the city library and a postal office. The Capitole, Ghent's largest theatre and event venue, is separated from the Woodrow Wilsonplein by the Graaf van Vlaanderenplein. The square borders the north side of the Zuidpark ("South Park"; not to be confused with the American adult animated series of the same name). In May 2020, the square's zebra crossing was transformed into a "rainbow crossing" in order to create awareness and acceptance of LGBT diversity.

The Vrijdagmarkt (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈvrɛidɑxmɑr(ə)kt]; "Friday Market") is a city square in the historic centre of Ghent, East Flanders, Belgium. It is named after the weekly tradition to stage a market every Friday morning. As one of the oldest squares in Ghent, it played an important role in the city's history.

The Korenmarkt (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈkoːrəmɑr(ə)kt]; "Wheat Market") is a city square in the historic centre of Ghent, East Flanders, Belgium. Located between the Leie river and St. Nicholas' Church, it is one of the city's most important and famous tourist locations. The square is surrounded with several historic buildings, which today house bars, restaurants and terraces. It is a pivotal location of the annual Gentse Feesten cultural festival.

The Diocese of Ghent (Latin: Dioecesis Gandavensis) is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory or diocese of the Catholic Church in Belgium. It is a suffragan in the ecclesiastical province of the metropolitan Archdiocese of Mechelen-Brussels. The patron of the diocese is Saint Bavo of Ghent.
