Columbia Heights is a neighborhood in Northwest Washington, D.C., United States. It has diverse demographics, the DC USA shopping mall and many restaurants, BloomBars, Meridian Hill/Malcolm X Park, Howard University, Banneker Recreation Center, and All Souls Church.Developed as a Washington suburb after the American Civil War, growth accelerated in the early 1900s. The extension of the DC streetcar system in 1914 made the neighborhood a popular place to live among federal workers. In the 1940s, the designation of Cardozo High School as a "colored" school resulted in a demographic shift and the neighborhood became predominantly African-American. The 1968 Washington, D.C., riots devastated the area and turmoil in the 1970s and 1980s followed. Beginning in the late 1990s, the addition of a Washington Metro station and other initiatives led to the redevelopment of the neighborhood. Columbia Heights has been listed as one of D.C.'s neighborhoods where home sellers get more than asking price. Unlike some gentrified neighborhoods in the city, Columbia Heights has not become homogeneous: "white, Asian, black and Latino residents each make up at least 10% of the population—and no group constitutes a majority." It has been described as "a perfect little microcosm of D.C." Housing includes high-priced condominiums and townhouses, as well as public and middle-income housing, and million-dollar homes.

The Blanche K. Bruce School was an all-black school and community center during the Jim Crow era in the United States. In July 1898, the District of Columbia public school trustees ordered that a then new public school building on Marshall Street be named the Bruce School in his honor. The Bruce School building was designed by architect William M. Poindexter in Renaissance Revival style of red brick with stone and pressed metal trim, with two floors of four rooms each. In 1927, a Colonial Revival style eight-room annex was constructed, designed by architect Albert L. Harris. (Marshall Street later became Kenyon Street.) In 1973, the Bruce School was closed and combined with the James Monroe Elementary School to become the nearby Bruce-Monroe Elementary School. The Bruce School building became the charter Caesar Chavez Prep Middle School in 2009, named for the Mexican-American labor organizer Cesar Chavez. After the teachers unionized in 2017, the school was closed by the Chavez Schools in 2019.The building was designated a D.C. historic site on November 20, 2014, and added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 31, 2015.

BloomBars is a not-for-profit community arts organization based in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Washington, D.C. Launched in June 2008 out of a former print shop at 3222 11th Street NW by John Chambers, the space currently hosts dance and wellness classes, film screenings, an open mic night, art exhibitions/performances and facilitates an artist residency program.

The Alden, Babcock and Calvert Apartments, also known as the Warner Apartments, are three adjoining historic apartment buildings located at 2620-A, 2520-B and 2620-C, respectively, on 13th St., NW, in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Washington, D.C. They were designed and built in 1904 by Edgar S. Kennedy and Isaac N Davis of Kennedy and Davis in the redbrick Colonial Revival-style of architecture.On May 25, 1990, they were added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The National Home for Destitute Colored Women and Children, later known as the Merriweather Home for Children, was a relief association in the Pleasant Plains neighborhood of Washington, D.C. Founded in 1863 to house and educate formerly enslaved women and children who fled to Washington during the American Civil War, the organization would go on to operate for more than a century, becoming the only orphanage for African American children in the city by the 1950s. In 2022, the National Home's former building at 733 Euclid Street N.W. was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Pleasant Plains is a neighborhood in central Washington, D.C. largely occupied by Howard University. For this reason it is also sometimes referred to as Howard Town or, less frequently, Howard Village. It is situated in the Northwest quadrant of the city and bordered by 2nd Street, and McMillan Reservoir to the east; Florida Avenue and Barry Place to the south; Sherman Avenue to the west; and Harvard Street to the north. It is flanked on the eastern side by the Washington Veteran Affairs Medical Center and Washington Hospital Center, and by the Columbia Heights and Park View neighborhoods on the west and north sides. Pleasant Plains, Howard University notwithstanding, is a residential neighborhood. A large portion of its residents are Howard affiliates, either students or employees. One of its major community anchors is the Banneker Recreation Center on Georgia Avenue, which reopened in July 2007 after a year of renovations. The adjacent Benjamin Banneker Academic High School has ranked among the 100 best public schools in the United States.Pleasant Plains is in Ward 1.

Cardozo Education Campus, formerly Cardozo Senior High School and Central High School, is a combined middle and high school at 13th and Clifton Street in northwest Washington, D.C., United States, in the Columbia Heights neighborhood. Cardozo is operated by District of Columbia Public Schools. The school is named after clergyman, politician and educator Francis Lewis Cardozo.

Burr Gymnasium is a multi-purpose arena in Washington, D.C., which opened in 1963. It is home to the Howard University Bison men's and women's basketball teams and women's volleyball team. It is named after John Harold Burr Jr., chairman of the physical education department from 1923 to 1958. It has a seating capacity of 2,700.The Burr Gymnasium Pool located in the gym is home to the men's and women's swimming and diving teams.

Two Men Reading, is a public artwork by an unknown artist, located over the entrance of 601 Fairmont Street, N.W. on the Howard University campus in Washington, D.C., United States. Two Men Reading was originally surveyed as part of the Smithsonian's Save Outdoor Sculpture! survey in 1993.

The Tenth Precinct Station House is an historic structure located in the Park View neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The building was designed by the architectural firm of A.B. Mullett & Co. and was completed in 1905. It was constructed for Metropolitan Police Department.It has been listed on the District of Columbia Inventory of Historic Sites and the National Register of Historic Places since 1986.

Olympia Apartments is an historic structure located in the Columbia Heights neighborhood in Washington, D.C.'s Northwest Quadrant. Albert B. Morgan designed this apartment building and it was completed in 1898. The official District of Columbia Inventory of Historic Sites states "Stylistically, the Olympia is also notable as a transitional mixture of Victorian and Beaux Arts design, reflecting the period from about 1895 to 1905 when monumental classicism returned to favor in Washington." The building is the last remaining of the first phase of apartment blocks that were constructed near the 14th Street streetcar line. They formed Washington's first apartment corridor. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.
