Orton on the Hill

Morebarne or Moore Barn is a grange originally belonging to the Abbey of Merevale, near Orton on the Hill in Sparkenhoe Hundred, Leicestershire, England. It is mentioned in possession of Robert Bradshaw in 1567, and as the 'capite' of Robert Bradshaw esq. the brother of John Bradshaw of Orton on the Hill in 1609. They were descendants of Hugh Bradshaw of Nantwich in Lancashire, who purchased the manor in 1546. It was later sold to the Steeles who bought the manor, the estate and the attached "mansion house", sometime after 1640. John Nichols records the grange as a holding of 308 acres (1.25 km2) enclosed in a ring fence (Vol. IV, p. 853) During the English Civil War Mr Bradshaw was extremely hard hit by the loss of valuable horses taken by parliamentary troops from the local Warwickshire garrisons. A claim for losses submitted to the Warwickshire county committee from June, 1646 reveals that on one visit Captain Ottaway and Captain Flower from the Coventry garrison seized fifteen valuable horses worth an estimated total of £242.13.4. In June, 1643, Captain Castleton of the Tamworth Castle garrison took a stoned colt from Mr Bradshaw estimated to be worth £10 and on another occasion Captain Hunt of the Astley garrison took two mares and a stoned horse worth £36. Little Orton is a hamlet in the English county of Leicestershire. Little Orton is part of the civil parish of Twycross (where the population is included) ; it is located southwest of the main village being divided from it by the A444 road and Twycross Zoo.

Warton is a village in the North Warwickshire district of Warwickshire, England. It is five miles east of Tamworth and four miles north-west of Atherstone, and is in the civil parish of Polesworth. Warton is a small village, which, being surrounded by rivers, may derive its name from Waverton (Water village). There is still a Waverton Avenue in the village, even though the street was actually constructed in the 1960s. The village has grown considerably since the 1960s, when its character was changed after an inflow of overspill families from Birmingham. Although small, the village has a pub (The Office - The old Fox and Dogs pub and adjoining land is being converted to houses), as well as a Working Men's Club. There is one shop – Maypole Stores (now called Top Shop), named after the Maypole that stood at the highest point of the village. In the 1980s, there were several shops, but all but one have now closed. Up until the late 1990s, there were two functional shops in the village, but the most northern one was converted into a residential property by its owner.

Norton Juxta Twycross, usually known as simply "Norton" (or "Norton-Juxta"), is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Twycross, in the Hinckley and Bosworth district, in the county of Leicestershire, England. The village is part of the church parish of Appleby Magna, with the vicar based in Appleby. In 1931 the parish had a population of 249.

Sheepy is a civil parish in the Borough of Hinckley and Bosworth in Leicestershire, England. It contains the villages of Sheepy Magna, Sheepy Parva, Sibson, Wellsborough, Upton, Pinwall and Cross Hands—collectively 449 homes. At the 2001 census, the parish had a population of 1,192, including Orton on the Hill but falling slightly to 1,174 at the 2011 census.

Sheepy Fields is a 4.9-hectare (12-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest north of Sheepy Magna in Leicestershire.The two hay meadows in this site are on post-glacial river terrace deposits. There are diverse herbs such as lady's mantle, adder's tongue, hayrattle, pepper saxifrage, bulbous buttercup and cowslip.The site is private land with no public access.

Appleby Parva, or Little Appleby (Known locally as Over-Town), part of the parish of Appleby Magna in Leicestershire, is a hamlet about 1 mile (1.6 km) south-west of Appleby church. It straddles the A444, south of the crossroads of the highways from Ashby de la Zouch to Tamworth, from Atherstone to Burton upon Trent and Junction 11 of the M42/A42. Appleby Magna and Appleby Parva are usually collectively known as Appleby. The village was also calculated to be the centre of population of Great Britain in 2000, according to research by Professor Danny Dorling.

Appleby Hall was a manor house or stately home built in the small hamlet of Appleby Parva, on the outskirts of Appleby Magna. A Manor was mentioned in the Domesday Book and there have been several houses on the site until the final building, a Classical style Stately Home known as Appleby Hall, was built in the 1830s. Like many landed families, the Moore family who owned it fell on hard times, and the Hall was demolished in the 1920s.

The River Sence is a river which flows in Leicestershire, England. The tributaries of the Sence, including the Saint and Tweed, fan out over much of western Leicestershire from Charnwood Forest and Coalville in the north-east to Hinckley and almost to Watling Street in the south and south-west. Its watershed almost coincides with Hinckley and Bosworth Borough of Leicestershire, which was formed in 1974 by amalgamation of Market Bosworth Rural District and Hinckley Urban District. It flows into the Anker, which in turn flows into the River Tame. It is part of the wider River Trent catchment, which covers much of central England. In 1881, Sebastian Evans wrote that the usual names for this river were Shenton Brook and Sibson Brook.

The River Tweed is a short tributary of the River Sence. It rises around the west of the village of Barwell, Leicestershire, England and flows westwards, crossing the A447 at Abraham's Bridge.The Tweed is synonymous with many of the small rivers that rise in West Leicestershire. Starting from a number of small springs, it is not unknown for the river to flood, and as its source is in an urban area the flooding can hit a wide area. The river meanders gently through the West Leicestershire flood plains, passing near the villages of Dadlington, Shenton, Sibson and to Ratcliffe Culey where it flows into the River Sence and thenceforth into the River Anker, itself a tributary of the River Tame. At its source a rain drop could fall either side of a hill; on one side it takes a circuitous route via the Tweed, but on the other side it will flow via the River Soar to the Trent, although its eventual route is similar.

Sir John Moore Church of England Primary School, previously known as Appleby Grammar School, is a junior school situated in the village of Appleby Magna, in Leicestershire, England. The school was constructed between 1693 and 1697, based on an original design by Sir Christopher Wren and Sir William Wilson. The school was established and financed by Sir John Moore, the younger son of the local squire who became Lord Mayor and Alderman of London. The school occupies an elevated position to the south of the village and sits in its own walled, landscaped grounds totaling just over 3.5 acres (14,000 m2). The main school building is Grade I listed; the gates, gatepiers, wall and outbuildings are all Grade II listed. The primary school was rated "outstanding" in its last Ofsted inspection.
