Gjesdal (village)

Gjesdal Church (Norwegian: Gjesdal kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Gjesdal Municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. It is located in the village of Gjesdal. It is one of the three churches for the Gjesdal parish which is part of the Jæren prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Stavanger. The white, wooden church was built in a long church style in 1848 using designs by the architect Hans Linstow. The church seats about 450 people.

The hydronym Lima, belonging to the lake, adjacent settlements, and associated surname, is, according to Oddvar Nes, likely derived from the Indo-European root "lei-", which means "wet, calm water".

Other villages in Gjesdal include Dirdal, Frafjord, Gilja, Gjesdal, and Oltedal. The municipality lies about 25 kilometres (16 mi) to the southwest of the city of Stavanger in southwestern Norway.The European route E39 highway runs through the western side of the municipality. On the east side of the municipality, the Frafjord Tunnel connects the Frafjord valley with the rest of the municipality. The 618-square-kilometre (239 sq mi) municipality is the 187th largest by area out of the 356 municipalities in Norway. Gjesdal is the 95th most populous municipality in Norway with a population of 12,302. The municipality's population density is 22 inhabitants per square kilometre (57/sq mi) and its population has increased by 11.4% over the previous 10-year period.

Oltedalsvatnet is a lake in the municipality of Gjesdal in Rogaland county, Norway. The 3.12-square-kilometre (1.20 sq mi) lake lies just south of the village of Oltedal. It is a reservoir along the river Oltedalsåna that is used to store water for the Oltedal Hydroelectric Power Station. The lake sits at an elevation of 101.5 to 112.5 metres (333 to 369 ft) and it holds about 28,800,000 cubic metres (23,300 acre⋅ft; 37,700,000 cu yd).

Edlandsvatnet is a lake in the municipality of Gjesdal in Rogaland county, Norway. The 2.11-square-kilometre (0.81 sq mi) lake lies just south of the large village of Ålgård, immediately southwest of the lake Limavatnet. The European route E39 highway runs along the northern shore of the lake. The lake empties into the river Figgjoelva on the northwestern end of the lake. The lake has many brown trout in it.

Flassavatnet is a lake in Rogaland county, Norway. The lake lies on the border of the municipalities of Gjesdal and Sandnes. The 0.9243-square-kilometre (0.3569 sq mi) lake sits about 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) north of the large village of Ålgård, not far north of the lakes Edlandsvatnet and Limavatnet. The lake is a reservoir with a small dam on the southern edge of the lake. The water level is kept at about 177 metres (581 ft) above sea level. The reservoir holds about 900,000 cubic metres (730 acre⋅ft; 1,200,000 cu yd).

The white, concrete church was built in a rectangular style in 2002 using designs by the architect Olav Urstad. The church was consecrated on 10 February 2002.

The village is located in a narrow river valley about 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) northeast of the municipal centre of Ålgård and about 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) west of the village of Dirdal, just west of the Høgsfjorden. The village has some small industries such as yarn making, chemicals, and sand/gravel pits.The 0.58-square-kilometre (140-acre) village has a population (2019) of 993 and a population density of 1,712 inhabitants per square kilometre (4,430/sq mi).

The village is located along the European route E39 highway, about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) southeast of the city of Sandnes in the Jæren district of the county. The village includes the neighborhoods of Ålgård, Bærland, Fiskebekk, Opstad and Solås. The large lake Edlandsvatnet lies on the south side of the village, emptying into the river Figgjoelva which runs northwest to Sandnes.Ålgård is mostly known for the Kongeparken amusement park, an old wool mill, and a local football team (Ålgård F.K.) playing in the Norwegian Second Division. The Old Ålgård Church (built in 1917) and the new Ålgård Church (built in 2015) are both located in the village. There is significant industries in Ålgård, primarily the wood, textile, and clothing industries.

The white, concrete church was built in a fan-shaped style in 2015 using designs by the architects René de Groot og Erik Thesen from the firm, Link Arkitektur. The church seats about 500 people.The church was built in 2015 to replace the Old Ålgård Church (located next door) which was then too small for the congregation. The church was consecrated on 15 March 2015 by the Bishop Erling Johan Pettersen. The 1,800 square metres (19,000 sq ft) church was built at a cost of 54.5 million kr.On the upper floor is the sanctuary, vestry, two larger meeting rooms, and a smaller room. There is room for 430 people in the sanctuary, but the large doors in the back can be opened up to the entry hall and adjoining rooms, giving the church a maximum capacity of 600. A 12.5-metre (41 ft) high altarpiece designed by Tor Lindrupsen stands at the front of the church. On the lower floor is the 180-square-metre (1,900 sq ft) kitchen, dining hall, church offices, seminar rooms, utility rooms, and closets.

It used to be the main church for the Ålgård parish which is part of the Jæren prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Stavanger. The white, wooden church was built in a long church design and an art nouveau style in 1917 using designs by the architect Ole Stein. The church seats about 250 people.
