Schoenfels

Schoenfels Castle (Luxembourgish: Schlass Schëndels; French: Château de Schoenfels), with a history dating back to the 12th century, is one of the castles belonging to the Valley of the Seven Castles in central Luxembourg. Located in the village of Schoenfels in the Mamer Valley between Kopstal and Mersch, it now belongs to the State of Luxembourg.

The Valley of the Seven Castles (Luxembourgish: Dall vun de siwe Schlässer; French: Vallée des sept châteaux) is an informal name given to the Äischdall, the valley of the Eisch river, in central Luxembourg. The valley stretches from the confluence with the Alzette upstream to Steinfort, on the border with Belgium. The entire route can be traversed in about an hour by car, starting near the town of Arlon on the Belgian/Luxembourg border. There is also a 37-kilometre footpath that takes hikers along the valley and past the castles.It is named after the group of seven castles that line its route. Mersch is a canton in the centre of Luxembourg. It is the only canton, other than Luxembourg, to be entirely surrounded by other cantons, and therefore not to have an international boundary. Its capital is Mersch.

The Gousselerbierg Tunnel is a pair of parallel road tunnels in the canton of Mersch, in central Luxembourg. The tunnels are named for the hill through which they pass, near the town of Gosseldange, in the commune of Lintgen. At 2,695 metres (8,842 ft), the Gousselerbierg Tunnel is the second-longest tunnel in the country, after the Grouft Tunnel, at 2,950 metres (9,678 ft).The tunnel carries the A7 motorway, and is the first of three major tunnels on the route of the road, together with the Grouft Tunnel and the Stafelter Tunnel (1,850 m). Each of the twin tunnels contains two lanes of traffic in one direction. At its maximum, the tunnel lies 115 metres (377 ft) below the surface of the hill.The tunnel was constructed using the New Austrian Tunnelling method, relying on the stress of the surrounding rock to stabilise the tunnel. Preparatory work on the tunnel began on 17 April 2000, and drilling work began on 21 November of the same year. The breakthrough ceremony was held on 12 December 2002, with Grand Duke Henri detonating the explosive charge that connected the two ends of the tunnels. Altogether, the tunnel cost €100m to construct, and 420,000 m³ (14.8m cu ft) of earth were excavated, 65% of which was removed by explosives.

Lintgen railway station (Luxembourgish: Gare Lëntgen, French: Gare de Lintgen, German: Bahnhof Lintgen) is a railway station serving Lintgen, in central Luxembourg. It is operated by Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois, the state-owned railway company. The station is situated on Line 10, which connects Luxembourg City to the centre and north of the country.

Gosseldange (Luxembourgish: Gousseldeng, German: Gosseldingen) is a small town in the commune of Lintgen, in central Luxembourg. As of 2001, the town has a population of 442. Near to the town of Gosseldange is the Gousselerbierg, under which passes the Gousselerbierg Tunnel, the second-longest tunnel in Luxembourg.

Rollingen (Luxembourgish: Rolleng) is a town in the commune of Mersch, in central Luxembourg. As of 2005, the town has a population of 1,200. The painter Corneille Lentz was born here. Moreover, Rollingen is the hometown of the pro-cyclist Bob Jungels.

The Mamer is a river flowing through Luxembourg, joining the Alzette at Mersch. It flows through the towns of Mamer and Kopstal. The river is an indirect tributary to the river Moselle.

Lintgen (Luxembourgish: Lëntgen) is a commune and small town in central Luxembourg, in the canton of Mersch. It is situated on the river Alzette. As of 2005, the town of Lintgen, which lies in the west of the commune, has a population of 1,686. The number of inhabitants keeps on increasing, therefore ten years later, in 2015 there are approximately 2,798 people living in Lintgen. Another town within the commune is Gosseldange.

The district of Mersch was one of the four districts of Luxembourg between 1857 and 1867. It took its name from its administrative centre, the town of Mersch, and contained the cantons of Mersch and Redange. It is the only district to have been created after the initial establishment, and was the only district to have been abolished before they all were in 2015. The district was created on 30 May 1857. The canton of Mersch was taken from Luxembourg District, whilst Redange canton was taken from Diekirch District. However, this fourth district was abolished only ten years later, on 4 May 1867; the 1857 law was repealed, and the previous three districts were recreated as before. Mersch (French pronunciation: [mɛʁʃ], German pronunciation: [mɛʁʃ]; Luxembourgish: Miersch [ˈmiːɐ̯ʃ] ) is a commune and town in central Luxembourg, capital of the canton of Mersch. It is situated at the confluence of the rivers Alzette, Mamer and Eisch. As of 2023, the town of Mersch, which lies in the centre of the commune, has a population of 5,093. Other towns within the commune include Beringen, Berschbach, Moesdorf, Pettingen, Reckange, Rollingen, and Schoenfels. Mersch is the home of the National Literature Centre, Luxembourg's national literary archive. The town is the site of one of the six regional headquarters of the Grand Ducal Police. Mersch Castle is one of the castles belonging to the Valley of the Seven Castles. Located in the centre of the town, its history goes back to the 13th century. Today the castle houses the administrative offices of the local commune.Some 3 kilometres (2 mi) north of Mersch, Pettingen Castle in the village of Pettingen is one of the best preserved fortified castles in the country.
