Reckange

The district of Mersch was one of the four districts of Luxembourg between 1857 and 1867. It took its name from its administrative centre, the town of Mersch, and contained the cantons of Mersch and Redange. It is the only district to have been created after the initial establishment, and was the only district to have been abolished before they all were in 2015. The district was created on 30 May 1857. The canton of Mersch was taken from Luxembourg District, whilst Redange canton was taken from Diekirch District. However, this fourth district was abolished only ten years later, on 4 May 1867; the 1857 law was repealed, and the previous three districts were recreated as before. Mersch (French pronunciation: [mɛʁʃ], German pronunciation: [mɛʁʃ]; Luxembourgish: Miersch [ˈmiːɐ̯ʃ] ) is a commune and town in central Luxembourg, capital of the canton of Mersch. It is situated at the confluence of the rivers Alzette, Mamer and Eisch. As of 2023, the town of Mersch, which lies in the centre of the commune, has a population of 5,093. Other towns within the commune include Beringen, Berschbach, Moesdorf, Pettingen, Reckange, Rollingen, and Schoenfels. Mersch is the home of the National Literature Centre, Luxembourg's national literary archive. The town is the site of one of the six regional headquarters of the Grand Ducal Police. Mersch Castle is one of the castles belonging to the Valley of the Seven Castles. Located in the centre of the town, its history goes back to the 13th century. Today the castle houses the administrative offices of the local commune.Some 3 kilometres (2 mi) north of Mersch, Pettingen Castle in the village of Pettingen is one of the best preserved fortified castles in the country.

The Mamer is a river flowing through Luxembourg, joining the Alzette at Mersch. It flows through the towns of Mamer and Kopstal. The river is an indirect tributary to the river Moselle.

The Eisch (Luxembourgish: Äisch pronounced [æːɪʃ] ) is a river flowing through Belgium and Luxembourg, joining the Alzette on its left in Mersch. It flows through the towns of Eischen, Hobscheid, Septfontaines, and Marienthal. It has several sources near the villages of Sélange (Belgium) and Clemency (Luxembourg). The Luxembourgish part of the Eisch is informally known as the 'Valley of the Seven Castles', for the seven castles that line its route.

Mersch railway station (Luxembourgish: Gare Miersch, French: Gare de Mersch, German: Bahnhof Mersch) is a railway station serving Mersch, in central Luxembourg. It is operated by Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois, the state-owned railway company. The station is situated on Line 10, which connects Luxembourg City to the centre and north of the country.

Pettingen Castle (Luxembourgish: Waasserbuerg Pëtten; French: Château de Pettange) is located in the village of Pettingen some 4 km north of Mersch in central Luxembourg. It is one of the best preserved fortified castles in the country.

Rollingen (Luxembourgish: Rolleng) is a town in the commune of Mersch, in central Luxembourg. As of 2005, the town has a population of 1,200. The painter Corneille Lentz was born here. Moreover, Rollingen is the hometown of the pro-cyclist Bob Jungels.

Berschbach (Luxembourgish: Bierschbech) is a village in the commune of Mersch, in central Luxembourg. As of 2001, the village had a population of 150.

Pettingen (Luxembourgish: Pëtten) is a village in the commune of Mersch, in central Luxembourg. In 2005, the village had a population of 198. Pettingen Castle in the center of the village is one of the best-preserved fortified castles in the country.

Moesdorf (Luxembourgish: Miesdref) is a small town in the commune of Mersch, in central Luxembourg. As of 2005, the town has a population of 335.

Beringen (Luxembourgish: Biereng) is a small town in the commune of Mersch, in central Luxembourg. As of 2001, the town had a population of 930. It is situated approximately 16 km (10 mi) from the capital city of Luxembourg, as the crow flies.
