Hallowell Powder House

Hallowell is a city in Kennebec County, Maine, United States. The population was 2,570 at the 2020 census. Popular with tourists, Hallowell is noted for its culture and old architecture. Hallowell is included in the Augusta, Maine, micropolitan New England City and Town Area.

The Maine Industrial School for Girls, also once known as the Stevens School and the State School for Girls in Hallowell, is a former juvenile detention and education facility on Winthrop Street in Hallowell, Maine. The school operated from its founding in 1874 until the mid-1970s. Its campus, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, housed a variety of state offices, and a state Department of Corrections pre-release center until 2003 when the state put the complex up for sale and began moving offices off campus. The site remained unsold until 2016, when it was purchased by Mastway Development, LLC of Winthrop, Maine. Since then the main building has been completely renovated to serve as a 36 bed student dormitory for the University of Maine at Augusta which opened in August 2019.

St. Matthew's Episcopal Church is an Episcopal Church at 20 Union Street in Hallowell, Maine. The church was built in 1860, and is part of the Hallowell Historic District defined in the National Register of Historic Places.

Elm Hill Farm is a historic farm property on Litchfield Road in Hallowell, Maine. Its centerpiece is the Merrick Cottage, built in 1799 by one Hallowell's first colonial settlers, which is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the city. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.

The Hallowell Historic District encompasses the historic 18th and 19th-century heart of Hallowell, Maine. The city developed as a major port on the Kennebec River, during which time its downtown and adjacent residential area were built up. Fully half of the area's more than 400 buildings were built before 1865. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.

The Hubbard Free Library is the public library serving Hallowell, Maine. Built in 1879-80, it is the oldest library building in Maine built for that purpose. It was designed by architect Alexander C. Currier to resemble an English country church. Dedicated in 1880 as the Hallowell Library, it was renamed the Hubbard Free Library in 1894, after a $20,000 donation from philanthropist Thomas Hubbard. The building is a contributing property in the Hallowell Historic District.

The Row House is a historic multiunit tenement house at 106-114 2nd Street in downtown Hallowell, Maine. Built in 1840, it is one of a small number of row houses built in 19th-century Maine, and is believed to be the oldest built of wood. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.

Vaughan Woods & Historic Homestead is a non-profit nature preserve and historic house museum in Hallowell, Maine. The trails of Vaughan Woods are open to the public daily from dawn to dusk. They may be accessed via two designated trailhead and parking areas. The Hallowell trailhead does not have a street address, but is easily located at the corner of Litchfield Road and Middle Street. The Farmingdale trailhead is behind the Hall-Dale High School tennis courts at 97 Maple Street. Access to the Homestead and gardens is restricted unless a public program is in session.

Bank of Maine Ice Vault is an indoor ice arena located in Hallowell, Maine. It is the home of the Maine Moose ice hockey team which plays in the Northern States Junior Hockey League, and the Skating Association of Maine. The arena stands on the site of a prior arena, called the Kennebec Ice Arena. It was built in 1973 and collapsed under the weight of snow on March 2, 2011.The Maine Moose played their first home game in the new arena against the New York Aviators on October 19, 2012.

The Maine State Museum is the official Maine government's museum and is located at 230 State Street, adjacent to the Maine State House, in Augusta. Its collections focus on the state's pre-history, history, and natural science. Permanent exhibits include dioramas of Maine's animals, birds and plants in different ecosystems; gems and minerals; displays about the state's natural resources and industries, including forestry, granite, fishing, and agriculture; Clovis culture and archaeological artifacts; and settlement and state history. There is also a working three-story water-powered woodworking mill, and craftsmen's work areas. The current director of the Museum is Bernard Fishman.
