Museum of Science and Industry (Chicago)

Fab Lab MSI (Fabrication Laboratory at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, Illinois) is a small scale workshop that uses various machines to create both prototypes for individuals and small projects for museum members and visitors. The idea behind the Fab Lab is to be able to learn how to use various machines to build "almost anything". The lab is located in the innovations (the ball enterprise) section of the museum, next to the Toymaker 3000 . This Fab Lab is part of 34 other Fab Labs found in 10 countries, all of which started in the Media Lab at MIT. These labs are all interconnected, although the idea is for each lab to become independent yet keeping with the same concepts and ideas. The equipment found in the Fab Lab at MSI includes: Laser cutter - sheet material cutting Modela milling machines - 3-d milling and scanning machine CNC machine - computer-controlled mills, lathes, etc. Computer labs - computers equipped with various software for any lab project as well as conference calling Vinyl cutting machines - used to cut and create vinyl projects Electrical stations - stations with electrical equipment (anything from circuit boards, resistors and LED lights to solar panels and small LCD screens)

U-505 is a German Type IXC submarine built for Germany's Kriegsmarine during World War II. She was captured by the U.S. Navy on 4 June 1944. In her uniquely unlucky career with the Kriegsmarine, she had the distinction of being the "most heavily damaged U-boat to successfully return to port" in World War II on her fourth patrol, and the only submarine in which a commanding officer killed himself in combat conditions on her tenth patrol, following six botched patrols. She was captured on 4 June 1944 by United States Navy Task Group 22.3 (TG 22.3), one of six U-boats that were captured at sea by Allied forces during World War II. All but one of U-505's crew were rescued by the Navy task group. The submarine was towed to Bermuda in secret and her crew was interned at a US prisoner of war camp, where they were kept in isolation. The Navy classified the capture as top secret and went to great lengths to prevent the Germans from discovering it. In 1954, U-505 was donated to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, Illinois. She is now one of four German World War II U-boats that survive as museum ships, and just one of two Type IXCs still in existence with U-534.

The Idaho Building for the 1893 Chicago World's Fair was a rustic-design log construction designed by architect Kirtland Cutter. It was a popular favorite, visited by an estimated 18 million people. The building's design and interior furnishings were a major precursor of the Arts and Crafts movement. The structure stood on the extreme north line of Jackson Park, over a mile and a half from the Forestry Building, which it recalled.

1700 East 56th Street, also known as 1700 Building, is a 38-story luxury apartment building overlooking Lake Michigan and adjacent to Jackson Park and the Museum of Science and Industry in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago in Cook County, Illinois, United States. Designed by Loewenberg Architects, its construction was completed in 1968, followed by a condominium conversion in 1994. With 369 residences, this was the largest Hyde Park condominium conversion in a decade, when a recession and soaring interest rates halted Chicago's condo conversion frenzy.This is the tallest building in Chicago south of 13th Street.The condominium conversion had five different unit designs, each named after a famous Chicago architect: The Adler, a 569-square-foot (52.9 m2) studio unit The Burnham, a 793-square-foot (73.7 m2)1-bedroom, 1-bath unit The Sullivan, a 1,166-square-foot (108.3 m2), a 2-bedroom, 2-bath unit The Mies van der Rohe, a 1,263-square-foot (117.3 m2) corner 2-bedroom, 2-bath unit the Wright, a 1,648-square-foot (153.1 m2) corner 3-bedroom, 3-bath unit

Hotel Windermere was a hotel in Hyde Park, Chicago, United States, located at 56th Street and Cornell Avenue. It was built in 1892 for the Columbian Exposition. In 1924 it was rebuilt with a West and East hotel under Rapp & Rapp, who also built the Chicago Theatre and the Tivoli Theatre. The 12-story hotel had 482 guest rooms and 200 apartments and had a tunnel connecting the two hotels. Over the years Windermere East attracted guests such as John Rockefeller, Philip Roth, George Burns and Gracie Allen, and American football teams. Windermere West was demolished in 1959 to make way for a parking lot, and in 1981 Windermere East was converted into apartments and placed on the National Register of Historic Places a year later under the title Hotel Windermere East.

The Poinsettia Apartments (also spelled the Poinsetta Apartments) are an apartment hotel at 5528 S. Hyde Park Boulevard in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. Built in 1929, the building was the last of several apartment hotels built in Hyde Park during a period of residential development in the late 1910s and 1920s. Apartment hotels were popular among wealthier workers in the city at the time, as they combined the amenities and prestige of hotels with the affordability of apartments. The Poinsettia Apartments were both the smallest of the Hyde Park apartment hotels and the only building designed in the Spanish Colonial Revival style. Its design features pilasters spanning the height of the building, terra cotta ornamentation, and decorative window surrounds on the first two floors.The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 14, 1986.

The Promontory Apartments is a 22-story skyscraper in Hyde Park, Chicago, Illinois, United States designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. It was the first skyscraper Mies designed and was the first of his buildings to feature concepts such as an exposed skeleton. The cooperative building overlooking Burnham Park has 122 units.

The Woman's Building was designed and built for the World's Columbian Exposition held in Chicago in 1893 under the auspices of the Board of Lady Managers. Of the twelve main buildings for the Exhibition, on June 30, 1892 The Woman's Building was the first to be completed. It had exhibition space as well as an assembly room, a library, and a Hall of Honor. The History of the World's Fair states, "It will be a long time before such an aggregation of woman's work, as may now be seen in the Woman's Building, can be gathered from all parts of the world again."

Solstice on the Park is a residential building in Chicago designed by architect Jeanne Gang and completed in 2018 in the Hyde Park Community area.

The Flamingo-on-the-Lake Apartments, also known as the Flamingo Apartment Hotel, is a building designed by architect William C. Reichert and located at 5500-5520 S. Shore Drive along Lake Michigan in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. The 16-story apartment building was built with 144 apartments and 16 hotel rooms in 1927; it also featured an outdoor pool and bathhouse. It was designed in the Classical Revival style; its exterior is red brick with terra cotta ornamentation and a dentillated cornice. It and the adjacent building, The Promontory Apartments, a co-op building designed by Mies van der Rohe, are the furthest east buildings in Hyde Park. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 14, 1986.

The Mayfair Apartments are a historic apartment hotel at 1650–1666 E. 56th Street in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago. Built in 1926, the building was part of a wave of residential department in Hyde Park, and it was one of several apartment hotels constructed there in the late 1910s and 1920s. Apartment hotels were popular among wealthy workers looking for part-time city housing, as they combined the amenities and prestige of a hotel with the price and location of apartments. The architecture firm Lowenberg & Lowenberg designed the building in the Georgian Revival style. The building's first three stories are clad with limestone and decorated with flat Corinthian columns and balustrades on the second-story windows. The remainder of the building is brick and includes a dentillated cornice at its roof and a second cornice above its eleventh story.The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 14, 1986.

The Jackson Shore Apartments are a historic apartment building in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. The building was built in 1916–18, at which time Hyde Park was a popular and growing neighborhood. Architects Rapp & Rapp, who were more famous for their work on theaters, designed the Classical Revival building; the style, which conveyed dignity and luxury to apartment-seekers, was a departure from their more elaborate theater designs. The eleven-and-a-half story building's design includes towers at the front corners, detailed stonework on the first floor, a bracketed stringcourse below the top floor, and a frieze above the top floor. The interior continues the classical theming with wood paneling and egg-and-dart molding. While many luxury apartment buildings were built in Hyde Park in the early 20th century, the Jackson Shore Apartments are one of the few well-preserved surviving examples.The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 12, 2010.
