Battle of the Square

Stortorvet ('The Grand Plaza') is a square in Oslo, Norway, located west of Oslo Cathedral.

Stortorvet is a tram stop on the Oslo Tramway in Oslo, Norway. The station is located on the square Stortorvet in the city centre. It is served by the lines 17, 18 and 19. In 2009, it was decided to improve the square, the station and the tram tracks in the street.

The 1858 Christiania fire, starting on 14 April 1858, severely destroyed several city blocks near Stortorvet in Christiania, Norway. 41 buildings were destroyed, and about 1,000 people lost their homes.

Oslo Cathedral (Norwegian: Oslo domkirke) — formerly Our Savior's Church (Norwegian: Vår Frelsers kirke) — is the main church for the Church of Norway Diocese of Oslo, as well as the parish church for downtown Oslo. The present building dates from 1694–1697. The Norwegian Royal Family and the Norwegian Government use the Cathedral for public events. It was closed for renovation in August 2006 and re-opened with a festive high mass on 18 April 2010.

Oslo Bazaars (Basarene Kirkeristen) are located at Oslo Cathedral, along the streets Karl Johans gate and Dronningens gate in Oslo, Norway. The buildings of the bazaar constitute a continuous facility that encircles three sides of the quarter with Oslo Cathedral.

Regjeringskvartalet (the Government Quarter) is a collection of buildings located in the centre of Norway's capital city Oslo, housing several offices for the Norwegian Government. The complex is situated approximately 300m northeast of the Parliament Building, and consists of nine buildings with about 1,960,000 sq f (182,000 m²) of office space for approximately 4,430 people.

Centralteatret (English: Central Theater) is a theatre on Akersgata in the city centre of Oslo, Norway.Centralteatret was established by the husband and wife acting team of Johan Fahlstrøm and Alma Fahlstrøm in 1897. The theatre was especially known for a repertoire of the light genre including comedy, revues and operettas, but also classics (such as Ibsen) and new Norwegian drama.From 1902, Harald Otto (1865–1928) was the theater manager and owner. His son, Reidar Otto (1890–1959) subsequently ran it, while his son, Harald Otto joined as manager in 1938. Members of the Otto family ran the theater until 1959.Since 1959 the premises have been used partly as a television studio. Central theater is now renovated. The hall has 387 seats. Centralteatret is Norway's oldest theater site in operation.

Posthuset station was a former tram stop on the Oslo Tramway. It has since been replaced by Dronningens gate station.Posthuset station was located between Jernbanetorget station in the east and Kongens gate station in the west. It is named after the old post office of central Oslo (now superseded by Postgirobygget), which was located at Prinsens gate 8.

Dronningens gate is a tram station in the Oslo Tramway. It is served by lines 11, 12 and 13. It is served with SL79 and SL95 trams. Because, Line 13 do not operate at Jernbanetorget station, Dronningens gate is recommended instead, if you need to travel using line 13 to Lilleaker or Skøyen.

The 2011 Norway attacks, referred to in Norway as 22 July (Norwegian: 22. juli) or as 22/7, were two domestic terrorist attacks by neo-Nazi Anders Behring Breivik against the government, the civilian population, and a Workers' Youth League (AUF) summer camp, in which 77 people were killed. The first attack was a car bomb explosion in Oslo within Regjeringskvartalet, the executive government quarter of Norway, at 15:25:22 (CEST). The bomb was placed inside a van next to the tower block housing the office of the then Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg. The explosion killed eight people and injured at least 209 people, twelve severely.The second attack occurred less than two hours later at a summer camp on the island of Utøya in Tyrifjorden, Viken (former Buskerud). The camp was organised by the AUF, the youth wing of the ruling Norwegian Labour Party (AP). Breivik, dressed in a homemade police uniform and showing false identification, took a ferry to the island and opened fire at the participants, killing 67 and injuring 32. Among the dead were friends of Stoltenberg, and the stepbrother of Norway's crown princess Mette-Marit. The Utøya attack is the deadliest mass shooting by a lone individual in modern history. The attack was the deadliest in Norway since World War II. A survey found that one in four Norwegians knew someone affected. The European Union, NATO and several countries expressed their support for Norway and condemned the attacks. The 2012 Gjørv Report concluded that Norway's police could have prevented the bombing and caught Breivik faster at Utøya, and that measures to prevent further attacks and "mitigate adverse effects" should have been implemented.The Norwegian Police arrested Breivik, a 32-year-old Norwegian right-wing extremist, on Utøya island and charged him with both attacks. His trial took place between 16 April and 22 June 2012 in Oslo District Court, where Breivik admitted carrying out the attacks, but denied criminal guilt and claimed the defence of necessity (jus necessitatis). On 24 August, Breivik was convicted as charged and sentenced to 21 years of preventive detention in prison, the maximum sentence allowed in Norway.

Johan Nygaardsvolds plass is a town square in Oslo, Norway. It is located between the offices of the Ministry of Finance, Høyblokka ("High Block"), and Y Block in Regjeringskvartalet. The square encompasses the Regjeringsparken ("The Government Park") with a water feature and an allée of trees. The square and park were designed by architect firm of Lunde & Løvseth. The square is named after Prime Minister Johan Nygaardsvold (1879-1952) who was Prime Minister in Norway from 20 March 1935 to 25 June 1945 as the leader of Nygaardsvold's Cabinet. No buildings have an address on this square.
