Madeleine (Paris Métro)

The Madeleine bombing was a bomb attack carried out on 15 March 1894 by the anarchist militant Désiré Pauwels at the Madeleine church, facing the French National Assembly in Paris. The attack occurred during the latter half of the Era of Attacks (1892–1894) and aimed to strike a symbol of the Catholic Church and one of the principal churches of the Parisian bourgeoisie. Pauwels arrived at the church but detonated his bomb prematurely at the entrance before he could position it. He died shortly afterward from a gunshot wound to the head, possibly self-inflicted as he would have attempted suicide to avoid capture by police. No other casualties or injuries were reported, though the church sustained damage and required restoration. This bombing, along with other attacks during the Era of Attacks, marked an early shift in terrorist strategy: instead of targeting specific individuals, it focused on symbolic locations—in this case, the Madeleine church as a stand-in for a precise human target. This shift became a hallmark of modern terrorism but was poorly understood by contemporary media, which dismissed the attack as a senseless act without grasping its ideological motivations. The French press reacted with disgust and scorn, ignoring Pauwels' courage or resolve. The incident also highlights the growing role of forensic science in criminal investigations. Pauwels’ body was so severely disfigured and mutilated by the explosion that it became unrecognizable, necessitating identification by forensic experts—who successfully confirmed his identity.

The Church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine (French: L'église Sainte-Marie-Madeleine), or less formally, La Madeleine, is a Catholic parish church on Place de la Madeleine in the 8th arrondissement of Paris. It was planned by Louis XV as the focal point of the new Rue Royal, leading to the new Place Louis XV, the present Place de la Concorde. It was dedicated in 1764 by Louis XV, but work halted due to the French Revolution. Napoleon Bonaparte had it redesigned in the Neoclassical style to become a monument to the glory of his armies. After his downfall in 1814 construction as a church resumed, but it was not completed until 1842. The building is surrounded on all four sides by columns in the Corinthian style. The interior is noted for its frescoes on the domed ceiling, and monumental sculptures by François Rude, Charles Marochetti and other prominent 19th-century French artists.The exterior and interior of the church are undergoing a major project of cleaning and restoration, which began in 2020 and is scheduled for completion in 2023.

The Lavatory Madeleine is a public toilet on Place de la Madeleine (next to La Madeleine) in the 8th arrondissement of Paris, France. Built in 1905, it was built to showcase a new type of underground public toilet. It was the first of its kind in France, and the most luxurious. Inspiration came from London, were underground public toilets had existed since 1889. Lavatory Madeleine was lavishly decorated in the Art Nouveau style, and equipped with a range of toilet options in different price classes. Some modifications were made in the 1930s and 50s, and notably in the 1980s when the men's section was closed and transformed into a service area for telecommunications. In 1989-1990 a first restoration was carried out, but the establishment was closed to the public in 2011. Continuous problems with water penetrating the ceiling prompted a complete restoration in 2022–2023, with the aim of restoring the public toilet to its former glory. The establishment is today run by an association and is open to visitors for a fee. It is a designated monument historique (national heritage site).

The Pinacothèque de Paris (French: [pinakɔtɛk də paʁi]) was an art gallery in Paris, France, with exhibition space for temporary exhibitions of artworks. It was owned and run by Modigliani enthusiast Marc Restellini. It closed in 15 February 2016 after going into receivership in November 2015.

Porte Saint-Honoré was a city gate in Paris. It was the main entry point into the city from the west, towards Saint-Germain-en-Laye (with porte Saint-Denis to the north towards Saint-Denis, porte Saint-Antoine to the east towards Vincennes, and porte Saint-Jacques to the south towards Orléans). There were three gates that bore the name, demolished rebuilt further and further along rue Saint-Honoré as the city expanded - they dated to the early 13th, late 14th and early 17th centuries.

The Hôtel de Pourtalès is a historic hôtel particulier, a type of large townhouse of France, at 7 rue Tronchet in the 8th arrondissement of Paris. It was designed by architect Félix Duban and built in 1839 for James-Alexandre de Pourtalès, a Swiss-born banker and art collector. It has been listed as an official historical monument since September 17, 2002.The building is now operated as a luxurious apartment hotel. In October 2016, reality TV personality Kim Kardashian said that she was held at gunpoint and robbed of valuable jewelry by a group of assailants who gained access to her suite in the building.

The Boulevard de la Madeleine is one of the four 'grands boulevards' of Paris, France, a chain of roads running east–west that includes the boulevard de la Madeleine, the boulevard des Capucines, the boulevard des Italiens and the boulevard Montmartre. The boulevard is named after the nearby Église de la Madeleine.

The rue Royale (French pronunciation: ​[ʁy ʁwajal]) is a short street in Paris, France, running between the Place de la Concorde and the Place de la Madeleine (site of the Church of the Madeleine). The rue Royale is in the city's 8th arrondissement. Among the well-known addresses on this street is that of Maxim's restaurant, at number 3. On 12 August 1843, the rue Royale was the scene for a bizarre phenomenon, when tens of thousands of butterflies landed, causing chaos and swarming the shops and restaurants. The pillars of the Madeleine were, reportedly, "covered".

King Edward VII of Great Britain referred to Cartier as "the jeweller of kings and the king of jewellers." For his coronation in 1902, Edward VII ordered 27 tiaras and issued a royal warrant to Cartier in 1904. Similar warrants soon followed from the courts of Spain, Portugal, Serbia, Russia and the House of Orléans.

Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption is a Roman Catholic church in the First arrondissement of Paris, France. The building was constructed between 1670 and 1676 when it was consecrated. Since 1844 it has been the main Polish church of Paris, situated at 263, Rue Saint-Honoré.

The Musée Bouilhet-Christofle was a private museum located in the 8th arrondissement at 9, rue Royale, Paris, France. The museum's main collection was located in a Parisian suburb at 112, rue Ambroise Croizat, Saint-Denis, France. The museum closed in 2008.The Maison Christofle was founded in 1845 by Charles Christofle (1805-1863), and became silversmith to Napoleon III and one of the major silversmiths in nineteenth-century France. The museum contained more than 2000 items of silver plate and cutlery reflecting the company's history from its founding to the present day. It contained examples of naturalism, Orientalism, Japonism, Art Nouveau, items produced for the universal expositions, Art Deco, etc., and documents a wide range of techniques including electroplating, enameling, and so forth. It also contained displays on the history of silver production, table settings, and table manners.

The J12 is a line of Swiss made luxury watches manufactured by French Haute Couture house Chanel, founded by Gabrielle Chanel in 1909. The J12 was launched in 1999 and is considered as a unisex watch. The watch was designed by the artistic director of the house, Jacques Hélleu, who found inspiration in the two worlds he loved most: automobiles and sailing. Chanel uses highly scratch-resistant ceramic for the watch's case and bracelet. Other materials are used as well, such as titanium and for one of the house's limited edition watches, sapphires were used to create the entirety of the bracelet and case.
