Volterra

San Pietro in Selci is an ancient church in Volterra, Italy. A church was initially established by Guiscard, Marquis of Tuscany in 1005, and part of the building we see today dates to the 12th century, but sports today a later Baroque facade with statues in tufa of San Lino and Saint Giusto by Leonardo Ricciarelli. The interior contains a painting of a Madonna with Child and Saints by the 15th century Master of Volterra, two canvases by Niccolò Circignani depicting respectively an Annunciation and the Glory of the Virgin, a canvas by Francesco Brini depicting an Immaculate Conception and a painted stucco with a Madonna and Child.

The Fortezza Medicea is an occasional restaurant in Volterra, Italy. It is housed in the town's Renaissance-era fortress (Fortezza Medicea, lit. 'Medician fortress'), built 1474, which is a high-security prison for criminals serving no less than seven years.In 2006, the prison's administration began operating a restaurant within the prison, using inmates as staff, as a rehabilitation scheme. The project was successful in attracting clients and the attention of the international press. Despite the inconveniences of dining in the Fortezza – clients must pass a background check and several checkpoints, and all cutlery is plastic – tables, as of 2007, had to be booked weeks in advance.

The Fortezza Medicea (Medici Fortress) of Volterra is built on the highest point of the hill overlooking the town. Despite its name, the origins of the fortress predate the ascendancy of the Medicis. The southern part was constructed at the command of the Duke of Athens who had been appointed governor of Florence in 1342. For more than a century the once friendly relationship between Volterra and Florence became increasingly complicated and at times confrontational: the discovery locally of valuable Alum in the 1470s focused the interest of Florence, and in 1472 7,000 Florentine troops besieged and then sacked the town, after which Florentine control over Volterra and the alum mines was no longer in doubt. The fortress was upgraded by another Florentine ruler, Lorenzo the magnificent who was also responsible for the construction of the adjacent newer fortress in 1474.The two fortresses are linked by a stone “curtain wall”. The fortress is used currently as a medium security prison and tourist visits to the interior are restricted to a few days and a small portion of the buildings. A notable exception is that part used as a restaurant operated by appropriately supervised prisoners.

Sant'Agostino is a 13th-century, Roman Catholic church and former monastery located on Piazza XX di Settembre, in the historic center of Volterra, Italy. The church facade is just northwest of the Biblioteca Guarnacci and Museo Etrusco Guarnacci. The church since 2017 was restructured to house the Museo Diocesano di Arte Sacra (Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art) for the town of Volterra. Construction of this church and its adjacent Augustinian monastery was prompted when the started when the order arrived with a putative relic of a spine from the crown of thorns imposed by Jesus during his passion. The Augustinians were banished in 1785 by the Granduke of Tuscany, Pietro Leopoldo, although the prior and a small number of monks stayed in town until 1807. The adjacent convent was supposedly built prior to 1349, along with the Santi Giacomo e Giovanni hospital, commissioned by Ottaviano Strenna and using designs by Filippo Belforti. Initially, the church had a single nave, but by 1728 it had the additional aisles added.

Sant'Andrea Apostolo (St Andrew the Apostle) is a Baroque-style, Roman Catholic church and monastery located just outside the walls of Volterra in the province of Pisa, region of Tuscany, Italy. The complex now serves as a seminary.

San Michele Arcangelo (St Michele Archangel) is a 13th-century Romanesque-style, Roman Catholic church in Volterra, region of Tuscany, Italy. The church is across the street from the Medieval Palazzo Maffei-Guarnacci (Casa Torre Toscano).

The Palazzo Inghirami is an aristocratic palace with a main façade on Via Marchesi, on the corner with Piazza Martire della Liberta, in Volterra, in the province of Pisa, region of Tuscany, Italy. The main façade of the palace was commissioned in the early 17th-century by Jacopo Inghirami, Admiral of the Grand-Duchy of Tuscany.

The Palazzo dei Priori is a Gothic-style monumental civic building in the center of the town of Volterra, located on the Piazza dei Priori, also known as Piazza Maggiore. The imposing 13th-century stone building once the office of appointed town magistrates, still has offices of the local commune, including the communal council, for Volterra, province of Pisa, region of Tuscany, Italy.

San Girolamo is a Renaissance-style Roman Catholic church located Via Annibale Cinci #16, just outside the old walled city of Volterra, region of Tuscany, Italy. The church and attached Franciscan convent, a complex also known as of San Girolamo al Vellosoli, were designed by Michelozzo and construction was completed by about 1445. Some have questioned the attribution and even suggested that it was designed another famous Florentine architect, Lorenzo Ghiberti. Among it patrons was the Duke Cosimo de' Medici from Florence. The long portico in front of the church has similarities to another Michelozzo work, the church and convent of Bosco ai Frati in San Piero a Sieve. The facade has a long asymmetric portico leading to two chapels each contains terracotta reliefs by Giovanni della Robbia depicting St Francis of Assisi consigns the third order to St Louis of France and St Elizabeth of Hungary and the Last Judgement (1501). The main altar is flanked by two paintings: an Annunciation by Benvenuto di Giovanni, and a Madonna and Child with Saints by Domenico di Michelino. An interior chapel has an Immaculate Conception by Santi di Tito. The glazed terracotta statues of St Jerome and St Francis are attributed to Giovanni Gonmelli, also called il Cieco di Gambassi (blind man of Gambassi). The adjacent convent is now a youth hostel and hotel.

Volterra Cathedral (Italian: Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta, or Duomo di Volterra) is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Volterra, Italy, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It is the seat of the bishop of Volterra.

The Baptistery of San Giovanni an octagonal thirteenth-century religious building standing just in front of the Duomo of Volterra, in the center of the city. It was supposedly set up in the seventh century at the site of a Roman temple dedicated to Sun worship. The façade is decorated with horizontal bands of white and dark green marble. The Romanesque Portal has been attributed to a follower of Nicola Pisano. The sixteenth-century altar inside has been assigned to Balsimelli da Settignano, using a design by Mino da Fiesole. It has a painting (partially damaged during World War Two of the Assumption of the Virgin by Niccolò Circignani. Beside that altar is a marble font (1502) is by Andrea Sansovino. The Ciborium (1471) was completed by Mino da Fiesole. The baptismal font (1759) by Giovanni Vaccà. Above it rises a statue of St John the Baptist (1771) by Giovanni Antonio Cybei. The holy water receptacle is an ancient Roman sarcophagus.
