Stanner Rocks is a rounded hill, steep in parts, which lies close to the Wales border with England between Walton and Kington. A superb collection of wild plants can be found here. Where it faces south, warm sunshine and drying winds create an ideal environment for plants which are more likely to be seen around the Mediterranean. The most famous of Stanner Rocks’ specialties is the pretty and elusive Radnor Lily, having small, starry yellow flowers. The Stanner-Hanter Complex refers to the set of rocks which outcrop at Stanner Hill and the nearby Hanter Hill and Worsel Wood and which have long been considered to be the oldest in Wales, having been dated to around 700 million years BP using the rubidium-strontium dating method. They comprise gabbro, diorite and granite. Little modern research has been undertaken on the Complex. The rocks have been variously described as a hypersthene trap (Murchison 1867); an Archean ridge (Calloway1879); a Carboniferous laccolith (Raw 1904); a Tertiary igneous complex (Watts 1906); and a Carboniferous intrusion (Pocock & Whitehead 1935). Holgate & Knight-Hallowes (1941) suggested a Precambrian origin based on the occurrence of dolerite clasts associated with Longmyndian sediments in a nearby quarry. Much of the confusion must relate to the fault-bounded nature of the Complex which gives no direct stratigraphic control of its age of formation. In the late 1970s the general acceptance of the theory of plate tectonics resulted in a re-investigation of the Precambrian and Paleozoic igneous rocks of southern Britain. Thorpe et al. (1984) made the earliest developments by identifying the calc-alkaline nature of many of these exposures and interpreting this evidence as the product of Precambrian subduction. The Stanner - Hanter Complex was not part of this study, perhaps because of its considerable alteration or possibly owing to the limited range of rock types. In 1980 the publication of a Rb/Sr isotopic age of 702 ± 4 Ma by Pachett et al. confirmed the Neoproterozoic age of the Complex whilst establishing it as the oldest dated rock sequence in southern Britain. More extensive dating of Avalonian rocks both in southern Britain and Maritime Canada has allowed Avalonian subduction to be refined into several stages. Gibbons & Hõrak (1996) grouped the Stanner-Hanter Complex with the Malverns Complex placing both within Avalonian Event 1, the early arc-construction phase, which has been dated at 677Ma. Implicit in this interpretation, however, is the assumption that the Stanner-Hanter rocks have a calc-alkaline composition. Slightly older dolerites and gabbros in the Avalonian of Newfoundland have a more primitive oceanic affinity related to the rifting and formation of primitive oceanic crust.

Walton is a village in Powys, Wales, 1,300 yards (1,200 m) west from the border with Herefordshire, England. The village is 3 miles (5 km) east from New Radnor on the A44 road. A minor road connects to Old Radnor. At 500 yards (460 m) south from Walton is Gore quarry, a tarmac facility.

St Stephen's Church is a Church of England parish church in Old Radnor, Powys, Wales. It was constructed in the 15th century in perpendicular gothic style on the site of a 6th-century church. It is a grade I listed building.The organ is listed as being of exceptional interest. The instrument itself is mainly 19th century; however, its elaborate wooden case is very early.

Old Radnor (Welsh: Pencraig) is a village and community in Powys, Wales. The community includes Old Radnor and the villages of Yardro, Dolyhir, Burlingjobb, Evenjobb (Welsh: Einsiob), Kinnerton and Walton. In the 2001 census and the 2011 census the community had a population of 741 (390 male and 351 female) in 323 households. Old Radnor lies on a lane off the A44 to the west of the Wales–England border. The 15th-century parish church, dedicated to Saint Stephen, is in Perpendicular Gothic style, and is noted for its early organ and organ case, early stained glass, fine rood screen and large pre-Norman font. Adjacent to it are earthworks known as Old Radnor Castle, but it is unclear if this was ever in fact a fortification.Riddings Brook, a tributary of the River Lugg, starts near Old Radnor. Old Radnor has one pub, the Harp Inn, a 15th-century farm house. New Radnor, which had replaced Old Radnor as the county town of Radnorshire, is further to the west.

Hergest Ridge is a large elongated hill which traverses the border between England and Wales in the United Kingdom, between the town of Kington in Herefordshire and the village of Gladestry in Powys. Its highest point, which is in England, is 426 metres (1,398 ft) high. It has a topographic prominence of 157.6 metres (517 ft) and thus is listed as a Marilyn."Hergest" is pronounced to rhyme with 'hardest' with a hard "g" (as in "garden").

Castle Nimble (also called Knapp; Maes Hyfaidd; Maes Hyvaidd) was a motte and bailey defensive fortification near Old Radnor, in Radnorshire (modern-day Powys), Wales. Castle Nimble appears to have had an oval-shaped ditched motte, with a semi-rectangular bailey, and some other enclosures, including possibly a pond.

Kington Rural is a civil parish in west Herefordshire, England, and is approximately 17 miles (30 km) north-west from the city and county town of Hereford. The parish borders Wales at the west, and contains the hamlets and small settlements of Upper Hergest, Lower Hergest, Chickward, Bredward, and Kingswood at the south, and Bradnor Green and Rushok at the north. The nearest town is the market town of Kington which, with its parish, is to a large extent enclosed by Kington Rural. Significant landmarks of the parish are the Castle Twts motte and bailey earthwork, Hergest Court 15th-century manor house, and Hergest Ridge on the England–Wales border.

Dolyhir railway station was a station in Dolyhir, Powys, Wales. The station opened in 1875 and closed in 1951. The station building survives today, and is located in the centre of a quarry. Great Western Railway closure signage is still visible on the building, nearly 70 years after its closure.

Lower Harpton is a settlement and civil parish about 2.5 miles of Knighton, in the county of Herefordshire, England. In 2001, the parish had a population of 33. The parish touches Kington Rural, Knill and Old Radnor in Wales. Lower Harpton shares a parish council with Kington Rural.

Upper Hergest is a hamlet in Herefordshire, England.

Dolyhir is a small settlement in Powys, Wales. It is near the A44 road and is 30 kilometres (19 mi) northwest of the city of Hereford. Dolyhir railway station was located next to the former quarry, which contains notable fossils.

Lower Hergest is a hamlet in Herefordshire, England.The local manor house, Hergest Court, is a Grade II* listed building built of a mixture of stone and timber frame with a moat. It dates back to c1430 and was built for Thomas Vaughan, son of Sir Roger Vaughan. It was the birthplace of Margaret Vaughan, wife of Sir John Hawkins.
