Nelson (Māori: Whakatū) is a New Zealand city on the eastern shores of Tasman Bay at the top of the South Island. It is the oldest city in the South Island and the second-oldest settled city in New Zealand; it was established in 1841 and became a city by royal charter in 1858.Nelson City is bordered to the west and south-west by the Tasman District and to the north-east, east and south-east by the Marlborough District. The Nelson urban area has a population of 51,900, making it New Zealand's 15th most populous urban area. Nelson is well known for its thriving local arts and crafts scene; each year, the city hosts events popular with locals and tourists alike, such as the Nelson Arts Festival.

The Diocese of Nelson is one of the 13 dioceses and hui amorangi (Māori bishoprics) of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia. The Diocese covers the northern part of the South Island of New Zealand, which is mostly the area north of a line drawn from Greymouth to Kaikōura. The Diocese was founded in 1858 and the seat of the Bishop is at Christ Church Cathedral in Nelson. On 31 August 2019 Stephen Maina-Mwangi was ordained and installed as Bishop of Nelson. Nelson Diocese is a noted Evangelical diocese, drawing similarities with the Anglican Diocese of Sydney, in Australia.

The Nelson Provincial Museum, Pupuri Taonga O Te Tai Ao is a regional museum in the city of Nelson, New Zealand. The museum showcases the Nelson and Tasman regions' history, from geological origins to the stories of individuals and families.Nelson Provincial Museum holds over 1.4 million items of interest, collected during the past 160 years. Exhibitions are shown in a modern building that opened in 2005, costing NZ$5 million, funded by the community, private and public benefactors, the Nelson City Council, Tasman District Council and central government. The collections, professional staff and public research services are housed in the former museum building, which is located in Isel Park, Stoke.

Trafalgar Park is a sports ground located beside the Central Business District of Nelson, in New Zealand's South Island. The stadium has a capacity of 18,000, following upgrades completed for the 2011 Rugby World Cup. It takes its name from its location on Trafalgar Street.

The Maitai River (also known as the Mahitahi River) is the largest river in the city of Nelson, in the north of New Zealand's South Island. The river stretches from the Bryant Range, situated to the east (inland) of Nelson, where it flows towards the city, flowing west through the heart of the city and into the Tasman bay at Nelson Haven. The catchment of the river covers some 9000 hectares, and has two branches in the upper catchment, the north meets a dam, where the south travels west into the middle catchment, from where it takes its final journey through the urban area of the city before meeting the ocean.The Maitai river provides habitats for a plethora of diverse wildlife, at all catchments of the river and its surrounding ecosystems. This sees that many species of bird, fish, mammals and reptiles use the river as both a home and a source of food and drinking water, as well as for extensive amounts of vegetation to grow around the abundant water-source. There has also been discoveries of unique life in the Maitai River as well as surrounding rivers in the Nelson region.Social and leisure uses for the river range from walking trails to swimming holes, where either the river's water that meets the city is used by the population, or its inhabitants walk upstream towards a less urbanised section of the river. Walking trails cover majority of the entrance of the river to the city, creating a source of exercise for the residents of Nelson and surrounding homes. There are also tourist and leisure spots and activities that use the river.The river is also utilised by the council and government in more economic and resource management ways, where a dam and reservoir has been placed on the river as well as the water from the river is used to supply the neighbouring city of Nelson with water. The river is also used as a storm-water channel and flood channel for Nelson City.

The Rutherford Hotel (named after Sir Ernest Rutherford) is a luxury accommodation hotel in Nelson, New Zealand. It is the biggest hotel in Nelson and the city's tallest building. It is part of the chain company Heritage Hotels, which have hotels based in many locations around New Zealand.

