Kansas's 1st congressional district is a congressional district in the U.S. state of Kansas. Commonly known as "The Big First", the district encompasses all or part of 64 counties spanning more than half of the state, making it the seventh-largest district in the nation that does not cover an entire state. Located within the district are Manhattan, Salina, Dodge City, Garden City, Hays, McPherson, Hutchinson, and Lawrence. From 2011 to 2017, the district was represented by Republican Tim Huelskamp, who was originally elected in 2010 to succeed fellow Republican Jerry Moran, who in turn ran successfully for the U.S. Senate seat formerly held by Sam Brownback. Huelskamp was re-elected twice in 2012 and 2014 but lost the 2016 Republican primary for a fourth term to obstetrician Roger Marshall.Marshall won re-election in 2018, then he was elected to the United States Senate in 2020. He was replaced in the House by former Lieutenant Governor Tracey Mann of Salina. Mann will become the first representative for the district to reside east of US Highway 281 since the district assumed its current configuration in the 88th Congress. With a Cook Partisan Voting Index rating of R+18, it is the most Republican district in Kansas. Republicans dominate every level of government, often winning by over 65 percent of the vote on the occasion that they face any opposition at all. Since its creation in 1875, it has elected a Democrat once. In general, Riley County and Douglas County are the only counties in the district where Democrats are competitive, due to the sizable presence of the University of Kansas and Kansas State University. It covers two time zones (it includes all of Kansas's share of the Mountain Time Zone) and parts of three television markets (Topeka and Wichita, as well as Lincoln, Nebraska). Due to its size, its congressman usually becomes a statewide political figure. Proving this, since it assumed its present configuration in 1963, four of the district's former congressmen were later elected to the U.S. Senate: Bob Dole, Pat Roberts, Jerry Moran and Roger Marshall. The district typically gives its congressmen very long tenures in Washington. From 1963 until 2011, it was held by just four members: Bob Dole, Keith Sebelius, Roberts and Moran.

The Franklin County Courthouse, located in Courthouse Square on Main Street in Ottawa, is the seat of government of Franklin County, Kansas. The courthouse was built in 1892. Although Ottawa had been the county seat since 1864, it lacked a permanent courthouse prior to then. Architect George P. Washburn designed the courthouse in the Romanesque Revival style; the red brick courthouse is considered one of Washburn's "most outstanding works". The design features four square corner towers, a typical feature of Washburn's designs; two cupolas on the roof include a bell tower and a clock tower. The intricate roof design includes a main hipped roof with gable ends on each side and steep hipped roofs atop the towers. The roof line is ridged with a metal spine, and a dentillated cornice runs beneath the roof's edge. The east and west entrances to the courthouse are through large porches supported by brick columns and topped with balconies. The second-story windows are arched and connected by a band of stone.The courthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 17, 1972.

The Dietrich Cabin is a log cabin located in Ottawa City Park in Ottawa, Kansas. Jacob Dietrich, a German immigrant, built the cabin in 1859. The cabin replaced the family's original home, which was built in 1857, and burned down the following year. After Dietrich died in 1863, his wife Catherine maintained the cabin while raising their three sons. The cabin later became a farmhouse, and several rooms were added to it. In 1961, the cabin was restored to its original condition. It is now a pioneer museum operated by the Franklin County Historical Society, and is open to the public on Sunday afternoons in the summer. The cabin is one of the few surviving examples in Kansas of a pioneer log cabin, an important building type in both the settlement and architectural history of the state.The cabin was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 23, 1972.

The Ottawa High School and Junior High School, located at 526 and 506 S. Main St. respectively, are the historic former high school and junior high school in Ottawa, Kansas. The high school was built in 1917, while the junior high school was built from 1927 to 1928; an enclosed hallway connecting the two buildings was built with the junior high school. The high school was the first school in Ottawa to be built solely as a high school and the eighth school built in Ottawa. George P. Washburn & Son designed the high school in the Collegiate Gothic style. When the junior high school was constructed ten years later, the firm, by then known as Washburn & Stookey, designed the building in the same style as the high school. In 1966, a new high school was built for the upper three classes of students; the freshman class moved to the building in 1976, and the old high school and junior high school became a middle school. The two buildings were connected by a multi-purpose room in the same year. The middle school later vacated the building.The school was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 6, 2000.

KTJO-FM (88.9 FM) was a radio station broadcasting a modern rock music format. Licensed to Ottawa, Kansas, United States, the station was owned by Ottawa University.The University surrendered the station's license to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on January 7, 2016; the FCC cancelled the license and deleted the call sign from the database on January 8.

Tauy Jones Hall is the oldest surviving building on the Ottawa University campus at 10th and Cedar Streets in Ottawa, Kansas and has a copper roofed cupola at its peak. The building was named after John Tecumseh “Tauy” Jones, who was of half Chippewa heritage and served as an interpreter for the Pottawatomie.Emerson & Plank began construction of the building in 1866 under President Isaac Smith Kalloch. Construction was completed in 1869. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 14, 1982. Tauy Jones Hall is currently home to "the Chancellor's Office, Human Resources Department, Finance Department, Marketing Department, and the Office of University Advancement."

The Ottawa Library is a Carnegie library located at the intersection of 5th and Main Streets in Ottawa, Kansas. Built in 1903, the library housed the collection of the Ottawa Library Association, which was founded in 1873. The Carnegie Foundation provided a $15,000 grant toward the library's construction. George P. Washburn, a prominent Kansas architect who lived in Ottawa, designed the library in a free classical style. The two-story yellow brick building has a limestone foundation and a hipped roof. The building's main entrance has a two-story portico with classical ornamentation, and the rear features a hemicycle.The library was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 1, 1980. It is also part of the Historic Ottawa Central Business District, which is also listed on the National Register. The building no longer serves as Ottawa's library (which is now located in the downtown area), and now serves as an art and culture center.

Ottawa University (OU) is a private Baptist university with its main campus in Ottawa, Kansas. It also has a second residential campus in Surprise, Arizona, and adult campuses in the Kansas City, Phoenix and Milwaukee metropolitan areas. It was founded in 1865 and is affiliated with the Ottawa Tribe of Oklahoma and the American Baptist Churches USA. The residential campus in Ottawa has a student enrollment of more than 850 students, while the OUAZ campus in Surprise boasts more than 900. In total, Ottawa University serves more than 4,000 students across all of its campuses and online.

AdventHealth Field, formerly known as Cook Field and Peoples Bank Field, is a sport stadium in Ottawa, Kansas, United States. The facility is primarily used by the Ottawa University football, lacrosse, soccer, and track & field teams. The field turf was added in 2007 and the facility is considered one of the best of its kind in the United States for small college football.The stadium is also used for local high school sporting events and other community events.

Ottawa High School is a public high school located in Ottawa, Kansas, operated by Ottawa USD 290 public school district, serving students in grades 9-12. Its athletic teams, known as the Cyclones, compete in the Frontier Athletic League. The principal is Kelly Whittaker, the assistant principal is Johnny Lewis, and the athletic director is Shawn Phillips. The current enrollment of the school is approximately 689 students, and the school has 102 teachers, secretaries, paras, and nurses. Ottawa Middle School is its main feeder school.
