Sørnes Church

Sørnes is a village in Sola municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. The village is located at the southeastern end of the Hafrsfjorden, about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) southwest of the city of Stavanger. The village is a part of the larger Stavanger/Sandnes metropolitan area. The village lies just west of the European route E39 highway and just a short distance north of the village of Solakrossen.A large proportion of the population commutes to work in nearby Stavanger. The village is named after the old Sørnes farm (Old Norse: Suđrnes). The first element is suđr which means "southern" and the last element is nes which means "headland".

Ytraberget is a small peninsula that sticks out into the Hafrsfjord in the municipality of Sola in Rogaland county, Norway. Ytraberget is connected to Indraberget and it is located, just north of the village of Sørnes, between two small bays: Sørnesvågen and Grannesvågen. Harald Fairhair (ca. 865-ca. 933) fought the Battle of Hafrsfjord during 872 AD. In the Saga by Snorri Sturluson, a little isle is mentioned as the location where Kjotve the Rich fled the battle. The little isle is commonly held to have been Ytraberget, although it is now connected by a low isthmus of some 2 metres (6 ft 7 in) in elevation to Indraberget. It is thought that the Earth's crust rebounding post glaciation over 1,100 years has exposed the connection between the two. On the top of the hill, there is a plateau about 100 by 50 metres (330 ft × 160 ft). This is the area of the Bronze Age stone fortifications (bygdeborg). There are three or four buildings that were a part of the ruined structure, all about 8 by 5 metres (26 ft × 16 ft). Near the top of Ytraberget there is a stone slab monument erected in 1972 near the ruins for the 1,100-year anniversary of the Battle of Hafrsfjord. There are good fishing and swimming possibilities at Ytraberget. Ytraberget today is a very common swimming spot for local teenagers.Indraberget is the mainland area that Ytreberget connects to. This area has some of the richest limestone flora in this part of Norway. There is also rich archeological findings for the Stone Age, Bronze Age and to modern times.

Gausel is a neighborhood (delområde) in the city of Stavanger which lies in the southwestern part of the large municipality of Stavanger in Rogaland county, Norway. It is located in the borough of Hinna between the neighborhoods of Jåttå, Godeset, and Forus and the Gandsfjorden.

Stokkavatnet is a former lake that was located at Forus in Stavanger, Norway, between the two fjords Hafrsfjord and Gandsfjord. The lake was among the largest at the Northern Jæren district, with an area of about 4 km2. It was surrounded by considerable areas of marsh land, and was known for a rich birdlife. The lake drained to Gandsfjord, and the outlet supplied six mills located near the fjord.

The Battle of Hafrsfjord (Norwegian: Slaget i Hafrsfjord) was a great naval battle fought in Hafrsfjord sometime between 872 and 900 that resulted in the unification of Norway, later known as the Kingdom of Norway. After the battle, the victorious Viking chief Harald Fairhair proclaimed himself the first king of the Norwegians, merging several petty kingdoms under a single monarch for the first time.

Sverd i fjell (English: Swords in Rock) is a commemorative monument located in the Hafrsfjord neighborhood of Madla, a borough of the city of Stavanger which lies in the southwestern part of the large municipality of Stavanger in Rogaland county, Norway.

Madlamark Church (Norwegian: Madlamark kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in the southern part of the large Stavanger Municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. It is located in the Madlamark neighborhood in the borough of Madla in the western part of the city of Stavanger. It is the church for the Madlamark parish which is part of the Ytre Stavanger prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Stavanger. The large, brick church was built in a fan-shaped design in 1976 using designs by the architect Toralf Kaada. The church seats about 600 people.

Stavanger Peninsula (Norwegian: Stavangerhalvøya) is a peninsula in Rogaland County, Norway. The peninsula is named for the city of Stavanger, located on its northeastern shore and it includes the most populous parts of the Greater Stavanger urban area. The peninsula extends from a line between the Sandnes harbour at the southern end of the Gandsfjorden straight west to the village of Ølbør in Sola municipality. This line runs just south of Stavanger Airport. The peninsula is delimited by the Gandsfjorden, Boknafjorden, Byfjorden, and the North Sea. Stavanger Peninsula includes Randaberg municipality, as well as parts of Stavanger, Sandnes, and Sola municipalities.The name Stavanger Peninsula is occasionally used interchangeably with North Jæren (Norwegian: Nord-Jæren), but the former is a geographical region, while the latter is a political definition.

Madla is a former municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. The 15.75-square-kilometre (6.08 sq mi) municipality existed from 1930 until 1965 when it was merged into Stavanger Municipality. The small municipality now exists as the borough of Madla inside the city of Stavanger, on the northeast side of the Hafrsfjorden. It was one of the smallest municipalities in Rogaland county, with only four farms: Malde (now spelled Madla), Revheim, and North- and South-Sunde. The municipal centre was located at Malde, now known as Madlamark.

The University of Stavanger (Norwegian: Universitetet i Stavanger, UiS) is a public research university located in Stavanger, Norway. It was established in 2005 when the Stavanger University College received university status. The university is organised in six faculties. In 2022 it had 12,506 students and 2,200 employees including academics, administrative and service staff. In 2024 it had a budget of just under two billion NOK, which corresponds to roughly $190 million.

The UiS Business School (Norwegian: Handelshøyskolen ved UiS) is a business school situated in Stavanger, Norway, and a faculty under the University of Stavanger. The business school is one of the largest institutions in Norway educating students at the masters level in business administration.

Hafrsfjord or Hafrsfjorden is a fjord in the Stavanger Peninsula in Rogaland county, Norway. The 9-kilometre (5.6 mi) long fjord forms the border between the municipalities of Stavanger and Sola. On the west side of the fjord is the large village of Tananger, on the south is the village of Solakrossen, and on the east end of the fjord is the borough of Madla in the city of Stavanger. The Møllebukta bay area, located on the innermost part of the fjord, is the site of a popular beach and the Sverd i Fjell statues. The only bridge over the fjord is the Hafrsfjord Bridge which runs between Kvernevik in Stavanger and Jåsund in the village of Tananger in Sola. Hafrsfjord is also the name of a neighbourhood (delområde) in the borough of Madla in the city of Stavanger. It has a population of 4,003, distributed on an area of 5.78 square kilometres (2.23 sq mi). Hafrsfjord is also the location of the KNM Harald Hårfagre, the Basic Training Establishment for the Royal Norwegian Navy. The camp had been used for military purposes since 1871 and in 1934 it was renamed Madlaleiren. In 1952, Parliament decided that the Navy's boot camp would be added to the camp and also that the Navy would formally take over the camp. Three years later, the camp was named KNM Harald Hårfagre. Today KNM Harald Hårfagre is the principal training camp for both the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force. Officer Candidate School for the Navy moved the intake and basic education from Horten to KNM Harald Hårfagre during the summer of 2005.
