Former Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Residence

The Old Vanderburgh County Jail, commonly referred to as "the Old Jail," was built in 1890 in Evansville, Indiana. The Old Jail is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Old Jail consists of two different structures that are attached: (1) the actual jail and (2) the former Vanderburgh County sheriff's residence.

The Evansville Race Riot occurred in July 1903 in Evansville, Indiana and was the worst riot in the city's history. The riots occurred after a black man shot and killed a white policeman and ultimately resulted in 13 deaths.On July 3, an African-American man named Lee Brown, aka Robert Lee, had a dispute with another African-American man, Tom Berry, at a bar and attempted to return to the bar with a gun but was stopped by Louis N. Massey, the most senior policeman on the force. Massey attempted to arrest Brown but Brown shot and fatally wounded Massey; however, Massey was able to fire back before dying, wounding Brown who eventually succumbed to injuries as well on July 31. A mob of several thousand citizens (mostly all white) formed outside the Vanderburgh County Jail on July 6 and attempted to storm the jail with the intention of lynching Brown and 16 other black inmates. Around 200 militiamen then opened fire on the mob, killing and injuring several rioters. The crowd then began looting hardware stores of weapons and stormed into black neighborhoods in an attempt to expel black people from Evansville. The rioting continued until July 10 and a total of 13 people died during the riot, with more than 40 others seriously wounded and about 2,000 of Evansville's 8,000 black residents fleeing the city. It is unclear as to whether the mob or the militia were to blame for the deaths. Several accounts describe the escalation as coming to a head after a rock was thrown by someone in the crowd, at the militia, who in turn fired warning shots which caused chaos.Excerpt - "Two more deaths added to the list. Two more deaths were added to the list of fatalities resulting from the shooting of Monday night, last evening Frank Lamble and Charles Taylor, passing away from the effect of the wounds received. This makes a total of nine deaths so far, and the list will most likely swell to ten. FRANK LAMBLE - The death of Lamble took place last evening about 5 o'clock at the Gilbert Sanitarium where he had been since the shooting. His death was caused by the bullet wound which struck him in the chin and ranged downward... He was unconscious from the first and never recovered sufficiently to talk of the occurrence or to give any information of how he was shot...."The people killed during the riot were:

Evansville Brewing Company is a historic brewery located in downtown Evansville, Indiana. It was built between 1891 and 1893, and is a four-story, Romanesque Revival style brick building.: Part 1, p. 24 It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Fellwock Garage, also known as Glass Specialty Company, is a historic commercial building located in downtown Evansville, Indiana. It was designed by the architecture firm Harris & Shopbell Co. and built in 1908.: Part 1 It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

The Old Fellwock Auto Company is a building built in 1923 in fine Prairie School style. It was designed by Shopbell & Company and by Edward J. Thole (who became a partner at Shopbell & Company). The building is identified by Evansville historic preservation specialists as a "creditable Sullivanesque essay.": 14 It was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

Court Building, also known as the Furniture Building, is a historic commercial building located in downtown Evansville, Indiana. It was designed by the architectural firm Harris & Shopbell and built in 1909. It is a seven-story, Beaux Arts style building sheathed in brick and limestone.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

The Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Coliseum (a.k.a. Veterans Memorial Coliseum, The Coliseum, Evansville Coliseum) is a multi-purpose auditorium and meeting space in downtown Evansville, Indiana.

The Greyhound Bus Terminal in downtown Evansville, Indiana, also known as the Greyhound Bus Station, is a Streamline Moderne-style building from 1938. It was built at a cost of $150,000. Its architects include W.S. Arrasmith who designed numerous other Greyhound depots. The terminal, at the corner of Third and Sycamore streets, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.In July 2008, the long-unused bus terminal and its site had been considered in discussions about potential locations for a new arena that would replace Roberts Municipal Stadium. By December, city council approved plans to build the Ford Center in another downtown location.In December 2011, then Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel announced plans to turn the adjacent property into Bicentennial Park to celebrate the city's upcoming bicentennial in 2012.In 2016, a restaurant named Bru Burger opened inside the old terminal.

McCurdy Building, also known as the Sears, Roebuck and Company Building, is a historic commercial building located in downtown Evansville, Indiana. It was built in 1920, and is a four-story brick building. The first floor features large display windows framed with limestone pilasters. A two-story addition was constructed in 1937, later raised to four stories in 1946. A two-story limestone faced addition, known as The Annex, was constructed in 1943. In 1925, it was occupied by the first Sears store to operate as a direct retail business independent of a catalog department.: 2, 3 It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

The Old Vanderburgh County Courthouse, often simply called the "Old Courthouse," was once the center of Vanderburgh County, Indiana government. Construction started in the spring of 1888 and was completed in November 1890. The building was ready to be occupied by the county government in early 1891. It sits in the heart of downtown Evansville. The building was designed by architect Henry W. Wolters of Louisville, Kentucky and constructed by Charles Pearce & Company of Indianapolis. The 19th century German Beaux-Arts architecture masterpiece cost $379,450 to build. The Old Courthouse occupies an entire city block, bounded by Court, Fourth, Vine and Fifth Streets, with each side being encrusted with sculptures and stone carvings in Indiana limestone. The fourteen main statues of human figures are the work of Franz Engelsmann, who studied under the great German masters before setting up his studio in Chicago. In addition, carvings of vegetables, fruits, and flowers indigenous to the area adorn the capitals of the forty-eight pairs of pilasters around the entire building.Before the courthouse was built, the site was a basin where canal boats on the Wabash and Erie Canal would deliver cargo and turn around for the return trip north. After the advent of the railroads and the canal's abandonment, the site was filled in and the courthouse was constructed upon it. A tunnel runs beneath Vine Street connecting the Old Courthouse to the Old Vanderburgh County Jail.

The Hulman Building (originally Central Union Bank it also became a Morris Plan Bank) is a ten-story art deco high rise in downtown Evansville, Indiana. Construction began in 1928 and was completed in 1930 with a brick facade of light yellow. It was the first of several Art Deco buildings to grace Evansville's skyline.: Part 1, p. 17 It was initially built as the new Central Union Bank Building and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as "Morris Plan (Central Union Bank)". However, the bank failed on 11 January 1932 during the height of the Great Depression. It is more commonly known as the Hulman Building due to its subsequent ownership by the Hulman Family of Terre Haute, Indiana, former owners of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The building was the headquarters of Vectren and its predecessor companies until May 2005, when Vectren's new headquarters was completed next to the Ohio River. It currently houses the Evansville Commerce Bank and a law firm, among others.

Fifth Third Center is a skyscraper located in downtown Evansville, Indiana. The building has 15 stories and rises to a height of 226 ft (68.9 m) with 180,500 square feet (16,770 m2), and has an attached parking garage for about 450 cars on the south end of the building. It is currently the tallest building in Evansville. Jones & Mah designed the building in 1979 for Citizens National Bank, a Fifth Third Bank predecessor.
