Hluboká nad Vltavou (Czech pronunciation: [ˈɦlubokaː ˈnad vl̩tavou]; until 1885 Podhrad, German: Frauenberg) is a town in České Budějovice District in the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 5,600 inhabitants. The town is known for the Hluboká Castle.

Townshend International School is a private, Baháʼí-inspired International school located in Hluboká nad Vltavou in the Czech Republic. Founded in 1992, the school draws some 140 students from approximately 30 countries each year. The school uses the Cambridge curriculum at all grade levels from Kindergarten through secondary school, and is recognised as a Cambridge International Examination Centre. The school is named after the Irish scholar and humanist George Townshend, who was a Hand of the Cause of God in the Baháʼí Faith. Boarding students reside in either one of the two dormitories.

University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice (Czech: Jihočeská univerzita v Českých Budějovicích, Latin: Universitas Bohemiae Meridionalis Budovicensis, JU or JČU) is a public university located in the city of České Budějovice (with branch campuses in Tábor, Vodňany, Nové Hrady) in the Czech Republic. Established in 1991, it has almost 9,000 students in more than 220 programmes including bachelor´s & master´s degrees as well as doctoral programmes and an academic staff 1,500. 592 students are currently enrolled in the university for their doctoral work.

The Battle of Sahay or Zahájí was fought on 24 May 1742 near village of Zahájí, about 15 km (10 mi) northwest of České Budějovice in southern Bohemia, between the French under the Duc de Broglie and the Austrians under Lobkowicz. The battle was part of the War of the Austrian Succession and was conducted in cooperation with the Prussians under Frederick the Great who had defeated the Austrians a week previously at the battle of Chotusitz. Broglie won a small, but politically important, victory which combined with Frederick's success at Chotusitz disposed Maria Theresa to cede Silesia in the Treaty of Breslau on 11 June 1742.
