The Danish Wahld (German: Dänischer Wohld, Danish: Jernved) is a peninsula in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is located between Eckernförde Bay in the north and Kiel Fjord in the south. The Amt of "Dänischer Wohld" in the district of Rendsburg-Eckernförde is named after the peninsula, but only encompasses a central part of the region. The Danish Wahld formed a border forest between German and Danish settlements in the Middle Ages with only a few Jute settlements. After 1260 the Danish Wahld was pledged by the Danish king to the north German nobility and German colonists settled in the region. The Danish Wahld was in the Middle Ages part of Denmark and after 1200 of the Danish Duchy of Schleswig, where it formed its own goods district. After the Second Schleswig War 1864 the region came to Prussia. The southern Danish Wahld is bordered by the Kiel Canal and remnants of the Eider Canal. It predominantly was composed of the older Eckernförde district, now within Rendsburg-Eckernförde. The main settlement of the region is Gettorf. Individual settlements in the southeast, such as Schilksee, Holtenau, and Friedrichsort, now are part of the city of Kiel.

Sailing/Yachting is an Olympic sport starting from the Games of the 1st Olympiad (1896 Olympics in Athens, Greece). With the exception of 1904 and the canceled 1916 Summer Olympics, sailing has always been included on the Olympic schedule. The Sailing program of 1972 consisted of a total of six sailing classes (disciplines). For each class seven races were scheduled from 29 August 1972 to 8 September 1972 of the coast of Kiel-Schilksee in the Bay of Kiel. Kiel hosted the Olympic sailing competitions for the second time, having previously done so during the 1936 Summer Olympics. The sailing was done on the triangular type Olympic courses.

German submarine U-3520 was a Type XXI U-boat (one of the "Elektroboote") of Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine, built for service in World War II. She was ordered on 6 November 1943, and was laid down on 20 September 1944 at F Schichau GmbH, Danzig, as yard number 1665. She was launched on 23 November 1944, and commissioned under the command of Kapitänleutnant Sarto Ballert on 12 January 1945.

Bülk Lighthouse (German: Leuchtturm Bülk) is on the westernmost headland of the Kieler Förde on the Baltic Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is the oldest lighthouse on the Kieler Förde and serves as a guiding light to the entrance into the fjord. A red light sector warns of the Stollergrund shoal. It is a popular attraction for visitors.

In 1959, the town was incorporated into the city of Kiel, therefore today sometimes named as Kiel-Schilksee (German pronunciation: [kiːl ˈʃɪlkˌzeː] (listen)). The town is a popular vacation destination because of its beaches and houses several resorts.Sailing events were held off Schilksee during the 1936 Summer Olympics.During the 1972 Summer Olympics, held in Munich, Germany, the Olympic Yachting Center was built at Schilksee for the sailing events of the 1972 games.
