San Domenico, Palermo

Piazza San Domenico is a square of Palermo, Sicily, southern Italy. It is located down Via Roma, in the quarter of La Loggia, within the historic centre of Palermo. The square derives its name from the Church of San Domenico, one of the famous city sights. In the past it was called "Piazza Imperiale" (Imperial Square), because its creation was decided by the Emperor Charles VI.The middle of the square is dominated by the Column of the Immaculate Conception, designed by Tommaso Napoli in 1724 and erected by Giovanni Biagio Amico in 1728. The former Dominican convent overlooking the square is the location of the Museo del Risorgimento. Moreover, the square represents an entrance of the La Vucciria, one of the historical markets of Palermo.

The Colonna dell'Immacolata Concezione is a monumental sculpture, whose centerpiece is a bronze statue of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception atop a column, erected in 1631 on Piazza San Domenico in Palermo, Sicily. The monument, which stands in front of the church of San Domenico is also referred to as the Colonna di San Domenico or Monumento all'Immacolata. The 18th-century monument falls within the tradition for example, of the guglia or spire monuments common to Naples.

The Oratory of the Rosary of Saint Dominic (Italian: Oratorio del Rosario di San Domenico) is a Baroque oratory of Palermo. It is located near the Church of Saint Dominic, in the quarter of the Loggia, within the historic centre of Palermo. The oratory was founded in 1574. In the early 18th century Giacomo Serpotta realized a sumptuous stucco decoration. Moreover, the oratory is decorated with several paintings of important artists like Matthias Stom; Guglielmo Borremans; Geronimo Gerardi (a Nativity); Pietro Novelli; Valerio Castello; and Luca Giordano. The most prominent painting is the main altarpiece by Anthony van Dyck, depicting the Madonna of the Rosary with the saints Dominic, Catherine of Siena, Vincent Ferrer, Olivia, Nympha, Agatha, Christina and Rosalia. The painting was commissioned to Van Dyck during the period of the 1624 plague.

The Church of the Immaculate Conception (Italian: Chiesa dell'Immacolata Concezione or Immacolata Concezione al Capo) is a Baroque church of Palermo. It is located on the busy streets composing the markets of the Capo, in the quarter of the Seralcadio, within the historic centre of Palermo. This monastic church is on via Porta Carini, across the street from the parish church of Sant'Ippolito. It was built between 1604 and 1740 and is finely decorated with many works of Sicilian artists like Giacomo Amato, Pietro Novelli, Olivio Sòzzi, Giuseppe Velasco and Carlo D'Aprile.

Via Roma is an important street of Palermo. It represents one of the main axes of the historic centre and connect the Palermo Centrale railway station to the Teatro Politeama. Several important buildings of the city appears along the street's path. Via Roma was designed with the 1885 Master Plan of Palermo (the so-called "Piano Giarrusso") and built between 1894 and 1936.

Diagonally across Via Roma is the ancient church of Sant'Antonio Abate and a stairwell descending into the warrens of the Vucciria Market.

The Oratorio del Rosario di Santa Cita is a Baroque chapel or prayer room located in the quarter of the Castellamare within the historic center of Palermo, region of Sicily, Italy. The site is best known for the remarkable stucco tableaux scenes composed during 1687-1718 by Giacomo Serpotta.

La Vucciria is an ancient, large market or bazaar area and neighborhood, with shops and tables selling products, produce, and foodstuffs located in the ancient quarter of Castellammare of central Palermo, region of Sicily, Italy. It consists of numerous pedestrian alleys and small piazzas in a crowded urban setting, is generally bounded to the North by the church and piazza of San Domenico, to the West by Via Roma, Palermo, and to the South by Via Vittorio Emanuele. Despite the dilapidated buildings and graffiti, the bustling spectacle of hawkers vociferously proffering their wares and the many food and drink establishments and dives, often open till late at night, are a draw for tourism in Palermo.

Sant'Antonio Abate (Saint'Antony Abbot) is a Gothic-style Roman Catholic parish church located on Via Roma #203A in the ancient quarter of Castellammare, in central Palermo, region of Sicily, Italy. The church sits at the west corner of the Vucciria market.

Santa Cita, reconsecrated in 1952 as San Mamiliano, is a baroque-style, Roman Catholic parish church located on Via Squarcialupo, 1, in the quarter of Castellammare of the city of Palermo, Sicily, Italy. The church and its artworks suffered heavily the bombardment during the Second World War, but it still contains original works and is attached to the Oratory of the Rosary of Santa Cita and less than a block north of the church of Santa Maria di Valverde.

Santa Sofia dei Tavernieri is a former oratory or small church building located in central Palermo, region of Sicily, Italy. It is located just off the main street of the city, the ancient Cassaro now Corso Vittorio Emanuele, in the quarter of the Loggia. About a block and a half east of Via Roma, to the north opens a narrow vicolo Mezzani, off which a few meters in opens the vicolo Santa Sofia, opening to a small piazza with the ruins of the facade of the church. This small church was commissioned by the a Lombard confraternity of Tavernieri (inn-keepers). Initially meeting in the church of the Crocifisso, in the Albergheria, In 1589, they bought land at this site, and erected first a chapel, enlarging it in 1606 with the site of an adjacent house. Over the years, the site became little utilized, including when it became part of a confraternity of the injured victims of war. An allied aerial bomb in 1943 left the site in ruins. Despite claims of restoration, it remains a ruin.
