Cathcart

Merrylee is a neighbourhood in the Scottish city of Glasgow. It is situated south of the River Clyde within the Newlands/Auldburn ward surrounded by other residential areas: Newlands, Cathcart and Muirend, and is a housing scheme consisting of mostly ex-local authority homes (terraced houses and three-and four-storey tenements) constructed in the 1950s and 60s.

Cathcart Trinity Church is one of two Church of Scotland Parish churchs in the Cathcart area of Glasgow.

The Couper Institute Library is a public library situated in Cathcart, Glasgow, Scotland. The Couper Institute was originally built by architects Campbell Douglas and James Sellars. The library was added in 1923 by architect John Alfred Taylor Houston on the bequest of Robert Couper. The institute and its library are now are now listed buildings, category B.

Battlefield is a district in the Scottish city of Glasgow. It is situated south of the River Clyde. The area takes its name from the Battle of Langside of 1568 in which Mary, Queen of Scots' army was defeated by forces acting in the name of her infant son, James VI. A highly decorative monument, designed by Alexander Skirving in 1887, now stands adjacent to Queen's Park commemorating the 320th anniversary of her defeat. Housing consists mainly of three and four-storey Victorian and Edwardian tenements, although there are also numerous townhouses from the same era, and some modern properties. Battlefield was formerly a centre of Glasgow's Jewish community, although most have now moved further south to Giffnock and Newton Mearns, or further afield to Manchester or Israel. The former synagogue had been converted to flats for social rent by Arklet Housing Association, now part of Hanover Scotland Housing Asscoaition. The area includes one of Glasgow's main hospitals, the New Victoria Hospital (and the buildings of the (old) Victoria Infirmary), and further education institutions, Langside College. Another key local landmark, the Battlefield Rest building and clocktower, is now a restaurant, as is The Church on the Hill, previously the Langside Hill Church.Langside Library, at the junction of Sinclair Drive and Battlefield Road, is the final Carnegie library in Glasgow. The Southside Festival takes place in Queens Park in May annually. It celebrates the cultural diversity and uniqueness of the Southside of the city.

Holmlea Primary School is a Category B listed former school in Glasgow. It was built in 1908 and closed in 2005. The building lay empty for several years after the school's closure but has now been renovated and converted into affordable housing.

Cathcart railway station is a railway station serving the Cathcart area of Glasgow, Scotland. It is located on the Cathcart Circle Line, 3.7 miles (6 km) south of Glasgow Central (via Queens Park). Services are provided by ScotRail on behalf of Strathclyde Partnership for Transport.

The Glasgow Victoria Infirmary was a teaching hospital situated at Langside/Battlefield in the south-east of Glasgow from 1880 until 2015. It was managed by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

Glasgow South is a burgh constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom (Westminster). It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election. The constituency was first used in the 2005 general election, and is the successor to Glasgow Cathcart.

Langside railway station is a railway station that serves the Langside and Newlands area of Glasgow, Scotland. It is located on the Cathcart Circle Line. Services are provided by ScotRail on behalf of Strathclyde Partnership for Transport.

Langside College was a further and higher education college located in the Mount Florida / Battlefield region of Glasgow. It was established in 1947 and enrols over 5,000 students every year of whom many are from countries outwith the European Union. The college operated in two main campuses and in over 80 community based venues spanning much of the South side of Glasgow, including at Rutherglen, Govanhill, Castlemilk and Toryglen.Phase 1 of a newly built main campus was opened in May 2009 while Phase 2, incorporating new sport, music and drama facilities, opened in August 2010. The final phase - an outdoor sports facility - was completed in February 2011. Prior to this, its Category B-listed original main building nearby (built as the Glasgow Deaf and Dumb Institution in 1868) was sold to be converted into apartments as 'Chroma House'.

Millbrae Crescent is a street located in Glasgow providing numerous examples of category A listed buildings thought to be designed by Alexander "Greek" Thomson, or posthumously by his architectural partner, Robert Turnbull. The street comprises an elegant row of two-storey terraced houses built using blonde sandstone and exemplifying Thomson's typical use of Egyptian-derived columns and ornamentation. Millbrae Crescent is located on the River Cart in Langside, Glasgow, and within close proximity of Thomson's noted residential Victorian villa, Holmwood House. The crescent, which is located near the White Cart Water river, has been a high risk area for flooding over the years.

The Battle of Langside was fought on 13 May 1568 between forces loyal to Mary, Queen of Scots, and forces acting in the name of her infant son James VI. Mary’s short period of personal rule ended in 1567 in recrimination, intrigue, and disaster when, after her capture at Carberry Hill, she was forced to abdicate in favour of James VI. Mary was imprisoned in Loch Leven Castle, while her Protestant half-brother, James Stewart, Earl of Moray, was appointed Regent on behalf of his nephew. In early May 1568 Mary escaped, heading west to the country of the Hamiltons, high among her remaining supporters, and the safety of Dumbarton Castle with the determination to restore her rights as queen. Mary was defeated and went into exile and captivity in England. The battle is generally considered the start of the Marian civil war.
