Sutton Cum Lound is a village located in Bassetlaw, north Nottinghamshire. It is located 3 miles from Retford. The civil parish is called Sutton. According to the 2001 census it has a population of 687, including Tithby and falling slightly to 673 at the 2011 census. The parish church of St Bartholomew is Norman, rebuilt in the Perpendicular style, with "unbridled curvilinear tracery" in the chancel windows. The village has a primary school. It borders the village of Barnby Moor which is about 1 mile away and is also very close to the village of Lound. The village has a number of public footpaths and walks such as those on Mire Hill.In 958, King Edgar granted an estate at Sutton to Oscytel, Archbishop of York.The village sometimes has traffic problems caused by the Level crossing on Station Road which leads to Barnby Moor, The crossing goes over the East Coast Main Line, which is a very busy railway line. However, there are three entrances to the village in total.The village is also very close to Wetlands Wildlife Park near Lound and many of its fishing lakes, as well as the Idle Valley Nature Reserve wetlands Site of Special Scientific Interest to the east of the village within walking distance. Mike Reid, an actor who played the part of Frank Butcher in the BBC programme EastEnders used to live in the village in the late 1970s.

The Idle Valley Nature Reserve, also known as Lound Gravel Pits or Sutton and Lound Gravel Pits, is a wetland Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) situated north-west of the town of Retford in the Bassetlaw district of north Nottinghamshire. The nature reserve is situated along the western bank of the River Idle and east of the villages of Sutton cum Lound and Lound. The nature reserve is managed by the Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust.

The Royal Ordnance Factory (ROF) Ranskill was a United Kingdom Ministry of Supply, World War II, Explosive ROF. It was built to manufacture cordite and the site was located adjacent to what is now known as the East Coast Main Line railway at Ranskill, Nottinghamshire, just north of the town of Retford.

Lound is a village in Nottinghamshire, England, four miles north of Retford. It has a population of 493, reducing to 471 at the 2011 census. The village is of Danish origin dating from the 8th century with a street (Town Street) running along the spine of the village, leading on to Lound Low Road. The oldest houses are tofts which are endways on to the street with strips of land running back from the road. Nearby villages are Sutton cum Lound and Mattersey. Lound is situated on a rise of land next to the flood plain of the river Idle. This has created large deposits of sand and gravel on the east side of the village.Activities at Lound are water skiing, fishing, horse riding, walking, bird watching. Some of these are situated in and around the open waters created by sand and gravel workings. Wetlands Wildfowl Reserve is situated on the outskirts of the village and there are also reserves belonging to Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust and Daneshill Lakes recreation area nearby. The Lound Bird Club [1] records bird life using the gravel quarries and surrounding woodland and farmland in this section of the River Idle Valley. Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust [2] has extended its ownership at its Idle Valley Nature Reserve and runs a programme of community focussed events from the Idle Valley Rural Learning Centre operated by North Nottinghamshire College.

Ranskill is a village and civil parish in the Bassetlaw district of Nottinghamshire, England, with its nearest town being Retford approximately 5 miles (8.0 kilometres) south. The Ranskill parish according to the 2001 census has 2,226 residents, falling to 1,362 at the 2011 census. There is also a Bassetlaw ward called Ranskill. This ward had a population of 2,417 at the 2011 census.Ranskill dates back to the Danish invasions of the 9th century where the name 'Ravenskelf' meant 'shelving knoll/ridge of the raven'.The village features St. Barnabas Church, built in 1878 and a Methodist chapel first built in 1868 and expanded in the 1930s. The Methodist chapel also features a schoolroom, where today the local newspaper, the STAR (Scrooby, Torworth and Ranskill) is printed. Ranskill also has a reading room, built in 1891 by the Gillott family as a library and reading room, where in 1909 the room was changed to include billiard tables. Today the room is still in use and features two billiard tables, two pool tables and a darts board. The East Coast Main Line railway passes to the east of the village, which was the site of a Royal Ordnance Factory from 1940 until 1975. Ranskill also had a railway station which opened in 1852 where there was a half-hourly service between Retford and Doncaster. The station closed in 1958.

Tiln is a hamlet in the civil parish of Hayton, in the Bassetlaw district, in the county of Nottinghamshire, England. It is located on the River Idle, 2 miles north of Retford, a mile north of Bolham and ½ mile from Retford Sewage Works. Tiln North Quarry is owned by Tarmac Ltd. Sand and gravel are extracted from this and other quarries in the area. Tiln was recorded in the Domesday Book as Tille/Tilne.
