The place was founded in 1824 by Pietists, who wanted to emigrate overseas, but were granted by King William I of Württemberg a place, where they could settle among themselves. The place was named after the king and modelled after the settlement congregations of the Herrnhuter Bruedergemeine or Moravian Church.

Gehrenberg Tower

Gehrenberg Tower is a 30 metres tall observation tower of lattice steel on Gehrenberg, a 754 m high mountain north of Markdorf, standing at an elevation of 704 m. Gehrenberg Tower has some similarities to Eiffel Tower as it also has a bow between its feet. From the observation deck of Gehrenberg Tower, one can see at clear weather the Alps and the Höchsten mountain. Gehrenberg Tower, which carries also antennas, belongs to the town of Markdorf, although it stands on the area of Deggenhausertal.

Horgenzell

Horgenzell is a municipality in Germany with 4528 inhabitants, near Ravensburg. Horgenzell was first named in 1094. In 1972 the villages Hasenweiler, Kappel, Wolketsweiler and Zogenweiler were added to Horgenzell. In 1974 the village of Tepfenhart was added to HorgenzellAt Horgenzell, there is the Ravensburg-Horgenzell transmitter, a facility for mediumwave broadcasting.
