Kalamassery (IPA: [kɐɭɐmɐʃːeːɾi]) is a municipality in the Ernakulam district of Kerala, India. It is located 9.6 km (6.0 mi) northeast of the Kochi centre, and is a part of the Kochi metropolitan area. The area's location along the NH 66 and proximity to the IT centres in Kakkanad has enabled it to see a large spurt in economic development since the 1980s.Kalamassery is a major hub for industrial and IT activities in Kochi. The Kalamassery Industrial Estate set up by the Government of Kerala is home to many major companies. Kalamassery is also home to educational institutions such as the National University of Advanced Legal Studies, Ernakulam Medical College, and the Cochin University of Science and Technology.

Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) is a state government-owned autonomous university in Kochi, Kerala, India. It was founded in 1971 and has three campuses: two in Kochi (Kalamassery and Ernakulam) and one in Kuttanad, Alappuzha, 66 km (41 mi) inland. The university awards degrees in engineering and science at the undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels.The university was founded in 1971 as the University of Cochin through an act of the Kerala Legislature, which was the result of a campaign for postgraduate education in the state. It was renamed as Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) in February 1986. The university has academic links and exchange programmes with several institutions across the globe.A new species of amphipod collected from the Cochin backwaters was named Victoriopisa cusatensis after the university in 2018. The motto of the university is Tejasvinavadhithamastu, which is taken from the Vedas and conveys "May the wisdom accrued deify us both – the teacher and the taught - and percolate to the universe in its totality".
