The City of Durham was, from 1974 to 2009, a non-metropolitan district of County Durham in North East England, with the status of borough and city.

Sherburn House is a hamlet in County Durham, England. It is situated approximately 2 miles (3 km) south-east of Durham between Sherburn and Shincliffe Village. It is in the civil parish of Shincliffe. Sherburn House is the location of Sherburn Hospital.

Sherburn House railway station served the hamlet of Sherburn House and the village of Sherburn, County Durham in England from 1837 to 1931 on the Durham to Sunderland Line.

Whitwell House is a place in County Durham, in England situated a few miles to the south-east of Durham. It now consists of the hamlet of Whitwell Grange, but was from 1836 was the site of the village of Whitwell Colliery. The village declined following the closure of the colliery in 1875 and was described as 'almost deserted' by 1894. Whitwell House was also an extra-parochial chapelry, and from 1858 a civil parish until its incorporation with Shincliffe. The chapelry was closely associated with the nearby Sherburn Hospital.

Moor End is a place in County Durham, England. It is situated immediately to the east of Durham, close to Gilesgate Moor and Carrville. It is situated within the parish of Belmont and as Belmont and Carrville have expanded is now largely indistinct from its neighbours.

Sherburn Hill is a Site of Special Scientific Interest in County Durham, England. It lies just south of the road between the villages of Sherburn and Sherburn Hill, some 5.5 km east of Durham city. A disused quarry occupies part of the site. The site supports an area of semi-natural magnesian limestone grassland, in which blue moor-grass, Sesleria albicans, is the dominant species. Glaucous sedge, Carex flacca, quaking grass, Briza media, meadow oat-grass, Avenula pratensis, rock-rose, Helianthemum nummularium, and fragrant orchid, Gymnadenia conopsea, are common, while sea plantain, Plantago maritima, is locally abundant in the grassland at the edge of limestone spoil heaps. The site has one of the largest populations of the scarce Durham Argus butterfly, Aricia artaxerxes salmacis, and the rare cistus forester moth, Adscita geryon, has also been recorded.
