The following is a timeline of the history of the city of Nairobi, Kenya.

Nairobi City County is one of the 47 counties of Kenya. With a population of 4,397,073 in the 2019 census, it is the third smallest yet the most populous of the counties, also serving as the capital of Kenya. In 2013, the county entity was effected, replacing Nairobi City Council, the long-standing unit of administration since pre-independence. The city county consists of eleven gazetted sub-counties and eighty five electoral wards. On the national level, Nairobi also sends seventeen Members of Parliament across the constituencies and one County Woman Representative to the National Assembly; one senator to the Senate. The county government, which is allocated devolved functions as per the constitution, is headed by the county governor, who appoints his cabinet. The county's legislature is headed by the County Speaker, who presides over the County Assembly: single-member elected Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) represent their respective electoral wards. Additional MCAs are also nominated by political parties as a form of affirmative action. Nairobi City County shares the same boundaries as the then Nairobi Province; Kenya's eight provinces were sub-divided into forty seven Counties of Kenya as per the Constitution of Kenya, based on the forty seven districts that were established prior to 1992. On 25 August 2022 after the general elections in Kenya, Johnson Sakaja was sworn-in as the fourth Governor of Nairobi County.

The Nairobi Hebrew Congregation is a synagogue founded in 1912 by Jewish merchants residing in Nairobi, which was part of the British East Africa. The Nairobi Jewish community has existed since 1904, when a few families migrated to East Africa following the Uganda Scheme, the plan proposed by Joseph Chamberlain, which offered the Jews a refuge from the pogroms in the Russian Empire by the Mau Escarpment, and took its current name in 1907. It was the first synagogue in eastern Africa. The original building was inaugurated in 1912, and it was demolished in 1954 to make room for a larger building, which was designed by Imre Rozsa and inaugurated the next year. Approximately 20 native Kenyans who converted to Judaism are part of the community. The community is officially Orthodox and has around 600 members. The synagogue is affiliated to the World Jewish Congress.

The University of Nairobi (uonbi or UoN; Swahili: Chuo Kikuu cha Nairobi) is a collegiate research university based in Nairobi. It is the largest university in Kenya. Although its history as an educational institution dates back to 1956, it did not become an independent university until 1970. During that year, the University of East Africa was split into three independent universities: Makerere University in Uganda, the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, and the University of Nairobi in Kenya. During the 2011 academic year, the university had 61,912 students, of whom 49,488 were undergraduates and 12,424 postgraduates. The university launched several policy frameworks and introduced self-funded enrollment (also called 'module 2') to cope with the rising demand for higher education in Kenya.As of 2022, University of Nairobi reported that it had more than 84,000 enrolled students.

Koinange Street is a busy street in the city of Nairobi, Kenya. In colonial times it was named Sadler Street after an early governor, James Hayes Sadler. In 1964, it was renamed after Koinange Wa Mbiyu. It is a major red-light district despite prostitution in Kenya being illegal. Koinange Street is the street in Nairobi Central Business District with the highest number of banks along one street.

Jeevanjee Gardens is an open garden in the Central Business District of Nairobi, Kenya. Jeevanjee Gardens was founded by A.M. Jeevanjee, an Asian-born entrepreneur in Kenya. It is the only park in the city that is directly owned by the people, having been donated to the magnificent people of Nairobi as a resting area (the park was private property and it is held in trust for the people of Nairobi).

On 31 December 1980, New Year's Eve, a bomb exploded in The Norfolk Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya. It partially destroyed the hotel, killing 20 people and wounding another 87.The owner of the hotel was a prominent member of the local Jewish community, and it has been suggested that the attack was in retaliation for Kenya providing support to rescue the Israeli hostages in Uganda during Operation Entebbe four years earlier. Among the dead were at least four Kenyans, two Americans, two British children, a Danish employee of KLM, a Frenchman, and a Belgian child. The bomber was said by the Kenyan government to be a Moroccan with a Maltese passport named Qaddura Mohammed Abd Al-Hamid, identified as a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) who departed on a flight to Saudi Arabia on the day of the bombing.

The Fairmont Norfolk is a historic hotel in Nairobi, Kenya, and is managed by the luxury hotel chain Fairmont Hotels and Resorts. The hotel has 170 rooms and three restaurants, and consists of five main blocks, each ranging from 1 to 2 stories high. The hotel has a signature Tudor style of architecture that has been maintained since its original construction.

Nairobi ( ny-ROH-bee) is the capital and largest city of Kenya. The name is derived from the Maasai phrase Enkare Nairobi, which translates to "place of cool waters", a reference to the Nairobi River which flows through the city. The city proper had a population of 4,397,073 in the 2019 census, while the metropolitan area has a projected population in 2022 of 10.8 million. The city is commonly referred to as The Green City in the Sun.Nairobi was founded in 1899 by colonial authorities in British East Africa, as a rail depot on the Uganda - Kenya Railway. The town quickly grew to replace Mombasa as the capital of Kenya in 1907. After independence in 1963, Nairobi became the capital of the Republic of Kenya. During Kenya's colonial period, the city became a centre for the colony's coffee, tea and sisal industry. The city lies in the south central part of Kenya, at an elevation of 1,795 metres (5,889 ft). Nairobi is home of the Kenyan Parliament Buildings and hosts thousands of Kenyan businesses and over 1000 major international companies and organizations, including the United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) and the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON). Nairobi is an established hub for business and culture. The Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) is one of the largest in Africa and the second-oldest exchange on the continent. It is Africa's fourth-largest exchange in terms of trading volume, capable of making 10 million trades a day. It also contains the Nairobi National Park. Nairobi joined the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities in 2010.

All Saints' Cathedral, Nairobi is a Cathedral of the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK).

Housing Finance Group of Kenya (HFGK), also Housing Finance Group Limited (HFGL), is a financial services holding company based in Kenya. HFGK maintains its headquarters in Nairobi, the capital and largest city, with subsidiaries and branches in major urban centers in the country.
