Sesswick Halt railway station

Sesswick is a community in Wrexham County Borough, Wales. It lies south-east of Wrexham near Marchwiel. The population of the community at the 2011 Census was 609. The area was historically part of Denbighshire, where it was one of the townships of the parish of Bangor Monachorum (Bangor-on-Dee). The neighbouring township of Royton was incorporated in it in 1935. The name Sesswick, recorded as Sesewyke in 1286, is one of the names indicating an early English presence in this part of north-east Wales; it is possibly derived from the Old English personal name "Seassa", along with -wic, meaning "settlement". However, the Wrexham historian Alfred Neobard Palmer, noting that the name was recorded as Chespric (actually Chespuic) in the Domesday of Cheshire, speculated that it may have come from "Chadswick" in reference to land in the township being owned by St. Chad, the first bishop of Mercia.The community's only village is Cross Lanes: it also includes several small hamlets (though no settlement itself having the name of Sesswick). In the 2001 census Sesswick had a total population of 591 in 236 households.The area gave its name to a rural station, Sesswick Halt railway station, on the former Cambrian Railways' Wrexham and Ellesmere Railway; the line and station closed in 1962.

Pickhill Halt railway station was a station in Sesswick, Wrexham, Wales. The station was opened on 30 May 1938 and closed in 1962. The opening of the halt coincided with the building of a milk factory by Cadbury Brothers, who bought the greenfield site at auction from Mrs Randles, the 92-year old owner of the Brynafon Estate, in March 1937. The station was a single platform of wooden construction, and immediately south of the station under the adjacent road bridge was the gated siding into the factory. After the closure of the railway to passengers the line from Wrexham to Pickhill remained in use for the milk trains, while the line south of the siding was lifted. Although in 1971 the milk factory (known as Maelor Creamery) moved away from rail transport, it continued under various owners until it closed in March 2014.

Marchwiel power station was an electricity generating plant providing a central source of electric current for the Marchwiel Trading Estate near Wrexham. It was under state ownership and operation from 1950 to 1960.

Pentre Maelor is a housing estate near Wrexham Industrial Estate in Wrexham County Borough, Wales. In the 2011 census, its built-up area had a population of 305.The village is part of the community of Abenbury, and forms the majority of the community's population. The River Clywedog flows just south of the village. Pentre Maelor was established in 1947 as a housing estate to provide accommodation for workers from factories in the area. The village has retained its original layout, which consists of a rectangular central lock and connected 'wings' of houses, each of which is built around a green space. One of those green spaces located in the centre of the estate, is an Owain Glyndwr Field protected by Fields in Trust, and operated by Wrexham County Borough Council.

Abenbury is a community in Wrexham County Borough, Wales. It is situated south-east of Wrexham city and includes the village of Pentre Maelor and part of the Wrexham Industrial Estate. The ancient parish of Wrexham included the townships of Abenbury Fawr (or "Big Abenbury") and Abenbury Fechan (or "Little Abenbury"). The township of Abenbury Fechan was one of several exclaves of Flintshire and was only transferred to Denbighshire in 1884. The historian A. N. Palmer argued that the name Abenbury probably had a compound Welsh and English origin, noting there was a farm called "Coed Aben" in the township.The civil parish of Abenbury was created in 1935 from parts of the old townships of Abenbury Fawr and Erlas: it was the basis of the community of Abenbury when this was created under the Local Government Act 1972.At the 2001 census, the community had a population of 718 in 277 households, the population increasing to 1,678 at the 2011 Census. The majority of residents live in the village of Pentre Maelor, which was originally built in 1947 to house workers from nearby factories. The community also includes a large rural area and the Llwyn Onn estate on the outskirts of Wrexham, all of which are governed by Abenbury Community Council (Welsh: Cyngor Cymuned Abenbury).

Bangor Bridge (also known as the Bangor-on-Dee Bridge) is a Grade I listed bridge crossing the River Dee in Bangor-on-Dee, Wrexham County Borough, Wales. It is situated on the community boundary between Bangor-is-y-Coed and Sesswick. Located to the west of Bangor-on-Dee, it connects the village's high street and the A525 road bypass. The narrow bridge is a one-way traffic bridge, west to east, and is downstream (north) of the Bangor by-pass bridge.

St Dunawd's Church, is in the village of Bangor-on-Dee, Wrexham County Borough, Wales. It is designated by Cadw as a Grade II* listed building. The church is an active Anglican church in the deanery of Dee Valley, the archdeaconry of Wrexham and the diocese of St Asaph.

Bangor-on-Dee (Welsh: Bangor-is-y-coed or standardised Bangor Is-coed) is a village and community in Wrexham County Borough, Wales, on the banks of the River Dee. Until 1974 it was in the exclave of Flintshire known as the Maelor Saesneg, and from 1974 to 1996 in the county of Clwyd. The community had a population of 1,110 at the 2011 Census.

The Maelor is an area of north-east Wales along the border with England. It is now entirely part of Wrexham County Borough. The name Maelor is an old Welsh word: it can be translated as "land of the prince", from mael ("prince") and llawr ("low ground", "region").

Marchwiel railway station was a station in Marchwiel, Wrexham, Wales. The station was opened on 2 November 1895 and closed on 10 September 1962.
