It is the major provider of vocational post-16 education and training in the former district of Derwentside. The Principal and Chief Executive is Chris Todd, who took over from Karen Redhead in 2019.The college's inspection report in 1997 summarised its history as: "Derwentside College was established as a tertiary college in 1986 following the decision of Durham Local Education Authority (LEA) to bring together the activities of Consett Technical College and the sixth forms of five local schools".

Benfieldside is a parish in County Durham, in England. Although not a village in its own right (ecclesiastically it incorporates Shotley Bridge, Bridgehill and much of Blackhill), it is signposted and locally known. From a governance point of view it is a ward of Consett with a population taken at the 2011 census of 6,637. The name 'Benfieldside' survives in Benfieldside Road, a school of that name, the local tennis club and the church. Its post office no longer exists, though one remains in the village of Shotley Bridge. The Parish Church is dedicated to St. Cuthbert and is situated on Church Bank. The area is situated directly to the north of Consett, to which it is effectively attached.

It was once the heart of Britain's swordmaking industry. The village is 16 miles (26 km) southwest of Newcastle upon Tyne.

It is a listed building with grade II.The house was built by Jonathan Richardson, the founder of Shotley Bridge Spa, the driving force in the town’s rapid growth in the mid 19th century.The Richardson family sold Shotley Park to the Priestman family in the late 19th century following the death of John Richardson on Christmas Day 1871.Following wartime use during WW2, the main property fell into institutional use before being gifted to Barnardo's in the 1950s. Since the late 1980s the main building has been used as a residential care home for the elderly.
