August 2016 Central Italy earthquake

Accumoli is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Rieti in the Italian region of Lazio, located about 110 kilometres (68 mi) northeast of Rome and about 45 kilometres (28 mi) northeast of Rieti. It is located in the natural park known as the "Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park". Located at an altitude of 855 m above sea level in the Umbria-Marche Apennines, Accumoli is an enclave within the province of Ascoli Piceno. Until 1927, it was part of the province of Aquila in Abruzzo. The climate is typical internal Apennines with cold, snowy winters and summers almost never too hot.

The 1639 Amatrice earthquake occurred on 7 October near Amatrice, in the upper valley of the river Tronto, at the time part of the Kingdom of Naples, now Italy.

Lago di Scandarello is a reservoir in the Province of Rieti, Lazio, Italy. It was created in 1924 when a dam was built across Scandarello torrente, a tributary of the Tronto. It is near Amatrice. The lake is 3 km long and its surface area is 1 km². The volume of the lake is 0.012 km3 and its maximum depth is 41 m. The lake is at an elevation of 868 m above sea level.

It was built in 1428 and it was dedicated to Saint Nicholas, but it was modified over subsequent centuries and rededicated to Saint Augustine of Hippo. Most of the church was destroyed in a series of earthquakes in 2016–17.

Amatrice (Italian pronunciation: [amaˈtriːtʃe]; Sabino: L'Amatrici) is a town and comune in the province of Rieti, in northern Lazio (central Italy), and the center of the food-agricultural area of Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park. The town was devastated by a powerful earthquake on 24 August 2016. It is a member of the I Borghi più belli d'Italia ("The most beautiful villages of Italy") association.
