Springwell Estate

The Bowes Railway, built by George Stephenson in 1826, is the world's only operational preserved standard gauge cable railway system. It was built to transport coal from pits in Durham to boats on the River Tyne. The site is a scheduled monument. The railway is open every week on Thursday, Friday and Saturday (Easter til October) as well as on a number of event days throughout the year.

Springwell Village is a village in the City of Sunderland, bordering Gateshead, approximately 7.6 miles (12.2 km) from Newcastle upon Tyne, 9 miles (14 km) from Sunderland, and 13 miles (21 km) from Durham. In 2011, Census data for the City of Sunderland ward of Washington West recorded a total population of 11,833.The village is home to one church, Springwell Village Methodist Church, as well as three shops and two local pubs – The Guidepost in the centre of the village, and The Ship on the outskirts. The area surrounding the village consists mainly of farmland, as well as land used for equestrian activities.

Gateshead East and Washington West was a parliamentary constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It elected a Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post electoral system.

Albany is a suburb of Washington in the City of Sunderland in Tyne and Wear, historically part of County Durham. It is in the north of the town. The village is also relatively close to The Galleries Shopping Centre, Washington. Washington F.C. play their home games at Albany Park, but the football ground is often mistaken for being a part of Concord Village, which is just east of Albany.

Blackfell is a village located in the new town of Washington, Tyne and Wear in England.Construction of the village began in the 1960s, and was completed over several years. The original prefabricated maisonettes in the east side of the village have now been replaced with new-build homes. The village was built near the site of Blackfell Army Camp (no longer in existence) also covering Blackfell Caravan and Camping Club, and the old coal pit in Albany (now a small museum). The village is between the A182, A1231 and the A194. Despite this, local bus services link the village with others in Washington. When Washington New Town was constructed, each village was given its own industrial estate to employ the local workforce. A recently constructed B&Q (which was built around a Dickens DIY store, which was itself built on the RCA Record factory ground) dominates the Armstrong Industrial Estate closest to Blackfell.

Heworth () is a residential area in Gateshead, located around 3 miles (4.8 km) from Newcastle upon Tyne, 11 miles (18 km) from Sunderland, and 17 miles (27 km) from Durham. In 2011, Census data for the Gateshead Metropolitan Borough Council ward of Heworth and Pelaw recorded a total population of 9,100.

Leam Lane Estate is a housing estate in Gateshead, built in the 1950s and early 60's. Originally made up solely of council-built accommodation and housing association houses. Most of the properties are now privately owned. The estate is located around 4 miles (6.4 km) from Newcastle upon Tyne, 10.5 miles (16.9 km) from Sunderland, and 15.5 miles (24.9 km) from Durham. In 2011, Census data for the Gateshead Metropolitan Borough Council ward of Wardley and Leam Lane recorded a total population of 8,327.The estate's main shopping area, Fewster Square, provides a number of amenities, including independent shops, two supermarkets, post office, and medical centre. The nearby Oliver Henderson Park includes a play area, lake, skateboard park and a bowling green, as well as a large grass football pitch.Leam Lane Estate is bordered by Heworth, Whitehills Estate, Springwell Estate, Wardley and Windy Nook. Most of the estate is in the NE10 postcode, with NE9 covering the upper side of Leam Lane, at the border with Springwell.

Eighton Banks is a small village in the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead, which is located around 4.5 miles (7 km) from Newcastle upon Tyne. The village is bordered by Birtley, Harlow Green and Wrekenton, and is located near to Antony Gormley's Angel of the North sculpture at Low Eighton.

Washington and Gateshead South is a constituency of the House of Commons in the UK Parliament. The constituency was created by the 2023 Periodic Review of Westminster constituencies, and was first contested at the 2024 general election.

Wrekenton is a residential area in Gateshead, located around 3.5 miles (5.6 km) from Newcastle upon Tyne, 11 miles (18 km) from Sunderland, and 14 miles (23 km) from Durham. In 2011, Census data for the Gateshead Metropolitan Borough Council ward of High Fell recorded a total population of 6,110.Wrekenton is bordered by Beacon Lough to the north, Harlow Green to the west, and Eighton Banks to the south. A large part of Wrekenton consists of a council estate, known as Springwell Estate. This is distinct from Springwell Village, which is located a short distance across the border, within the City of Sunderland.

Heworth Grange School (formerly Heworth Grange Comprehensive School) is a coeducational secondary school located in Felling (near Gateshead) in Tyne and Wear, England.

Thomas Hepburn Community Academy (formerly Thomas Hepburn Community School) was a coeducational secondary school with academy status, located in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, England. The school served about 700 pupils aged 11–16.