Radio Nelson was a New Zealand radio station in Nelson. The station was started by Radio New Zealand (which at the time was known as the New Zealand Broadcasting Board) in 1932. The station originally broadcast on 1340AM with the callsign 2ZR. The station changed call signs to 2YN followed by 2XN and finally 2ZN. In 1978 the AM band in New Zealand was adjusted from 10 kHz to 9 kHz, as a result 2ZN moved to 1341AM. Originally the station was branded by its callsign name and did not become known as Radio Nelson until the 1980s. In 1985 Radio Nelson began broadcasting in Tākaka on 1269AM with the call sign 2ZT. Radio Nelson began broadcasting on 89.8FM in 1992 (around the same time as opposition station Fifeshire FM) as well as on the existing AM frequencies. In 1993 Radio New Zealand rebranded many of their heritage stations as Classic Hits. For Radio Nelson the station became known as Classic Hits 90FM. Around the same a company called Radio Nelson Limited was registered, it is believed that Radio Nelson was sold to this private company in 1993. At the same time Radio New Zealand was rolling out their Newstalk ZB brand across the country using the AM frequency of stations that had converted to FM. Classic Hits 90FM Nelson however continued using the AM frequency and in the mid nineties was used to run a talkback programme, this station on air was known as 1341 AM – Entertaining & Informing Nelson. The 1341 AM was eventually used for Newstalk ZB later in the 1990s. In 1995 programming was extended to the Tasman Bay and Golden Bay areas broadcasting on 90.4FM. In 1998 Classic Hits 90FM was reduced to just 4 hours of local programming between 6 and 10 am 7 days a week. Outside this time nationwide shows based from Auckland took over, and the network announcers simply called the station Classic Hits. The breakfast show was shortened to a 3-hour show in 2012. In 2002 the station was renamed to Classic Hits 89.8 & 90.4 and Classic Hits 89.8 in 2006 after the station began broadcasting only on 89.8FM. In 2006 Radio Hauraki was introduced on the 90.4FM frequency which at the time was occupied by Classic Hits, leaving Classic Hits to then broadcast only on 89.8FM. Radio Nelson Limited was struck off the New Zealand Companies Office Register in 2008. In 2010 the government realigned radio frequencies in New Zealand, which altered all FM station frequencies for both The Radio Network and Mediaworks. As a result, Classic Hits 90FM moved from 89.8FM to 89.6FM. All AM frequencies remained unchanged. In 2012, an application was made to the Companies office to register Radio Nelson as a newly incorporated company, by former Radio Network employee, Murray Leaning. This company was registered but struck off in 2013. Negotiations were apparently underway between a group of local investors and the owners of a radio frequency in the district, with a view to Radio Nelson recommencing broadcasts as a private radio station in 2014 however this did not eventuate. On 28 April 2014, all stations part of the Classic Hits network were rebranded as The Hits. A networked breakfast presented by Polly Gillespie and Grant Kareama was introduced to almost all The Hits stations with the former breakfast announcer moved to present a 6-hour show between 9 am and 3 pm. With Polly and Grant leaving The Hits in 2017 all South Island stations reverted to local breakfast programming. From 2017 Scott Radovanovich presented the breakfast show to both The Hits Nelson and The Hits Marlborough. Today, a local 9 am-3 pm show is generated from the Nelson studios, hosted by Hayden Rose.

Christ Church Cathedral is an Anglican cathedral church at 1 Trafalgar Square, Nelson, New Zealand. The cathedral serves as the seat for the Bishop of Nelson, currently Steve Maina Mwangi, and is the mother church for the Diocese of Nelson of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia. With seating for 350 people, the cathedral was completed in the Modernist Gothic Revival style, and is 58 metres (190 ft) in length and 27 metres (89 ft) wide. The tower is 35 metres (115 ft) high.

Bishopdale College is a theological college in Nelson, New Zealand. Its former dean is the now Assistant Bishop of Adelaide, Tim Harris. It opened in 1868.Eminent alumni include John Pratt Kempthorne George William York

Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) is a public tertiary education institution at the top of the South Island in New Zealand. NMIT's main campus is in Nelson with other campuses in Blenheim, Marlborough, Woodbourne and Richmond. It has been providing tertiary education in the Nelson-Marlborough region since 1904. NMIT offers 100 programmes at certificate, diploma or degree level across a broad range of areas and has a yearly enrollment of around 3,000 equivalent full-time students, locally, nationally and internationally. NMIT is an NZQA approved Category 1 tertiary education provider and ISO 9001 certified. The region's economy includes New Zealand's largest concentration of fisheries, wine and aquaculture. It also has substantial forestry, horticulture, aviation, tourism and arts industries as well as a sizable conservation estate, including three national parks. NMIT has developed programmes that sustain the region's infrastructure as well as specialized programmes in niche areas. NMIT's programmes include Viticulture, Aquaculture, Nursing, Maritime, Adventure Tourism, Creative Industries, Business and Computing. It also delivers a wide range of trade qualifications. On 1 April 2020, NMIT was subsumed into New Zealand Institute of Skills & Technology alongside the 15 other Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs).
