Pickwell

Somerby is a village and civil parish in the Melton district, in the county of Leicestershire, England. It is 5+1⁄2 miles (8.9 km) south of Melton Mowbray. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 812. Somerby is a small country village containing a parish church (All Saints), a primary school, a Doctor's surgery, a pub, a small shop/post office, and a large Equestrian Centre. The population is close to 500. It is the largest village in the parish of Somerby and is located in East Leicestershire close to the border with Rutland; the parish also includes the settlements of Burrough on the Hill, Leesthorpe and Pickwell. The surrounding countryside is very attractive and is often referred to as 'High Leicestershire'. Much of the Parish is several hundred feet above sea level and there are often superb views to be found. Although predominantly a rural community there are a significant number of successful business enterprises in the local area. During World War II, the village was used as a base station and testing ground for Operation Market Garden, the airborne attack on Arnhem. It was in the parish of Somerby (but the village of Burrough on the Hill) that the surgeon William Cheselden was born.

East Goscote Hundred was a hundred of Leicestershire, that arose from the division of the ancient Goscote hundred (also known as a Wapentake) into two. It covered the eastern part of today's Charnwood district, along with the northern part of Harborough District, and extended south-east to meet Rutland. The hundred was created by the sub-division of the Goscote hundred in 1346. A parish in the East Goscote Hundred was Prestwould (later named Prestwold).Today, the name of the East Goscote Hundred lives on in the 20th century village of East Goscote.

Owston Abbey was an Augustinian monastery in Owston, Leicestershire, England.

Owston and Newbold is a civil parish, 5 miles (8 km) west of Oakham in the Harborough district, in the county of Leicestershire, England. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census (including Marefield) was 112.The Parish Church of St Andrew, Owston, began as an Augustinian monastic foundation before 1161, and substantial buildings stood around the site of the current church. Owston Abbey was never prosperous, and when dissolved at the reformation had 6 canons. The parish retained a part of the Abbey Church for its use when the rest was demolished, resulting in an unusually proportioned building, with its doorway through the tower on the south side. The relationship between the current church and former monastic arrangements remains uncertain.

Knossington is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Knossington and Cold Overton, in the Melton borough of Leicestershire, England. It is located close to the border with Rutland, around 4 miles (6.4 km) west of Oakham. The population of the civil parish of "Knossington and Cold Overton" at the 2011 census was 316. It has been a designated conservation area since 1977.

Burrough Hill is an Iron Age hillfort in Burrough on the Hill, 7 miles (11 km) south of Melton Mowbray in the English county of Leicestershire. Situated on a promontory about 210 metres (690 ft) above sea level, the site commands views over the surrounding countryside for miles around. There has been human activity in the area since at least the Mesolithic, and the hillfort was founded in the early Iron Age. In the medieval period, after the hillfort was abandoned, the hill was used as farmland. This ended in the 17th century when the parish the hill was in was enclosed. Traces of ridge and furrow show where the medieval fields were ploughed. Since the 1930s the site has been the subject of archaeological investigations and renewed excavations under the auspices of the University of Leicester began in 2010. Part of Burrough Hill Country Park and open to the public, the hillfort is protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument. According to archaeologist Dr Jeremy Taylor "sites like Burrough Hill were the nearest thing we have to a town before places like Leicester ever existed".

Cold Overton Hall is a country house in the village of Cold Overton, Leicestershire, England. Built c. 1664 for John St John, it is a Grade I listed building. The hall is built in three storeys plus attics with a 5 bay frontage. It is constructed of ironstone with limestone dressings and a hipped Swithland slate roof. The west front has a two-storey flat roofed porch projecting from a pedimented 3 bay centre.

Cold Overton is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Knossington and Cold Overton, in the Melton district of Leicestershire, England. It is close to the border with Rutland, and approximately 3 miles (5 km) west from the market and county town of Oakham, and 1.5 miles (2.4 km) south-west of the A606 road. In 1931 the parish had a population of 133.

Rutland and Melton is a county constituency spanning Leicestershire and Rutland, represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom since 2019 by Alicia Kearns, a Conservative. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first-past-the-post system of election. The constituency was first contested in 1983. It has been considered a safe Conservative seat since its creation, continuing to elect a Conservative with a significant margin even with the 1997 national swing towards the Labour Party. Sir Alan Duncan did not stand for re-election in 2019.The seat is due to be abolished for the next general election.

Burton and Dalby is a civil parish in the Melton district of Leicestershire, England, to the south of Melton Mowbray. It covers the villages of Burton Lazars, Great Dalby and Little Dalby and according to the 2001 census had a population of 895, Increasing to 985 at the 2011 census.

Burrough on the Hill Manor is an 18th-century brick-built house in the village of Burrough on the Hill, in the civil parish of Somerby, in the Melton district, in the county of Leicestershire, England. It is a grade II listed building.

Burrough-on-the Hill is a small village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Somerby, in the Melton district, in the county of Leicestershire, England. It is 12 miles (19 km) north east of Leicester. The parish church is St. Mary the Virgin. Burrough Hill is an Iron Age hill fort near the village and is in an 86-acre (35 ha) country park of the same name. The hillfort stands on a promontory around 660 feet (200 m) above sea level, 7 miles (11 km) south of the modern settlement of Melton Mowbray. In 1931 the parish had a population of 214. The village's name means 'fortification on the hill'. Though later forms of Old English show that it could mean 'the earthen fortification on the hill'.On 1 April 1936 the parish was abolished and merged with Somerby.The village shared John O' Gaunt railway station with the neighbouring village of Twyford. The station is adjacent to a 14-arch viaduct. Trains used to go north to Melton Mowbray, and south to Leicester and Market Harborough, but the line was closed in the 1960s. There is a local bus service to Melton Mowbray and Oakham. 10th Battalion, the Parachute Regiment During preparations for Operation Market Garden the 10th Battalion, the Parachute Regiment were billeted in and around Somerby before setting off to join the action the day after the outbreak of the Battle of Arnhem on 18 September 1944. The 10th Battalion, The Parachute Regiment Memorial at Burrough on the Hill was completed and unveiled in September 2019 by Friends of the Tenth. A memorial garden has also been created looking over and across to the valley where the battalion practised parachute drops and training exercises in 1944.
