Kenton, Devon

Powderham Castle is a fortified manor house situated within the parish and former manor of Powderham, within the former hundred of Exminster, Devon, about 6 miles (9.7 km) south of the city of Exeter and 1⁄4 mile (0.4 km) north-east of the village of Kenton, where the main public entrance gates are located. It is a Grade I listed building. The park and gardens are Grade II* listed in the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.It is situated on flat, formerly marshy ground on the west bank of the River Exe estuary where it is joined by its tributary the River Kenn. On the opposite side of the Exe is the small village of Lympstone. Starting with a structure built sometime after 1390, the present castle was expanded and altered extensively in the 18th and 19th centuries. The castle remains the seat of the Courtenay family, Earls of Devon.

Starcross is a small station on the Exeter to Plymouth line in the village of Starcross, Devon, England. It is 8 miles 44 chains (13.8 km) down the line from Exeter St Davids and 202 miles 36 chains (325.8 km) from London Paddington, via Box. The station is managed by Great Western Railway, which operates all trains serving it. One of the South Devon Railway engine houses, which formerly powered the trains on this line, is situated alongside the station.

The Exmouth to Starcross Ferry is a passenger ferry which crosses the mouth of the River Exe in the English county of Devon. It links the port town of Exmouth on the eastern side of the Exe estuary to the village of Starcross on the western side. The ferry is operated by Exe to Sea Cruises. On the Exmouth side it departs from the ferry steps at Exmouth Marina. On the Starcross side it departs from Starcross Pier, adjacent to Starcross railway station on the Riviera Line. The ferry operates on an hourly basis during the day, from Easter to October, and can accommodate cycles. The operators also run cruises along the Exe estuary and trips around Dawlish Bay.

The Exeter Ship Canal, also known as the Exeter Canal is a canal leading from (and beside) the River Exe to Exeter Quay in the city of Exeter, Devon, England. It was first constructed in the 1560s predating the "canal mania" period and is one of the oldest artificial waterways in the UK.

Starcross is a village with a 2011 census recorded population of 1,737 situated on the west shore of the Exe Estuary in Teignbridge in the English county of Devon. The village is popular in summer with leisure craft, and is home to one of the United Kingdom's oldest sailing clubs. The A379 road and the London to Penzance railway line both run through the village along the banks of the estuary. Starcross railway station is situated on the railway, and the Starcross to Exmouth Ferry, a small passenger ferry, operates across the estuary to Exmouth. A notable feature of Starcross is the Italianate pumping engine house, the best surviving building from Brunel's unsuccessful Atmospheric Railway. The enterprise is commemorated in the Atmospheric Railway pub located opposite the present-day railway station. Note that the Brunel pumphouse now houses the Starcross Fishing and Cruising Club rather than a museum dedicated to the atmospheric railway, as quoted in many guide books. St. Paul's Church is found on Church Street, opposite the Almshouses. It was mentioned in Piggott and Co.'s pocket atlas, topography and gazetteer of England 1840 as St. Paul's Chapel. Powderham Castle is located north of Starcross on the A369 road towards the village of Kenton.

Cofton is a small village, parish and former historic estate near Dawlish, Devon.

Cockwood is a small village on the west side of the Exe Estuary in Dawlish civil parish, Teignbridge district, in the county of Devon, England. Lying between the villages of Dawlish Warren and Starcross, it is separated from the estuary by the main railway line between Exeter and Torquay, and is set around a small tidal harbour which boats must reach via a bridge under the railway line. Cockwood has two public houses. The Anchor Inn which is on the harbour front and the Ship Inn, nearer the village hall. The Anchor Inn is over 450 years old and was originally opened as a Seamen's Mission. It was a haven for seamen and smugglers and is said to be haunted by a friendly ghost and his dog. The Ship Inn is built from cob. South of the village centre, the railway line is crossed by a pedestrian track leading to Cockwood Steps, with a landing for small boats and a view over the estuary. The railways tracks have occasionally been affected by flooding from the Exe.

Lympstone Commando railway station is a railway station situated on the Avocet Line, a branch line from Exeter to Exmouth in Devon, England. Whilst signs on the station platform state that passengers alighting must have business with the Lympstone Commando Camp, this is no longer true and members of the general public can access the station via a public footpath.

Commando Training Centre Royal Marines (CTCRM) is the principal military training centre for the Royal Marines. It is situated near the villages of Lympstone and Exton, between the city of Exeter, and the town of Exmouth in Devon, England.

The Mountain Leader Training Cadre is a training element of the United Kingdom's Royal Marines which provides instruction in mountain warfare, arctic warfare, cold weather survival and operations, and cliff assault. The cadre has a permanent staff of mountain and arctic warfare instructors and trains mountain leaders for employment in the formations of the corps. The cadre is part of the Mountain Leader and ISTAR Company within Specialist Wing of the Commando Training Centre Royal Marines and is based in Lympstone.
