Sedgefield (borough)

The Church of St Edmund is a Church of England parish church in Sedgefield, County Durham. The church is a Grade I listed building and dates from the 13th century.

The Manor House in Sedgefield, County Durham was built in 1707 on high ground in a country setting looking on to St. Edmund's Church, as a mansion house for wealthy judge Robert Wright. Its notoriety arises from the eminence of the judge of Middle Temple who went on to be Chief Justice of colonial South Carolina, and also because it is a rare example of Queen Anne style architecture in an area as far north as Sedgefield, with fine and distinctive architectural features including, reportedly, a wood carving by Grinling Gibbons. In 1756 the house was acquired by John Burdon of nearby Hardwick Estate who installed a noteworthy Palladian Venetian window very likely by the architect James Paine. In the twentieth century the Manor House was the head offices of Sedgefield Rural District Council and after that Sedgefield Magistrates' Court.

Sedgefield is a market town and civil parish in County Durham, England. It had a population of 4,986 in the 2021 census. It has the only operating racecourse in County Durham.

Sedgefield Community College is an coeducational secondary school located in Sedgefield in County Durham, England.The school takes in students from most of the surrounding places including Sedgefield itself, Fishburn, Trimdon, Trimdon Grange, Trimdon Station, Trimdon Colliery, Coxhoe, Bishop Middleham, and West Cornforth and individual students travel in from a much wider area. The original 1960s era school buildings closed on 17 December 2010 and were replaced on the same site with a new build school. Unusually, the original school had its own farm, which had Saddleback pigs, Jacob sheep, assorted hens, ducks and a range of other animals. The farm closed when the new school building was opened. In 2003 the school was visited by former American President George W. Bush as part of a visit to former Prime minister Tony Blair's constituency.In March 2017, the school was rated 'Outstanding' by Ofsted.Previously a community school administered by Durham County Council, in March 2020 converted to academy status. The school is now sponsored by The Laidlaw Schools Trust. The school was awarded world class school status in 2020 and is known as one of the best schools in County Durham and the whole region.In 2021, Sedgefield Community College was featured in the BBC One documentary Paddy and Christine McGuinness: Our Family and Autism

NETPark, or the North East Technology Park, is a science park in Sedgefield, Durham. It is owned by Durham County Council and run by Business Durham, the business support service of the council, with strategic partners Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) and Durham University.NETPark hosts three national catapult centres: CPI was a founding partner of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult in 2011 and are joined by the North East Centre of Excellence for Satellite Applications and the Space Enterprise Lab NETPark, part of the Satellite Applications Catapult, and the Compound Semiconductor Applications Catapult North East. CPI also manages three national innovation centres at NETPark: the National Formulation Centre, the National Printable Electronics Centre and the National Healthcare Photonics Centre. It is also home to Orbit, Durham University's enterprise zone, and the university's Centre for Advanced Instrumentation. NETPark was opened in 2004 by the local Member of Parliament for Sedgefield and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Tony Blair.

The County Durham science park is on the site of the former Winterton Hospital and is home to over 40 companies, employing over 600 people. Sectors include advanced materials and manufacturing, nanotechnology, X-Ray technology, semiconductors, defence, electronics, photonics, robotics, pharmaceutical and space and satellite technology. Since its inception in 2000, NETPark has developed a number of facilities including the NETPark Plexus, NETPark Discovery 1 & 2 and NETPark Explorer buildings totalling over 127,000 sq ft of space. In 2021 Durham County Council approved a £50m investment to fund an additional 270,000 sq ft of space over the next five years. NETPark is owned by Durham County Council and managed by Business Durham. NETPark is the only UK Science Park with two National Catapult Centres CPI's High Value Manufacturing Catapult and North East Centre of Excellence for Satellite Applications. NETPark is home to three national innovation centres all managed by Centre for Process Innovation including National Printable Electronics Centre, National Formulations Centre and National Centre for Healthcare Photonics. Durham University is also part of the science park, through Orbit, the new University Enterprise Zone and The Centre for Advanced Instrumentation, which was the first building to be constructed on the site in 2004.

Winterton Hospital was a psychiatric hospital north of Sedgefield in County Durham, England.

Hardwick Hall in Sedgefield, County Durham is a building of historical significance and is listed on the English Heritage Register. A major part of it was built in the late 1700s but it is possible that some of it dates from about 1634. It was the residence for many notable people for two centuries. It is now a hotel which provides accommodation and restaurant services and caters for special events particularly weddings.

Hardwick Hall Country Park is a park located in County Durham near Sedgefield. It is registered with the Register of Parks and Gardens as a II* site, which indicates that a park is "of exceptional historic interest."

Sedgefield Racecourse is an English left-handed horse racing course, used for jump racing. It is owned by Arena Racing Company and located close to the town of Sedgefield, County Durham. The course is an undulating, left handed oval of about one mile and two furlongs, with tight bends. The finishing straight is about three furlongs in length, with a steep descent followed by a climb to the winning post after the last fence. It is also used as a venue for numerous other indoor and outdoor events, such as weddings and conferences. The course was almost shut down three times in the 20th century.

Fishburn is a village and civil parish in County Durham, in England. It is situated about 12 miles west of Hartlepool. It had a population of 2,454, increasing to 2,588 at the 2011 Census.

Fishburn Grassland is a Site of Special Scientific Interest in the Sedgefield district of County Durham, England. It lies between the villages of Fishburn and Trimdon, just north of the former. The site consists of a small area of species-rich magnesian limestone grassland, a vegetation type that is rare nationally and mainly restricted to County Durham and Tyne and Wear. There are two distinct plant communities, the larger of which, dominated by blue moor-grass, Sesleria albicans, and small scabious, Scabiosa columbaria, is known only from east Durham. The other community, dominated by upright brome, Bromus erectus, is common on limestone in southern England but is at its northern limit in Durham, where there are no other protected sites.
