Soham Abbey

Soham ( SOH-əm) is a town and civil parish in the district of East Cambridgeshire, in Cambridgeshire, England, just off the A142 between Ely and Newmarket. Its population was 12,336 at the 2021 census.

Soham Village College is a secondary school with academy status located in Soham, Cambridgeshire, England. It has around 1,400 pupils, aged 11 to 16. Although its wide catchment area does not include Ely, some pupils from there and its neighbouring villages attend the college. It is split between two adjacent sites: Beechurst, formerly a large house, and Lodeside, built more recently.

Soham Town Rangers Football Club is an English football club based in Soham, Cambridgeshire. The club are currently members of the Eastern Counties League Premier Division and play at Julius Martin Lane.

The Soham rail disaster occurred on 2 June 1944, during the Second World War, when a fire developed on the leading wagon of a heavy ammunition train. The wagon contained a quantity of high explosive bombs. The train crew had detached the wagon from the rest of the train and were drawing it away when the cargo exploded. The fireman of the train and the signalman at Soham signalbox were killed and several other people injured. The driver, Benjamin Gimbert, and fireman, James Nightall, were both awarded the George Cross for preventing further damage which would have occurred if the rest of the train had exploded.

Soham railway station is a station on the Ipswich–Ely line, serving the town of Soham in Cambridgeshire. The original station operated between 1879 and 1965. It was reopened in 2021.

Burwell Tramway was a 2.5 miles (4.0 km) standard gauge industrial tramway which ran from the Ely-Newmarket line, just south of the Soham-Wicken A1123 road (52.3111°N 0.3440°E / 52.3111; 0.3440), to industries just north of Burwell Lode (52.2909°N 0.3089°E / 52.2909; 0.3089). As well as serving Fisons chemical (fertilizer) works, the line also served the adjacent Burwell Brick Company brickworks, a cement works, and local fruit growers and farmers.

Soham Wet Horse Fen is a 33.8-hectare (84-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest east of Soham in Cambridgeshire. A 3.6-hectare (8.9-acre) field in the north-west corner is managed by the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire as Soham Meadow.This site is neutral grassland with diverse fauna and flora, including uncommon ones. Wetter areas have herbs such as green-winged orchids and adder’s tongue fern, and there are cowslips and stemless thistles in drier parts. snipe breed in wet pastures.There is access to Soham Meadow by a footpath from Soham.

Wicken is a small village on the edge of The Fens near Soham in East Cambridgeshire, ten miles north east of Cambridge and five miles south of Ely. It is the site of Wicken Fen National Nature Reserve.

Fordham is a village in rural Cambridgeshire, England. Fordham is part of the East Cambridgeshire district. It is four miles north of Newmarket, as well as being close to the settlements of Soham, Burwell, Isleham, Mildenhall and Chippenham.

Fordham railway station is a disused railway station that served the village of Fordham, Cambridgeshire. Opened in 1879, the station formed the junction between the Cambridge to Mildenhall railway and the Ipswich to Ely Line in England. The Mildenhall branch closed to passengers in 1962 followed by the station in 1965.

Delph Bridge Drain is a 0.15-hectare (0.37-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest north-west of Soham in Cambridgeshire.This site has the only known British population of fen ragwort, which was previously believed to have become extinct in the UK in 1857, due to habitat destruction. It was re-discovered in 1971 when dormant seeds probably germinated following excavation of the drain.The site is a short stretch of ditch next to the A142 road between Soham and Ely.

Fordham Priory was a Gilbertine priory in Fordham, Cambridgeshire, England. It was established in 1227 and was dissolved in 1540. Fordham Abbey, a Grade II listed Georgian manor house was built on the site in the eighteenth century.
